Repetition priming-induced changes in sensorimotor transmission.

When a behavior is repeated performance often improves, i.e., repetition priming occurs. Although repetition priming is ubiquitous, mediating mechanisms are poorly understood. We address this issue in the feeding network ofAplysia Similar to the priming observed elsewhere, priming inAplysiais stimulus specific, i.e., it can be either "ingestive" or "egestive." Previous studies demonstrated that priming alters motor and premotor activity. Here we sought to determine whether sensorimotor transmission is also modified. We report that changes in sensorimotor transmission do occur. We ask how they

The relationship between fMRI adaptation and repetition priming.

Neuroimaging investigations of the cortically defined fMRI adaptation effect and of the behaviorally defined repetition priming effect have provided useful insights into how visual information is perceived and stored in the brain. Yet, although both phenomena are typically associated with reduced activation in visually responsive brain regions as a result of stimulus repetition, it is presently unknown whether they rely on common or dissociable neural mechanisms. In an event-related fMRI experiment, we manipulated fMRI adaptation and repetition priming orthogonally. Subjects made comparative s

Cross-Modal Somatosensory Repetition Priming and Speech Processing.

BACKGROUND: Motor speech treatment approaches have been applied in both adults with aphasia and apraxia of speech and children with speech-sound disorders. Identifying links between motor speech intervention techniques and the modes of action (MoA) targeted would improve our understanding of how and why motor speech interventions achieve their effects, along with identifying its effective components. The current study focuses on identifying potential MoAs for a specific motor speech intervention technique. OBJECTIVES: We aim to demonstrate that somatosensory inputs can influence lexical proce

Cerebral mechanisms of word masking and unconscious repetition priming.

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and event-related potentials (ERPs) to visualize the cerebral processing of unseen masked words. Within the areas associated with conscious reading, masked words activated left extrastriate, fusiform and precentral areas. Furthermore, masked words reduced the amount of activation evoked by a subsequent conscious presentation of the same word. In the left fusiform gyrus, this repetition suppression phenomenon was independent of whether the prime and target shared the same case, indicating that case-independent information about letter strings

Auditory repetition priming is impaired in pure alexic patients.

Alexia without agraphia, or "pure" alexia, is an acquired impairment in reading that leaves writing skills intact. Repetition priming for visually presented words is diminished in pure alexia. However, it is not possible to verify whether this priming deficit is modality-specific or modality independent because reading abilities are compromised. Hence, auditory repetition priming was assessed with lexical decision and word stem completion tasks in pure alexic patients with lesions in left inferior temporal-occipital cortex and the splenium. Perceptually based, modality-specific priming models

Changes in human brain dynamics during behavioral priming and repetition suppression.

Behavioral responses to a perceptual stimulus are typically faster with repeated exposure to the stimulus (behavioral priming). This implicit learning mechanism is critical for survival but impaired in a variety of neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. Many studies of the neural bases for behavioral priming have encountered an interesting paradox: in spite of faster behavioral responses, repeated stimuli usually elicit weaker neural responses (repetition suppression). Several neurophysiological models have been proposed to resolve this paradox, but noninvasive techniques for h

Distinct deficits of repetition priming following lateral versus anteromedial frontal cortex damage.

Object repetition commonly leads to long-lasting improvements in identification speed and accuracy, a behavioral facilitation referred to as "repetition priming". Neuroimaging and non-invasive electromagnetic stimulation studies have most often implicated the involvement of left lateral frontal cortex in repetition priming, although convergent evidence from neuropsychological studies is lacking. In the current study, we examine the impact of surgical resection for the treatment of epilepsy on the magnitude of repetition priming at relatively short-term (30-60 min delay) and long-term (3 months

Repetition priming and the time course of object recognition: an fMRI study.

We investigated the effects of repetition priming on the time course of recognition in several visual areas of the brain using fMRI. We slowed down recognition by gradually revealing the stimuli, in order to prolong the pre-recognition phase. Activation was lower for primed than for non-primed objects overall in both the occipitotemporal region (OTR) and the intraparietal region (IPR). A difference was found between primed and non-primed objects in the rate of increase of OTR activation. We concluded that the IPR, in addition to the OTR, was affected by repetition priming, and that this effect

Effects of prefrontal lesions on lexical processing and repetition priming: an ERP study.

The role of left prefrontal cortex in lexical-semantic processing remains a matter of some debate. Functional neuroimaging experiments have reported blood flow changes in left inferior prefrontal cortex (LIPC) during tasks that involve word retrieval and semantic processing. Some of these studies have also implicated LIPC in repetition priming. To determine the necessity of prefrontal cortex for these types of memory and to elucidate their time-course, behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) correlates of lexical processing and repetition priming were examined in 11 stroke patients with l

Are There Lower Repetition Priming Effects in Children with Developmental Dyslexia? Priming Effects in Spanish with the Masked Lexical Decision Task.

The aim of this study was to compare the reaction times and errors of Spanish children with developmental dyslexia to the reaction times and errors of readers without dyslexia on a masked lexical decision task with identity or repetition priming. A priming paradigm was used to study the role of the lexical deficit in dyslexic children, manipulating the frequency and length of the words, with a short Stimulus Onset Asynchrony (SOA = 150 ms) and degraded stimuli. The sample consisted of 80 participants from 9 to 14 years old, divided equally into a group with a developmental dyslexia diagnosis a

rTMS of the occipital cortex abolishes Braille reading and repetition priming in blind subjects.

To study the functional involvement of the visual cortex in Braille reading, we applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over midoccipital (MOC) and primary somatosensory (SI) cortex in blind subjects. After rTMS of MOC, but not SI, subjects made significantly more errors and showed an abolishment of the improvement in reading speed following repetitive presentation of the same word list, suggesting a role of the visual cortex in repetition priming in the blind.

The effect of repetition lag on electrophysiological and haemodynamic correlates of visual object priming.

The modulation of repetition effects by the lag between first and second presentations of a visual object during a speeded semantic judgment task was examined using both scalp event-related potentials (ERPs) and event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (efMRI). Four levels of lag were used within a single session, from zero to one, to tens of intervening stimuli, and which allowed partial separation of the effects of interference from the effects of time. Reaction times (RTs) showed that the magnitude of repetition priming decreased as lag increased. The ERP data showed two distinct

Multiple levels of visual object constancy revealed by event-related fMRI of repetition priming.

We conducted two event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments to investigate the neural substrates of visual object recognition in humans. We used a repetition-priming method with visual stimuli recurring at unpredictable intervals, either with the same appearance or with changes in size, viewpoint or exemplar. Lateral occipital and posterior inferior temporal cortex showed lower activity for repetitions of both real and non-sense objects; fusiform and left inferior frontal regions showed decreases for repetitions of only real objects. Repetition of different exemplar

Characterizing the neural mechanisms of skill learning and repetition priming: evidence from mirror reading.

The changes in brain activity related to skill learning and repetition priming in a mirror-reading task were examined using functional MRI. Subjects exhibited significant learning across five training sessions and this learning generalized significantly to different spatial transformations (inverted-mirror reversed text and normal letters spelled backwards). Mirror reading, compared with reading normal text, was associated with extensive activation in occipital, temporal, parietal and frontal regions. Learning to read mirror-reversed (MR) text was associated with increased activation in left i

Spatiotemporal maps of brain activity underlying word generation and their modification during repetition priming.

Spatiotemporal maps of brain activity based on magnetoencephalography were used to observe sequential stages in language processing and their modification during repetition priming. Subjects performed word-stem completion and produced either novel or repeated (primed) words across trials. Activation passes from primary visual cortex (activated at approximately 100 msec after word presentation), to left anteroventral occipital ( approximately 180 msec), to cortex in and near Wernicke's ( approximately 210 msec) and then Broca's ( approximately 370 msec) areas. In addition, a posteroventral temp

Repetition priming in adults with Williams syndrome: age-related dissociation between implicit and explicit memory.

We examined implicit and explicit memory in adults with Williams syndrome. An age-related dissociation was found; repetition priming (reflecting implicit memory) did not show change with age, but free recall (reflecting explicit memory) was markedly reduced. We also compared the performance of adults with Williams syndrome to adults with Down syndrome and those with unspecified mental retardation. A similar dissociation was observed in adults with Down syndrome but not in adults with unspecified mental retardation. An IQ-related dissociation was also found. Explicit semantic tasks are necessary to study semantic priming effects with high rates of repetition.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to clarify in which experimental conditions the semantic processing of repeated words is preserved. METHODS: We contrasted a short (250 ms) and a long (1000 ms) stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) in two different experiments, using a relatively low proportion of related words (30%). One group of participants performed a lexical decision task (LDT) and a second group performed an explicit semantic matching task with the same words (except for pseudowords) and the same task parameters. In both tasks, word stimuli consisted solely of two prime and two

Within- and cross-language repetition priming in verb generation: evidence from non-proficient Chinese-English bilinguals.

The present study aims to investigate the repetition priming within and across languages in verbs among non-proficient Chinese-English bilinguals, using a verb generation task. The impact of levels of processing on repetition priming was also examined. A total of 160 non-proficient Chinese-English bilinguals participated in the experiments, generating English verbs (Experiment 1) or Chinese verbs (Experiment 2) that corresponded to the same set of 50 translation-equivalent nouns across the two languages. The results revealed significant within-language repetition priming in both deep- and shal

Brain potentials associated with perceptual priming vs explicit remembering during the repetition of visual word-form.

Priming of visual word-form was studied using a reading manipulation in which some words appeared in a backward format (e.g., d-r-o-w) instead of the usual forward format. In Experiment 1, subjects discriminated occasional targets (common first names) from other words with a speeded response. Reaction time was faster for words that had also appeared earlier in the forward format compared to the backward format. Event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded in response to word presentations showed a corresponding difference, a positive offset present during the time interval beginning about 300 ms a

Visual perceptual learning in human object recognition areas: a repetition priming study using high-density electrical mapping.

It is often the case that only partial or degraded views of an object are available to an observer, and yet in many of these cases, object recognition is accomplished with surprising ease. The perceptual filling-in or "closure" that makes this possible has been linked to a group of object recognition areas in the human brain, the lateral occipital (LO) complex, and has been shown to have a specific electrophysiological correlate, the N(cl) component of the event related potential. Perceptual closure presumably occurs because repeated and varied exposure to different classes of objects has caus
