Virtual Care Remuneration Policy and Postdischarge Follow-Up Trends.

IMPORTANCE: Timely follow-up after pediatric hospitalization is critical to support safe discharge, yet many children face barriers to in-person visits. Virtual care may facilitate follow-up; however, its association with follow-up trends remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether a system-wide virtual care remuneration policy, characterized by virtual care physician billing codes, was associated with changes in 7-day postdischarge follow-up rates overall and by hospitalization type and equity factors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based, repeated cross-sectional stu

Study partners' views on remuneration in longitudinal Alzheimer's disease research.

INTRODUCTION: Recruiting and retaining participants in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research poses a consistent challenge. Remuneration is one "readily modifiable factor" that could improve recruitment and retention in longitudinal observational AD research, and guidance suggests that all participants and their study partners receive remuneration for participating in AD longitudinal research. METHODS: We surveyed study partners (N = 517) at one Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in the United States regarding their views on remuneration. RESULTS: Study partners felt largely neutral to positive

[New forms of remuneration and care delivery: their impact on rehabilitation].

Current health policy reform efforts in Germany include introduction of a DRG (Diagnosis Related Group) based funding system in the hospital sector as well as integrated delivery of health care and disease management programs, developments that will directly affect the medical rehabilitation sector. Decreasing lengths of hospital stay induced by the DRG system will inter alia entail a shifting of cases and costs to subsequent sectors. Moreover, hospitals might not least seek compensation for shorter hospital stays by extending their scope to include rehabilitation and long-term care services.

[Hematologic and hemostatic tests availability in view of remuneration for medical services].

Hematologic and hemostatic tests are important and indispensable for diagnosing any kind of hematologic disease. Recent advances in hematologic tests are seen in automation of the blood cell counts and morphological analyses that are required for diagnosing hematologic diseases, and in the accumulation and availability of genetic and chromosomal examinations related to their diagnosis. Although hemostatic tests used to be mainly aimed at checking bleeding tendency, they are now being directed toward diagnosing thrombotic tendency. Medical expenses have hardly been increased in past revisions o

The effect of different methods of remuneration on the behaviour of primary care dentists.

BACKGROUND: Methods of remuneration have been linked with the professional behaviour of primary care physicians. In dentistry, this can be exacerbated as clinicians operate their practices as businesses and take the full financial risk of the provision of services. The main methods for remunerating primary care dentists include fee-for-service, fixed salary and capitation payments. The aim of this review was to determine the impact that these remuneration mechanisms have upon primary care dentists' behaviour. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of different methods of remuneration on the leve

Community health workers at the dawn of a new era: 8. Incentives and remuneration.

BACKGROUND: This is the eighth in our series of 11 papers on "CHWs at the Dawn of a New Era". Community health worker (CHW) incentives and remuneration are core issues that affect the performance of individual CHWs and the performance of the overall CHW programme. A better understanding of what motivates CHWs and a stronger awareness of the social justice dimensions of remuneration are essential in order to build stronger CHW programmes and to support the professionalization of the CHW workforce. METHODS: We provide examples of incentives that have been provided to CHWs and identify factors t

The effect of physicians' remuneration system on the Caesarean section rate: the Uruguayan case.

Using data about births from the perinatal information system (PIS) registered in Montevideo (Uruguay), we estimated the probability of having a Caesarian section delivery, controlled by risk factors and the endogeneity of the choice of hospital. In public hospitals in Montevideo there is a fixed payment system, but in private hospitals this procedure has to be paid for separately. In the former, there is no effect on the doctor's income if he performs a Caesarian, but in the latter there is a positive effect. Empirical evidence shows the probability of a Caesarean section increases with the a

Reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted infectious disease markers in blood and blood component donations: Movement from remunerated to voluntary, non-remunerated donations in Lithuania from 2013 to 2020.

Lithuania has a long history of remunerated donations. The first steps towards voluntary, non-remunerated blood and blood component donations started in 2004. Lithuania achieved 99.98% voluntary non-remunerated donations (VNRDs) in 2020. This study aimed to assess the risk of transfusion-transmitted infectious (TTI) disease markers for remunerated donations in comparison with VNRDs in Lithuania from 2013 to 2020. Data were obtained from the Lithuanian Blood Donor Register. The prevalence was calculated as the rate between the number of confirmed positive results for all TTI disease markers (se

Moving on from voluntary non-remunerated donors: who is the best blood donor?

Blood transfusion safety in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is marred by the high prevalence of infectious agents, chronic blood shortage and lack of resources. However, considerable pressure is applied by richer countries and international transfusion bodies to establish voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors (VNRD) as the only source of blood, excluding the traditional family/replacement donors on the grounds of a higher level of safety. Such a policy increases the cost of a unit of blood by two to fivefold and exacerbates the pre-existing blood shortage. This review provides compelling evidence t

Length of stay by ICD-based diagnostic groups as basis for the remuneration of psychiatric inpatient care in Switzerland?

QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY: In an attempt to analyse whether ICD-based diagnostic groups are an appropriate approach to the remuneration of Swiss psychiatric inpatient care, we investigated whether resource consumption in terms of length of stay can be predicted by diagnostic groups as well as by sociodemographic, clinical and admission-specific variables. METHODS: Data of 30,616 inpatients referred to psychiatric hospitals of a defined catchment area in Switzerland between 1997 and 2003 were analysed. RESULTS: The median length of inpatient stay is 23 days, with significant variation between and

Motivation, recruitment and retention of voluntary non-remunerated blood donors: a survey-based questionnaire study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to establish which motivational and socio-demographic factors are important for the development of a long-term commitment as a voluntary, non-remunerated blood donor. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional sample survey of active blood donors in Oslo, Norway, was conducted. Donors filled in a self-administered questionnaire during donation. Data on motivation were analysed using factor analysis. RESULTS: The blood donors' socio-demographic characteristics were found to be similar to those of the population as a whole. The single, most

Fair pay, performance optimizer, or status marker? The social meaning of remuneration for India's women community health workers.

What kind of remuneration is appropriate for a Community Health Worker? The literature on CHW incentives largely emphasizes their impact on worker motivations and on health outcomes, including on non-incentivized outcomes. While these are relevant, they miss what Viviana Zelizer calls the social meaning of money, that is, how social relations and cultural values shape and constrain the qualitative life of different monies. I draw on 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork, including 80 interviews, conducted in 2018-19 in north India on Accredited Social Health Activists or ASHAs, the world's large
