Stretch reflex blepharospasm.

We studied a patient with blepharospasm provoked by stretching the orbicularis oculi muscles. With the eyes closed, EMG of the orbicularis oculi at rest revealed spontaneous rhythmic muscle activity that was not visible. When she tried to open her eyes, repetitive jerking blepharoclonus and tonic blepharospasm rendered her functionally blind. Passive stretching of the orbicularis oculi evoked a burst of EMG activity with two components. Touch or pinprick did not elicit such reflex activity. Anesthesia of the supraorbital nerves abolished muscle responses to stretch and improved the blepharospa

Stretch reflex oscillations and essential tremor.

Using a computer-controlled torque motor and manipulandum, 50 ms torque pulses and 70 second trains of binary pseudorandom torque disturbances were applied to the wrists of 10 adult controls and 22 patients with essential tremor in order to study the interaction between mechanically-induced stretch-reflex oscillations and essential tremor. These two oscillations were separated by applying inertial and spring loads to the wrist. There was no evidence of increased or unstable stretch-reflex activity in the essential tremor patients, and stretch-reflex latencies did not correlate with the frequen

Are proprioceptive-induced reflex seizures epileptically-enhanced stretch reflex manifestations?

In reflex seizures induced by proprioceptive stimuli, the activated network may be identified as a single anatomo-functional circuit; the sensory-motor network. These seizures may be considered as epileptically-enhanced stretch reflexes. Proprioceptive reflex epilepsies are a good example of the so-called "system epilepsies". We present three cases discussing the clinical features of such epilepsies. [Published with videosequences].

Detrusor reflex contraction inhibited by anal stretch.

Anal stretch has been advocated as a method to overcome detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia. In evaluating candidates for this technique, it has been observed that in some cases the detrusor reflex and the external sphincter contraction is inhibited. The detrusor-sphincter unit then assumes a lower motor neuron pattern. This explains the need of the Valsalva and Credé maneuver that had been incorporated in the anal stretch technique to allow dyssynergic patients to void.

Modulations of stretch reflex by altering visuomotor contexts.

Various functional modulations of the stretch reflex help to stabilize actions, but the computational mechanism behind its context-dependent tuning remains unclear. While many studies have demonstrated that motor contexts associated with the task goal cause functional modulation of the stretch reflex of upper limbs, it is not well understood how visual contexts independent of the task requirements affect the stretch reflex. To explore this issue, we conducted two experiments testing 20 healthy human participants (age range 20-45, average 31.3 ± 9.0), in which visual contexts were manipulated i

The muscle stretch reflex throughout the menstrual cycle.

INTRODUCTION: The significant sex disparity in sports-related knee injuries may be due to underlying differences in motor control. Although the development of sex-specific movement patterns is likely multifactorial, this study specifically focuses on the potential modulatory role of sex hormones. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the muscle stretch reflex (MSR) across the menstrual cycle. We hypothesized that the MSR would fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle and that the lowest response would correspond with peak concentrations of estrogen. METHODS: Nineteen healthy women age 18-

[Dynamic properties of the reflex to muscle stretching].

The stretch and unloading reflexes were studied on extensor muscles of the hindlimb of decerebrated cats. It had been shown that nonlinear properties of the muscle dynamics were transformed under the reflex control and hysteresis inherent in the muscle itself was not removed by the stretch reflex. Hysteresis of the stretch reflex led to uncertainty of the equilibrium value of the muscle length and the equilibrium length depended on the movement prehistory. Stiffness of the muscle lengthening was shown to depend on the point of change in the movement direction. The observed nonlinearity of the

Upper limb stretch reflex dynamics in male judo athletes.

In this study, we aimed to assess the upper limb stretch reflex characteristics in judo athletes. Overall, 15 experienced judo athletes (mean experience: 13.4 ± 3.1 years) and 15 controls were evaluated using two perturbation types, abrupt passive elbow extension (flexor stretching) and flexion (extensor stretching) induced by a dynamometer. During extension perturbations, participants relaxed or flexed their elbows upon detection, while during flexion perturbations, they relaxed or extended their elbows. Stretch reflexes were recorded via right biceps and triceps brachii surface electromyogra

Starting position and stretching velocity effects on the reflex threshold angle of stretch reflex in the soleus muscle of normal and spastic subjects.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although both starting position and stretching velocity play an important role in reflex response, their interaction with stretch reflexes has not been thoroughly investigated. This study examined the interaction effect of starting position and stretching velocity on the reflex threshold angle (RTA) of the stretch reflex in the soleus muscle of normal and spastic subjects. METHODS: The spastic group included 11 ankles from 7 subjects with a history of upper motor neuron lesions. Their ages ranged from 22 to 40 years. Another 10 healthy subjects served as the control gr

Stretch reflex and Hoffmann reflex responses to osteopathic manipulative treatment in subjects with Achilles tendinitis.

CONTEXT: Irvin M. Korr, PhD, hypothesized that sensitivity of the monosynaptic stretch reflex (ie, deep tendon reflex) plays a major role in the restriction-of-motion characteristic of somatic dysfunction, and that restoration of range of motion through osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) could be achieved by resetting of the stretch receptor gain. OBJECTIVE: To test Korr's hypothesis in the context of Achilles tendinitis, examining whether OMT applied to patients with Achilles tendinitis reduces the strength of the stretch reflex. METHODS: Subjects were recruited through public adverti

The stretch reflex and the contributions of C David Marsden.

The stretch reflex or myotatic reflex refers to the contraction of a muscle in response to its passive stretching by increasing its contractility as long as the stretch is within physiological limits. For ages, it was thought that the stretch reflex was of short latency and it was synonymous with the tendon reflex, subserving the same spinal reflex arc. However, disparities in the status of the two reflexes in certain clinical situations led Marsden and his collaborators to carry out a series of experiments that helped to establish that the two reflexes had different pathways. That the two ref

Assistive Loading Promotes Goal-Directed Tuning of Stretch Reflex Gains.

Voluntary movements are prepared before they are executed. Preparatory activity has been observed across the CNS and recently documented in first-order neurons of the human PNS (i.e., in muscle spindles). Changes seen in sensory organs suggest that independent modulation of stretch reflex gains may represent an important component of movement preparation. The aim of the current study was to further investigate the preparatory modulation of short-latency stretch reflex responses (SLRs) and long-latency stretch reflex responses (LLRs) of the dominant upper limb of human subjects. Specifically, w

Immobilization leads to reduced stretch reflexes but increased central reflex gain in the rat.

Plastic adaptations are known to take place in muscles, tendons, joints, and the nervous system in response to changes in muscle activity. However, few studies have addressed how these plastic adaptations are related. Thus this study focuses on changes in the mechanical properties of the ankle plantarflexor muscle-tendon unit, stretch reflex activity, and spinal neuronal pathways in relation to cast immobilization. The left rat hindlimb from toes to hip was immobilized with a plaster cast for 1, 2, 4, or 8 wk followed by acute electrophysiological recordings to investigate muscle stiffness and

Corticospinal excitability and reflex modulation in a contralateral non-stretched muscle following unilateral stretching.

PURPOSE: Muscle stretching effect on the range of motion (ROM) and force deficit in non-stretched muscle, and the underlying mechanisms, is an ongoing issue. This study aimed to investigate crossover stretching effects and mechanisms on the plantar flexor muscles. METHODS: Fourteen recreationally active females (n = 5) and males (n = 9) performed six sets of 45-s static stretching (SS) (15-s recovery) to the point of discomfort of the dominant leg (DL) plantar flexors or control (345-s rest). Participants were tested for a single 5-s pre- and post-test maximal voluntary isometric contraction

Compensatory behaviours after oral cancer: stretch reflex improves simulated tongue protrusion.

The study investigates if a simple stretch reflex mechanism can restore function in a biomechanical tongue model altered by fibrosis, a side effect of radiation therapy for head and neck cancers. Lateral deviation during tongue protrusion was reduced by 57.7% in a high fibrosis case and by 25.97% in a low fibrosis case. Muscle length analysis indicated recovery was driven by the lesion side genioglossus anterior and medial. The results suggest that adaptation may include stretch reflex and other mechanisms to restore function. The study's method establishes a foundation for future systematic i

Biomechanical parameters of the elbow stretch reflex in chronic hemiparetic stroke.

We sought to determine the relative velocity sensitivity of stretch reflex threshold angle and reflex stiffness during stretches of the paretic elbow joint in individuals with chronic hemiparetic stroke, and to provide guidelines to streamline spasticity assessments. We applied ramp-and-hold elbow extension perturbations ranging from 15 to 150°/s over the full range of motion in 13 individuals with hemiparesis. After accounting for the effects of passive mechanical resistance, we modeled velocity-dependent reflex threshold angle and torque-angle slope to determine their correlation with overal

Contributions of altered stretch reflex coordination to arm impairments following stroke.

Patterns of stereotyped muscle coactivation, clinically referred to as synergies, emerge following stroke and impair arm function. Although researchers have focused on cortical contributions, there is growing evidence that altered stretch reflex pathways may also contribute to impairment. However, most previous reflex studies have focused on passive, single-joint movements without regard to their coordination during volitional actions. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of stroke on coordinated activity of stretch reflexes elicited in multiple arm muscles following multijoint
