Injectable anesthetic drugs used in rodents are often mixed and further diluted to increase the convenience and accuracy of dosing. We evaluated clinical refractometry as a simple and rapid method of quality control and mixing error detection of rodent anesthetic or analgesic mixtures. Dilutions of ketamine, xylazine, acepromazine, and buprenorphine were prepared with reagent-grade water to produce at least 4 concentration levels. Quantitative estimation of proteinuria done by the refractometric method was compared with that done by the sulphosalycilic acid method and biuret method in 102 urine samples. The analysis of results by students' t test showed no statistically significant difference between the three methods. It is concluded that quantitative estimation of urinary protein excretion by refractometric method is a simple cheap and reliable method and can be performed easily in the outpatient clinic. The instrument is quite handy and can be carried in the pocket.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of refraction of non-cooperative patients is a real challenge for the ophthalmologist. Retinoscopy produces exact results in experienced hands, but requires practice and time. The Videorefractor VRB 200 (manufactured by Tomey, Erlangen) was especially designed for refracting children. The aim of this study is to prove the accuracy of this tool in measuring refraction.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 259 patients (age 10 month to 77 years) were measured with the VRB 200. Each patient was examined by retinoscopy in cycloplegia and refracted with the Topcon autorefraktor RM-A 6000.

Using Rodenstock's Refraktometer refractometry was done on 314 hyperopic children (3--14 years) first after treating with Atropine and some weeks later after Cyclopentolat-hydrochlorid. 53,1% of them showed higher hyperopia after Atropine than after Cyclopentolat, the maximum in difference was 1,75 dptr. The specific gravity of 80 randomly chosen urine samples from healthy dogs without polyuria/polydipsia and from a few dogs with polyuria/polydipsia was measured by refractometry and by test strip method (sg test strip).
