Recidivistic cholesteatoma encompasses residual as well as recurrent disease, and can occur in up to 61% of cases. Pediatric disease may have a higher propensity for recidivism. Serial physical examination and MRI including non-EPI DWI sequences are useful in surveillance. Canal wall down approaches with mastoid obliteration may be an approach to reduce recidivism while minimizing the need for mastoid cavity maintenance. Modern techniques of Eustachian tube dilation and endoscopic ear surgery may yet prove particularly helpful in reducing re-retraction and residual disease in the retrotympanum

The current study focuses on adolescents with sex offense histories and examines sexual reoffending patterns within 2 years of a prior sex offense. We employed inductive statistical models using archival official records maintained by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (FDJJ), which provides social, offense, placement, and risk assessment history data for all youth referred for delinquent behavior. The predictive accuracy of the random forest models is tested using receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves, the area under the curve (AUC), and precision/recall plots. The strongest p

This study was aimed at finding risk factors that predict both overall recidivism and severity of recidivism in serious juvenile offenders. Seventy static and dynamic risk factors associated with family characteristics, peers, psychopathology, substance abuse, psychological factors, and behavior during treatment were assessed with the Juvenile Forensic Profile in a sample of 728 juvenile offenders. Official reconviction data were used to register recidivism with a minimum time at risk of 2 years. Severity of offending was categorized according to the maximum sentence for the offense committed

A 3-year chart survey and questionnaire was conducted of equestrian-injured patients at a regional trauma center to determine patterns and consequences of injury and rate of recidivism. Ninety-two patients (95 encounters) were treated; most were young (mean age, 27 +/- 11 years) women (84%) riders sustaining falls (80%). Most injuries were orthopedic (47%); 19 per cent of patients required hospital admission. There was one death. Helmet use was documented in only 34 per cent. Eighty-one per cent of patients responded to a follow-up telephone survey; 36 per cent recounted additional accidents (

Factors associated with recidivism in 86 men convicted of rape were studied. These men had been out of prison for up to 12 years (mean, 7.6 years). The majority of the men had been assessed in a sexual behaviors clinic of a general psychiatric hospital at the time of their conviction. Almost 50 percent of the group had committed some offense by the fifth year out of prison. The recidivism rates for sexual, violent, and any criminal recidivism were 16 percent, 26 percent, and 53 percent, respectively. The ability to predict sexual and violent recidivism in this population of rapists was rather

INTRODUCTION: No previous reports have been published on the rate, frequency and nature of long-term sexual recidivism for a large cohort of Danish sexual offenders who have been through a forensic psychiatric evaluation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective follow-up study of all male sexual offenders evaluated between 1st January 1978 and 31st December 1992 at the Department of Forensic Psychiatry, Aarhus University Hospital, or at the Clinic of Forensic Psychiatry, Ministry of Justice, Copenhagen (n = 441).
RESULTS: Of the followed cohort (n = 342) 30% were sentenced for a new sexual cri

OBJECTIVE: To examine the recidivism rates of the various types of adult sex offenders including incest offenders, extrafamilial child molesters, exhibitionists, and rapists.
METHOD: An examination of the literature over the past 4 decades and the data from our own study group.
RESULTS: Methodological shortfalls and differences across the studies make statistical appraisal of the results difficult. Nevertheless, there is a consensus that incest offenders are less likely to reoffend compared with extrafamilial child molesters. Rapists and exhibitionists are thought to be at a higher risk for

BACKGROUND: While recidivism has been well studied in psychotic disorders, little has specifically been done to determine what differences exist between patients admitted multiple times compared with once for major depressive disorder (MDD).
METHOD: The records of patients admitted with MDD to a large military medical center were reviewed during the years 1991-1995. Recidivists were 46 consecutive patients admitted three or more times during the period. The comparison sample was 50 consecutive patients admitted for the first time in 1993 without subsequent admission to our hospital. Patient g

We present conservative estimates for the marginal value of public funds (MVPF) associated with providing Medicaid to inmates exiting prison. The MVPF measures the ratio between a policy's social benefits and its governmental costs. Our MVPF estimates suggest that every additional $1 the government spends on providing inmates exiting prison with Medicaid coverage can result in social benefits ranging between $3.45 and $10.62. A large proportion of the benefits we consider stems from the reduced future criminal involvement among former inmates who receive Medicaid. Employing a difference-in-dif

In this study, we examined the association of hostility, as measured by the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI), with offence characteristics and recidivism in 656 adult male sexual offenders. Hostility was significantly associated with having prior violent charges, the use of violence in the index sexual offence, sexual recidivism, and violent recidivism. After controlling for risk level, as measured by a modified version of the Rapid Risk Assessment for Sexual Offence Recidivism (RRASOR-mod), the significant association between hostility and sexual and violent recidivism remained. Despite the rapidly growth of mental health attention focused on the phenomenon of stalking, no empirical research to date has attempted to assess the frequency of repeat offending or attempted to identify predictors of recidivism. A total of 148 stalking and harassment offenders who were court-ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation were followed for a period of 2.5-13 years in order to assess the frequency of repeat offenses and the variables that differentiated high versus low risk offenders. Recidivism data were obtained from a variety of sources, including criminal justice records,

A 22-year-old male with juvenile dermatomyositis presented with fever up to 40 degrees C and acute pain in his right thigh accompanied by muscle weakness, a skin rash and a tender swelling. Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and aldolase were mildly elevated. C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen were markedly increased. The differential white blood cell count revealed relative lymphopenia. Radiography showed diffuse calcifications particularly around the thighs and knees of both legs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated inflammatory infiltrates in the right thigh. The lesions

The goals of this study were to determine the frequency of trauma recidivism and to identify risk factors. The authors hypothesized that substance abuse and mental illness would be associated with recidivism. They performed a retrospective review of 879 patients who were treated surgically for high-energy fractures over a period of 4 years. Recidivism was defined as presentation to the trauma center for a new, unrelated injury. A recurrent recidivist was a repeat patient who returned for more than 1 additional injury. The study identified 164 (18.7%) patients who returned with a new injury. Me

We hypothesized that the integration of forensic psychiatrists and the forensic system into the general stream of mental health should lead to better reintegration of forensic patients into the society. The aims of the study were to explore the link between violence, murder, psychiatric disorders and other variables, and to suggest a mode of prevention of criminal recidivism. This investigation provided a more reflective profile of mentally ill persons convicted of murder, hospitalized in Psychiatric Hospital in Demir Hisar in Macedonia between 2007 and 2009. Study results indicated the offend

Our goal in this retrospective study was to assess empirical risk factors for repeat visits to the psychiatric emergency room. This information may be useful for targeted prevention and cost-effective service planning. Over a 7-month period, 400 (18%) of 2212 patients were repeat visitors, accounting for 36% of all visits. A diagnosis of a psychotic disorder at the first visit was a risk factor for a repeat visit, especially in young patients. Substance abuse, as suggested by positive urine toxicology, decreased the likelihood of recidivism, but positive toxicology screens in young schizophren

The purpose of this study was to explore dangerousness and fire setting recidivism of mentally disordered firesetters in comparison with mentally healthy arsonists. In Germany, all trials are registered centrally by the Federal Central Register. The records of this Register for the three year period from 1983 until 1985 were used in this follow-up study of arsonists to identify three samples of subjects: (1) All persons convicted of arson who have been found not guilty by reasons of insanity (n = 186), (2) all person convicted of arson who have been found guilty of diminished responsibility (n
