Reinforcement Schedule Effects on Long-Term Behavior Change.

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to determine whether different schedules of contingency management (CM), in conjunction with psychosocial treatment, produced different rates of abstinence and treatment attendance among individuals dependent on methamphetamine. METHODS: Individuals were randomized into 1 of 3 conditions that sought to equate total potential reinforcer magnitude while varying the frequency with which reinforcement was delivered, and comparing these results to those obtained when psychosocial support alone was used. RESULTS: Results indicate that all 3 CM schedules

Reinforcement schedule thinning following treatment with functional communication training.

We evaluated four methods for increasing the practicality of functional communication training (FCT) by decreasing the frequency of reinforcement for alternative behavior. Three participants whose problem behaviors were maintained by positive reinforcement were treated successfully with FCT in which reinforcement for alternative behavior was initially delivered on fixed-ratio (FR) 1 schedules. One participant was then exposed to increasing delays to reinforcement under FR 1, a graduated fixed-interval (FI) schedule, and a graduated multiple-schedule arrangement in which signaled periods of rei

Cocaine and d-amphetamine self-administration under a differential reinforcement of low rates schedule of reinforcement in rats.

Stimulant misuse is strongly associated with behavioral impulsivity, including impairments in behavioral inhibition, yet few studies have examined drug self-administration in ways that directly assess inhibitory control. This study aimed to discover if intravenous (IV) self-administration of cocaine and d-amphetamine could be established using a differential reinforcement of low rates (DRL) schedule in rats and whether stimulant intake altered behavioral inhibition. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to lever press under DRL schedules with food reinforcement, then transitioned to IV cocaine

Evaluation of the Reinforcing Strength of Phendimetrazine Using a Progressive-Ratio Schedule of Reinforcement in Rhesus Monkeys.

Stimulant abuse is a persistent public health problem with no Food and Drug Administration-approved pharmacotherapy. Although monoamine-releasing drugs such as d-amphetamine can decrease cocaine self-administration in human and animal laboratory studies, their potential for abuse limits clinical utility. "Abuse-deterrent" formulations of monoamine releasers, such as prodrugs, hold greater clinical promise if their abuse potential is, as theorized, lower than that of cocaine. In these studies, we determined the reinforcing strength of phendimetrazine (PDM), a prodrug for the amphetamine-like mo

Schedule control with a synchronous reinforcement treadmill preparation: A replication and extension.

Pinkston et al. (2024) provided 17 participants with their high-preference music for increasing and decreasing their walking speeds on a treadmill. The results showed that high-preference music produced schedule control of walking speed for 14 of 17 (82.35%) participants. In addition, Pinkston et al. found that 78.57% of participants whose walking showed schedule control also displayed variable responding during an extinction component. As an extension of Pinkston et al., we presented 25 participants with their high-preference music for walking on a treadmill during a five-component mixed sche

Evaluating competing activities to enhance functional communication training during reinforcement schedule thinning.

Arranging periods in which requests for reinforcement are denied in a multiple schedule may result in increased destructive behavior during these periods for individuals who receive functional communication training (FCT) as treatment for severe destructive behavior. Providing access to competing activities during periods of reinforcer unavailability has been shown to minimize destructive behavior. We evaluated methods to identify effective competing activities for use when thinning reinforcement availability in a multiple schedule and compared competing activities embedded within the multiple

Random interval schedule of reinforcement influences punishment resistance for cocaine in rats.

In an animal model of compulsive drug use, a subset of rats continues to self-administer cocaine despite footshock consequences and is considered punishment resistant. We recently found that punishment resistance is associated with habits that persist under conditions that typically encourage a transition to goal-directed control. Given that random ratio (RR) and random interval (RI) schedules of reinforcement influence whether responding is goal-directed or habitual, we investigated the influence of these schedules on punishment resistance for cocaine or food. Male and female Sprague Dawley r

Comparison of reinforcement schedules in the reduction of stereotypy with supported routines.

The rates and durations of stereotypic behaviors in four adolescents with severe mental retardation were measured during two daily vocational training sessions and during contiguous periods of leisure in their special education classrooms. Vocational training was conducted in two different tasks, alternating across days. The task requirements for each participant were matched to each participant's learning and performance characteristics. The participants were exposed to a fixed ratio schedule of tokens exchangeable for food items on one task and to a variable interval schedule for the same co

Alternative fixed-ratio fixed-interval schedules of reinforcement.

Five rats were trained under alternative fixed-ratio fixed-interval schedules, in which food reinforcement was provided for the completion of either a fixed-ratio or a fixed-interval requirement, whichever was met first. Overall response rate and running rate (the rate of responding after the postreinforcement pause) decreased for all subjects as the fixed-ratio value increased. As the proportion of reinforcements obtained from the fixed-ratio component increased and the alternative schedule approached a simple fixed ratio, overall response rate and running rate both increased; conversely, as

Concurrent drinking by pigeons on fixed-interval reinforcement schedules.

Three experienced pigeons were exposed to at least ten consecutive 100-min sessions on each of three food-reinforced fixed-interval (FI) schedules: FI 50-sec, FI 100-sec and FI 200-sec. Water was freely available. Drinking was largely confined to the first third of each fixed interval, and the mean sessional water intake was directly related to the food-reinforcement rate for each animal. The animals drank very quickly, i.e., 3--4 ml/sec, but the drinking bouts were brief, i.e., 0.8--1.4 sec, and infrequent, i.e., 2--5/hr. The parameters describing concurrent drinking in the pigeon are strikin

Polydipsia induced in rats by second-order schedules of reinforcement.

Three rats were exposed to a second-order schedule in which fixed-interval components ended either with food or with a brief stimulus that was never paired with food. Food and the brief stimulus occurred in a random sequence (variable-ratio 2 overall schedule). Another three rats were exposed to a similar second-order schedule, the only difference being that the food or the stimulus was presented independently of operant behavior (fixed-time components). The three rats exposed to the fixed-interval components licked at a water spout after each food presentation. These rats also licked in the i

The effects of schedule history and the opportunity for adjunctive responding on behavior during a fixed-interval schedule of reinforcement.

The effects of schedule history and the availability of an adjunctive response (polydipsia) on fixed-interval schedule performance were investigated. Two rats first pressed levers under a schedule of food reinforcement with an interresponse time greater than 11 s, and 2 others responded under a fixed-ratio 40 schedule. All 4 were then exposed to a fixed-interval 15-s schedule. Water was continuously available under these conditions, but after responding became stable on the fixed-interval schedule, access was experimentally manipulated. With water freely available, subjects did not display cha

An analysis of the value of token reinforcement using a multiple-schedule assessment.

Token systems are widely used in clinical settings, necessitating the development of methods to evaluate the reinforcing value of these systems. In the current paper, we replicated the use of a multiple-schedule reinforcer assessment (MSA; Smaby, MacDonald, Ahearn, & Dube, 2007) to evaluate the components of a token economy system for 4 learners with autism. Token systems had reinforcing value similar to primary reinforcers for 2 of the 4 learners, but resulted in lower rates of responding than primary reinforcers for the other 2 learners. Differentiated responding across learners may warrant

Reinforcement learning for chemotherapy scheduling in a stochastic tumor evolution model.

We present a Q-learning framework for optimizing chemotherapy dosing schedules in a stochastic finite-cell model of tumor evolution under drug-induced selection. The tumor consists of three competing subpopulations: a chemosensitive lineage, S, and two single-drug-resistant lineages, R_{1} and R_{2}, each resistant to one of two cytotoxic agents, C_{1} and C_{2}. Drug administration is formulated as a discrete action space in a finite-state Markov process, where the state is defined by the composition (S,R_{1},R_{2}) constrained by a fixed population size N. Tumor volume evolves according to a

The effects of work-reinforcer schedules on skill acquisition for children with autism.

This study evaluated the effects of continuous and discontinuous work-reinforcer schedule arrangements on skill acquisition for three students with autism. Participants were initially exposed to both schedules in an alternating schedules condition where they were taught different but equivalent skills for each schedule. In the discontinuous schedule condition, participants completed work in small increments to gain access to a reinforcer for short periods of time. In the continuous schedule condition, participants completed larger increments of work to gain longer access to a reinforcer. Resul

Context dependent changes in the reinforcing strength of schedule-induced drinking.

Previous experiments show that the opportunity to engage in schedule-induced responding is reinforcing. In this experiment, the reinforcing strength of schedule-induced drinking was measured. Four rats were trained on a concurrent-chain schedule. The two terminal links provided food pellets on identical fixed-time schedules. In addition, one terminal link also provided the opportunity to press a button that operated a water dipper. In this link, the rats showed polydipsic drinking. Button-pressing rate for polydipsic drinking was a bitonic function of pellet rate, and it was possible to descri
