During joint inflammation, various reactive oxygen species (ROS) are present in the surrounding tissue and joint fluid. In the laboratory, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is typically used to simulate inflammatory conditions, and media containing proteins and hyaluronic acid (HA) are employed to simulate joint synovial fluid. Electrochemical interactions between H2O2 and HA in the presence of a CoCrMo surface are expected, since HA molecules contain redox-active moieties. We hypothesized that any redox reactions of these moieties with ROS will mitigate the oxidizing effect of H2O2 on the CoCrMo surfa

The plasticity of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) was investigated by examining three different processes, namely vestibular habituation to repeated head angular velocity steps, vestibular compensation after hemilabyrinthectomy, and vestibular compensation in patients suffering from unilateral Ménière's disease. The first two processes were examined in the cat, while the third process was studied in man. A quantification of these processes was obtained by computing some parameters characterizing the diagrams of the slow cumulative eye position (SCEP) and the slow phase eye velocity (SPEV) or

A technique is described for the measurement of retinal image motion under conditions of forced angular vibration of the head in pitch at frequencies between 10 and 100 Hz. The experimental technique has been used in nine normal subjects, and in two subjects with vestibular dysfunction; one with unilateral, the other with bilateral deficit. Eye movements compensatory in phase were recorded at frequencies between 10 and 25 Hz in all normal subjects. The ratio of angular retinal image motion to angular head motion (ocular gain) over these frequencies was in the range 0.82-0.94. When the head was

VOR parameters were compared in subjects at the extremes of the seasickness susceptibility scale. Thirty-nine subjects highly susceptible to seasickness and 30 nonsusceptible subjects participated in the study. The VOR was evaluated by the Sinusoidal Harmonic Acceleration (SHA) test at frequencies of 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08, and 0.16 Hz. In subjects susceptible to seasickness, VOR gain was significantly higher at 0.02 and 0.04 Hz, and phase lead was significantly lower at 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.08 Hz, than in nonsusceptible subjects. Our findings are in agreement with the notion that the vesti

In order to evaluate to what extent different diseases causing vertigo can be detected by studying vestibulo-spinal and vestibulo-ocular reflexes, 146 patients were examined. The diagnosis classes were: periodical attacks, position induced attacks, vestibular neuronitis, brain concussion, cerebrovascular disorders and acoustic neurinoma. Dynamic posturography was performed on all the patients, standard bithermal caloric test on 129 and voluntary saccades on 127 patients. The proportion of pathological test results in posturography exceeded that in the caloric test in all but one diagnosis clas

We measured the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during head impulses in a patient with right-sided internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Head impulses are rapid, passive, high-acceleration, low-amplitude head rotations in the direction of a particular semicircular canal (SCC). Adduction of the right eye was abnormally slow during right lateral SCC head impulses. The VOR during left posterior SCC impulses was severely deficient in both eyes, but the VOR during left anterior SCC impulses was only slightly deficient. We suggest that the vertical vestibulo-ocular pathways in humans are connected in SCC-plan

Vestibular migraine is a disease from the border of neurology and otoneurology. The diagnosis depends on patient history. There are no valuable laboratory or imaging tests, therefore the examination of visual-ocular and vestibulo-ocular reflexes is very useful in this group of patients. The material was collected from patients diagnosed due to dizziness at the Department of Otolaryngology and Oncology with the Subdepartment of Audiology and Phoniatrics, CM UMK in Bydgoszcz in 2019-2021. We considered patients with vestibular migraine and analyzed videonystagmographic tests in this study. The m

During vestibular nystagmus, optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), and optokinetic afternystagmus (OKAN), the axis of eye rotation tends to align with the vector sum of linear accelerations acting on the head. This includes gravitational acceleration and the linear accelerations generated by translation and centrifugation. We define the summed vector of gravitational and linear accelerations as gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA) and designate the phenomenon of alignment as spatial orientation of the angular vestibuloocular reflex (aVOR). On the basis of studies in the monkey, we postulated that the sp

The horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex was studied in normal and unilaterally vestibulopathic human subjects; the latter before and after surgical vestibular ablation. Subjects were oscillated at 0.025-4 Hz, 50 o/s peak head velocity, and for 0.025 and 0.25 Hz, at 50-300 o/s peak head velocity. Gain (peak eye/head velocities), phase (delay in degrees between peak eye and head velocities), and asymmetry (including d.c. bias; the average eye velocity over the cycle) were assessed for each rotation. In patients preoperatively, gain was subnormal while phase lead was greater than normal only at lo

Changes in the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during space flight have been suspected of contributing to space motion sickness. The horizontal VOR was studied in nine subjects on two space shuttle missions. Active unpaced head oscillation at 0.3 Hz was used as the stimulus to examine the gain and phase of the VOR with and without visual input, as well as the visual suppression of the reflex. No statistically significant changes were noted inflight in the gains or phase shifts of the VOR during any test condition, or between space motion sickness susceptible and nonsusceptible populations. The relationship between the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and gaze fixation was investigated in normal adults, normal children, patients with cerebellar lesion and patients with labyrinthine dysfunction. Large VOR gains were found in patients with cerebellar lesion and normal children, both presenting poor suppression by gaze. Pathological decline in the VOR gain with labyrinthine lesion impaired spatial gaze fixation; however, it did not affect fixation-induced suppression. Gaze effect on the VOR, whether amplifying or suppressing, decreased linearly and rapidly at higher frequencies so that

OBJECTIVES: The extent and clinical relevance of direct auditory influences on the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) remain uncertain. This study aims to characterize auditory effects on VOR gain using a video head impulse test (vHIT) protocol under controlled auditory stimulation.
DESIGN: Forty healthy adults completed standard vHIT in silence, then repeated it while 5 stimuli, 500 and 1000 Hz tone bursts, a 100 μsec click, continuous white noise, and a synthetic/da/ speech token, were presented monaurally through insert earphones at 60 dB SL (referenced to stimulus-frequency threshold for tone

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The vestibular-ocular reflex stabilises the retinal image and maintains balance during head movement. Astigmatism is one of the common refractive errors that can reduce the quality of visual inputs.
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of induced astigmatism on the function of the vestibular-ocular reflex.
METHODS: This prospective semi-experimental study was conducted on 48 participants aged 20 to 40 years who had no history of neurological, vestibular, or eye disorders. Simple myopic astigmatism was induced using three positive cylindrical

The authors highlights the importance of the vestibulo-ocular reflex examination through the head impulse test as a diagnostic method for vestibular dysfunction as well as, and primarily, a bedside semiotic resource capable of differentiating between acute peripheral vestibulopathy and a cerebellar or brainstem infarction in emergency rooms.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is a mechanism for the production of rapid compensatory eye movements during head movements. To investigate the adaptation of this reflex to spectacle magnifiers, the effect on the VOR of a brief period of wearing telescopic spectacles during head rotation was studied in normal subjects. VOR gain, as measured in darkness, was defined to be the ratio of compensatory slow phase eye velocity to head velocity. Initial VOR gain as measured for vertical axis sinusoidal head rotation at 0.1 Hz, amplitude 60 degrees/sec, was about 0.7. After 15 min adaptation by sinus
