OBJECTIVE: To test synovial fluid (SF) for the presence of soluble fragments originating from distinct tumor necrosis factor receptors (TNF-sR55 and TNF-sR75) which bind to TNF and inhibit its biologic activity.

Serum levels of soluble tumor necrosis factor alpha receptor I (sTNF-RI) were elevated in patients with lepromatous (LL) reactional-state type II leprosy, and sTNF-RII levels were increased in patients with full tuberculoid (TT) or LL type II leprosy. The sTNF-R in sera from patients with type II leprosy, but not other forms of leprosy, inhibited recombinant TNF cytolytic activities in vitro. This suggests that sTNF-R regulatory activities are partially impaired in patients with leprosy.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed cord blood for levels of interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-10 (IL-10), and p55 (sTNFR-I) and p75 (sTNFR-II) soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors.

The effect of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on macrophage receptors for tumor necrosis factor/cachectin (TNF-R) was studied. OBJECTIVE: Increased proinflammatory cytokine concentrations have been implicated in the pathogenesis of heatstroke. Soluble cytokine receptors can modulate circulating cytokine activities.
