Genomic Diversity of Aurochs From a Mediterranean Ice-Age Refugium.

The aurochs, the wild ancestor of domestic cattle, was a keystone herbivore in Late Pleistocene Eurasian ecosystems and a major prey species for Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers. Despite its significance, the genetic structure of aurochs populations that survived the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) remains poorly understood, especially in southeastern Europe. Here, we present the first directly dated ancient genomes of aurochs from the eastern Adriatic region, recovered from the Upper Palaeolithic site of Šandalja (Istria, Croatia). Two female individuals, dated to approximately 14,800-14,200 and 11,8

Coral Gardens Reef, Belize: An Acropora spp. refugium under threat in a warming world.

Live coral cover has declined precipitously on Caribbean reefs in recent decades. Acropora cervicornis coral has been particularly decimated, and few Western Atlantic Acropora spp. refugia remain. Coral Gardens, Belize, was identified in 2020 as a long-term refugium for this species. This study assesses changes in live A. cervicornis coral abundance over time at Coral Gardens to monitor the stability of A. cervicornis corals, and to explore potential threats to this important refugium. Live coral cover was documented annually from 2012-2019 along five permanent transects. In situ sea-surface t

The last ceratosaur of Asia: a new noasaurid from the Early Cretaceous Great Siberian Refugium.

The noasaurid ceratosaur Kiyacursor longipes gen. et sp. nov. is described based on a fragmentary skeleton including cervical vertebra, pectoral girdle, humerus and hind limbs from the Lower Cretaceous (Aptian) Ilek Formation at Shestakovo 1 locality in Western Siberia, Russia. This is the first ceratosaur from the Early Cretaceous of Asia, extending the stratigraphic range of Ceratosauria by 40 Myr on that continent. Kiyacursor shares unique hind limb proportions with Elaphrosaurus and Limusaurus, suggesting improved cursorial ability. These taxa show an ostrich-like specialization of the pes

Anatomical biliary reconstruction as an ultimum refugium for selective cases-History and current state of knowledge.

Reconstruction of extrahepatic bile ducts is a staple procedure of HPB surgery. The current standard for most cases is a nonanatomical bilioenteric reconstruction, a satisfactory option for the majority of patients. However, it cannot be used for a small number of selective cases (short bowel syndrome, severe abdominal adhesions), where an anatomical reconstruction with or without an interponate can be used. This review summarizes current knowledge about tissue and material usage for experimental and clinical anatomical bile duct reconstruction in the last 100 years. A Pubmed database was sear

The description of a critically endangered new species of seasonal killifish, Nothobranchius sylvaticus (Cyprinodontiformes: Nothobranchiidae), a relict species from an East African forest refugium in south-eastern Kenya.

A new species, Nothobranchius sylvaticus sp. nov. is described from ephemeral swamps in open areas of the Gongoni Forest in the seasonal Mkurumudzi system in south-eastern coastal Kenya. The species occupies a unique ecological niche as it inhabits small seasonal wetland habitats situated in a relict forest ecosystem. Nothobranchius sylvaticus sp. nov. is distinguished from all other members of the genus by: iridescent light blue scales on its trunk extending to cover the entire caudal peduncle; dorsal portion of head grey with distinct red lobes along the supraorbital canal; posterior scale m

Northward shifts and emerging refugia: Future habitat dynamics of Zygophyllum xanthoxylum.

Dryland restoration is increasingly constrained by climate change-driven shifts in the ecological niches of foundation shrubs, yet forecasts often underrepresent geomorphic heterogeneity and model complexity. We assessed future habitat dynamics for Zygophyllum xanthoxylum (Bunge) Maxim., a xerophytic shrub central to desert-steppe restoration in northwestern China, by integrating 114 spatially thinned occurrence records with climate, soil, topographic and geomorphological predictors in an ENMeval-optimized MaxEnt framework. Projections for 2041-2100 under SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5 were e

Phylogeography and population structure of thornback rays (Raja clavata L., Rajidae).

The phylogeography of thornback rays (Raja clavata) was assessed from European waters, using five nuclear microsatellite loci and mitochondrial cytochome b sequences. Strong regional differentiation was found between the Mediterranean basin, the Azores and the European continental shelf. Allelic and haplotype diversities were high in Portuguese populations, consistent with the existence of a refugium along the Iberian Peninsula. Unexpectedly, high diversity was also found in the English Channel/North Sea area. The lowest genetic diversity was found in the Black Sea. Populations sampled from th

Slow and steady wins the race: contrasted phylogeographic signatures in two Alpine amphibians.

A deeper phylogeographic structure is expected for slow-dispersing habitat specialists compared to widespread adaptable species, especially in topographically complex regions. We tested this classic assumption by comparing the genomic (RAD-sequencing) phylogeographies of 2 amphibians inhabiting the Swiss Alps: the mobile, cosmopolitan common frog (Rana temporaria) against the stationary, mountain endemic Alpine salamander (Salamandra atra). Our results ran opposite of predictions: the frog displayed significantly higher genetic divergences and lower within-population variation compared to the

Refugia and anthelmintic resistance: Concepts and challenges.

Anthelmintic resistance is a threat to global food security. In order to alleviate the selection pressure for resistance and maintain drug efficacy, management strategies increasingly aim to preserve a proportion of the parasite population in 'refugia', unexposed to treatment. While persuasive in its logic, and widely advocated as best practice, evidence for the ability of refugia-based approaches to slow the development of drug resistance in parasitic helminths is currently limited. Moreover, the conditions needed for refugia to work, or how transferable those are between parasite-host system

Badger setts provide thermal refugia, buffering changeable surface weather conditions.

Den use can be crucial in buffering environmental conditions and especially to provide an insulated environment for raising altricial young. Through Sept-Dec 2016 we monitored temperature and humidity at 11 badger setts (burrow systems), using thermal probes inserted over 4-13 sett entrances to a depth of ca. 2 m, supplemented by continuous daily logging at one entrance per sett. Setts were cooler than exterior conditions Sept-Oct, and warmer than exterior conditions Nov-Dec. Setts cooled down when badgers left them to forage by night, and warmed up when badgers occupied them by day. Soil type

Prebiotic chemical refugia: multifaceted scenario for the formation of biomolecules in primitive Earth.

The origin of life was a cosmic event happened on primitive Earth. A critical problem to better understand the origins of life in Earth is the search for chemical scenarios on which the basic building blocks of biological molecules could be produced. Classic works in pre-biotic chemistry frequently considered early Earth as an homogeneous atmosphere constituted by chemical elements such as methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), water (H2O), hydrogen (H2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Under that scenario, Stanley Miller was capable to produce amino acids and solved the question about the abiotic origin of

Dermacentor reticulatus - a tick on its way from glacial refugia to a panmictic Eurasian population.

The ornate dog tick (Dermacentor reticulatus) shows a recently expanding geographic distribution. Knowledge on its intraspecific variability, population structure, rate of genetic diversity and divergence, including its evolution and geographic distribution, is crucial to understand its dispersal capacity. All such information would help to evaluate the potential risk of future spread of associated pathogens of medical and veterinary concern. A set of 865 D. reticulatus ticks was collected from 65 localities across 21 countries, from Portugal in the west to Kazakhstan and southern Russia in th

Tillandsia landbeckii phyllosphere and laimosphere as refugia for bacterial life in a hyperarid desert environment.

BACKGROUND: The lack of water is a major constraint for microbial life in hyperarid deserts. Consequently, the abundance and diversity of microorganisms in common habitats such as soil are strongly reduced, and colonization occurs primarily by specifically adapted microorganisms that thrive in particular refugia to escape the harsh conditions that prevail in these deserts. We suggest that plants provide another refugium for microbial life in hyperarid deserts. We studied the bacterial colonization of Tillandsia landbeckii (Bromeliaceae) plants, which occur in the hyperarid regions of the Ataca

[Treatment of bruxism with botulinum toxin: think twice!].

A recent publication in the Nederlands Tijdschrift Voor Tandheelkunde (Dutch Journal of Dentistry) suggests botulinum toxin as a primary treatment for bruxism, especially for severe complaints of teeth grinding or jaw clenching. However, in the opinion of Lobbezoo et al., some outdated views on bruxism are used, and botulinum toxin is incorrectly classified as safe, according to them. In this Vision article, the authors describe the current insights into bruxism; they indicate how the presence of bruxism can be assessed in the clinic; when and how bruxism is treated; and finally, what the role

Polyploid frequency decreases with elevation but increases with distance to glacial refugia in the Eastern European Alps.

Polyploidy, the possession of more than two sets of chromosomes in somatic cells, is a major driver in the diversification of flowering plants. Whereas an association between the occurrence of polyploids and latitude suggests a major impact of temperature on their global distribution, it remains unknown how polyploid frequency varies at regional spatial scales, leaving unclear the overall robustness of such relationship and its major determinants. Here, we present a flora-wide dataset of newly sampled, georeferenced ploidy occurrence data for ca. 42,000 samples of angiosperms collected along 1

The first finding of Asian black bear (Carnivora, Ursidae, Ursus (Euarctos) thibetanus G. Cuvier, 1823) in the Late Pleistocene of northern Eurasia.

An M1 tooth of Asian black bear (Ursus (Euarctos) thibetanus G. Cuvier, 1823) was found in deposits of the Tetyukhinskaya cave (Middle Sikhote-Alin, 44°35'N, 135°36'E). This finding is the first reliable evidence of Asian black bear's presence in Pleistocene of Primorye. Its morphological and morphometric descriptions are given. The period of inhabitation of U. (E.) thibetanus determined based on the radiocarbon date obtained during the study of the tooth, is 39 874 ± 133 BP (NSK-850, UGAMS-21786), which corresponds to the middle of Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) of Late Pleistocene. Paleogenomics and habitat modeling reveal temperate Eurasian origins of woolly rhinoceroses.

The woolly rhinoceros was a prominent Ice Age megafaunal species, and there is limited knowledge regarding its origin and responses to past glacial cycles. We sequenced 29 mitochondrial and 14 nuclear genomes from Pleistocene specimens across Eurasia and modeled the species' habitats over the past 500,000 years. Our results suggest that its maternal genetic diversity mainly evolved in temperate Eurasia around 460 thousand to 420 thousand years ago during a prolonged glacial-interglacial transition. We found that a ~170-thousand-year-old East Asian individual was ancestral to all later populati

Using Agent-Based Modelling to Predict the Role of Wild Refugia in the Evolution of Resistance of Sea Lice to Chemotherapeutants.

A major challenge for Atlantic salmon farming in the northern hemisphere is infestation by the sea louse parasite Lepeophtheirus salmonis. The most frequent method of controlling these sea louse infestations is through the use of chemical treatments. However, most major salmon farming areas have observed resistance to common chemotherapeutants. In terrestrial environments, many strategies employed to manage the evolution of resistance involve the use of refugia, where a portion of the population is left untreated to maintain susceptibility. While refugia have not been deliberately used in Atla

The legacy of the paleotropical flora belt: extreme continental vicariance and island refugia in Woodwardioid ferns.

The distribution of vegetation across the Northern Hemisphere has been profoundly shaped by the climatic and geological history of the Cenozoic. An ancient paleotropical vegetation belt, once spanning the Northern Hemisphere, is hypothesized to have facilitated biotic exchange across regions during the early Cenozoic, before its eventual fragmentation and near-complete disappearance. We investigate the evolutionary history of this pattern using the fern subfamily Woodwardioideae (Blechnaceae)-a striking example of disjunction across the Northern Hemisphere. By integrating phylogenetic relation
