Single-institutional reference values for concentric needle jitter analysis using the extrapolated reference values procedure: Comparison to published reference values.

BACKGROUND: The extrapolated reference values procedure (E-Ref) was used to compare data from a single institution with the recently published reference value (RV) for concentric electrode jitter. METHODS: Data from voluntarily activated concentric needle jitter studies in the frontalis muscle were obtained using retrospective chart review. All measured signals were reviewed for acceptable quality. Cutoff values for increased jitter were calculated using E-Ref, and compared with the published RVs. RESULTS: At total of 1501 apparent single-fiber action potential (ASFAP) pairs were reviewed; 1

Insulin assays and reference values.

Insulin is produced by beta cells in pancreatic islets of Langherans via a complex process of proteolytic conversion. A precursor molecule, proinsulin, is transported to the Golgi apparatus where it is packed into secretory granules. Maturation of the secretory granules is associated with conversion of proinsulin to insulin and C-peptide by enzymatic cleavage. Secretion of insulin into the bloodstream is accompanied by the release of small amounts of proinsulins. Insulin immunoassays consist of radioimmunoassays using polyclonal antisera which cross-react with proinsulins, and two-site assays

Reference change values of FIB-4.

When comparing two analytical results for the same analyte, the clinicians may benefit from knowing the reference change values (RCVs) of the analyte. For Fibrosis-4 Index (FIB-4), a noninvasive test used for assessing the risk of liver fibrosis, no RCVs have been published for non-cirrhotic individuals. Therefore, we estimated RCVs for adults, using retrospectively collected data from outpatients with AST, ALT, and thrombocytes within the respective reference intervals. FIB-4 was calculated as (age × AST)/(thrombocytes × ALT0.5). From two FIB-4 values in each patient we calculated the RCVs pa

Lymphocytes subsets reference values in childhood.

Immunophenotyping of blood lymphocyte subsets and activation markers is a basic tool in the diagnostic process of primary immunodeficiency diseases, its use becoming more and more widespread as the knowledge about these illnesses increases. However, the availability of reliable reference values, which need to be age-matched for the pediatric population, is a pre-requisite for the reliable interpretation of immunophenotyping data. Aim of this study is to analyze the lymphocyte subsets and activation markers distribution in children aged 0-18 years referring to the University Hospital of Padova

Comparison of lung-function reference values.

OBJECTIVE: Lung-function reference values play an important role in medical surveillance examinations of occupational and environmental respiratory diseases, in stipulation of preventive measures, in initiation of therapeutic measures, and in granting of benefits to which individuals with lung injuries or occupational lung diseases are entitled (e.g., bronchial asthma, pneumoconiosis, or farmer's lung disease). Prediction equations most widely used are based on studies performed more than 20 years ago and may not represent the findings obtained in today's population. METHODS: We recorded case

Systematic Review on HRV Reference Values.

Heart rate variability (HRV) has been established as a measure for the variation in time intervals between successive cardiac actions as a marker of the autonomic nervous system. However, despite many efforts in this field, there are no reference values that are generally accepted. The objective of this systematic review is, therefore, to present an overview of the studies on HRV normal values published to date, with due consideration of any influencing factors. A systematic database query was carried out in PubMed, Scopus, Ovid Medline, and PsychInfo using the search string "((hrv) or (heart

[Reference values, metabolism and findings of abnormal values of magnesium in childhood].

In the introduction we summarize specifics of reference values and metabolism of magnesium in childhood. We studied the frequency of abnormal values of magnesium in both children and adults hospitalized in Faculty Hospital Motol, Prague. We analyzed 6761 tests of S-Mg and 356 dU-Mg results located in archives of Department of clinical biochemistry (1. 1. 1992-1. 11. 1995). The frequency of low level of S-Mg (< 0.65 mmol/l) was 14%. Hypermagnesemia was present in 1.6% of the total number of cases. We found low values of dU-Mg in 20% of the total number of cases, hypermagnesiuria was present in

Reference Depolarization Values for Polar-Organic Aggregates.

A key aspect in the design of mixed polar-organic layers and metallic or semiconducting devices is the dielectric constant of the organic aggregate, which modulates the surface work function and band alignments. In simple electrostatic models, a monolayer is treated as an array of point dipoles whose depolarization depends only on an effective molecular polarizability. However, the absence of a unified framework in quantum-chemical computational studies leaves the reliability of the point dipole model uncertain. In this work, we demonstrate the breakdown of the point dipole approximation for h

Reference values for thrombotic markers in children.

Thromboembolic events are an increasingly common problem encountered in children. The laboratory diagnosis of thrombotic disorders in children differs from that in adults. To establish the normal reference of natural anticoagulant parameters in children of different age groups, plasma from healthy children between the ages of 2 months and 16 years (n = 127) and adults (n = 30) were assayed for a disintegrin-like and metalloprotease with thrombospondin type 1 domain 13 (ADAMTS-13), von Willebrand factor collagen-binding activity (vWF:CB), tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI), homocyteine and

Reference Values for Abdominal Circumference in Premature Infants.

Objectives: Abdominal distention is a common indicator of feeding intolerance in premature newborns. In the absence of a precise definition, abdominal distention and its degree are highly subjective. The aim of this study was to construct references and smoothed percentiles for abdominal circumference (AC) and AC to head circumference (HC) ratio (AC/HC) in infants born between 24 weeks and 34 weeks of gestational age. Methods: ACs and HCs were collected weekly in eutrophic premature infants without congenital abdominal or cerebral malformation. AC and HC charts were modeled using the LMS metho

Paediatric reference values for total psoas muscle area.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia, the unintentional loss of skeletal muscle mass, is associated with poor outcomes in adult patient populations. In adults, sarcopenia is often ascertained by cross-sectional imaging of the psoas muscle area (PMA). Although children with chronic medical illnesses may be at increased risk for muscle loss because of nutritional deficiencies, physical deconditioning, endocrine anomalies, and systemic inflammation, consistent quantitative definitions for sarcopenia in children are lacking. We aimed to generate paediatric reference values for PMA at two intervertebral lumbar l
