The Return of Repression? Evidence From Cognitive Psychology.

The controversy over alleged repressed and recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) was among the most contentious ever to embroil psychology and psychiatry. Adapting paradigms from cognitive psychology, my research group tested hypotheses pertinent to repressed memory and false memory interpretations of recovered memories. We tested adults who: (1) report recovering memories of CSA after not having thought about their abuse for years; (2) report never having forgotten their CSA; (3) believe they harbor "repressed" memories of CSA; and (4) deny having been sexually abused. We tested

Locus of control, repression-sensitization, and psychological disorder in chronic pain patients.

Examined the relationship between locus of control and psychological disorder in chronic pain patients controlling for the effects of response sets. Fifty-nine patients with chronic low back pain were given Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control (I-E) scale and the MMPI. Multiple regression analysis showed that the MMPI K, F, and Pt scales produced the most efficient prediction of I-E scores. Response set tendencies to dramatize problems and traits that involve excessive rumination and self-doubt were related to external locus of control.

Chronic psychological stress impairs germinal center response by repressing miR-155.

Germinal centers (GC) are vital to adaptive immunity. BCL6 and miR-155 are implicated in control of GC reaction and lymphomagenesis. FBXO11 causes BCL6 degradation through ubiquitination in B-cell lymphomas. Chronic psychological stress is known to drive immunosuppression. Corticosterone (CORT) is an adrenal hormone expressed in response to stress and can similarly impair immune functions. However, whether GC formation is disrupted by chronic psychological stress and its molecular mechanism remain to be elucidated. To address this issue, we established a GC formation model in vivo, and a GC B

Chronic idiopathic urticaria, psychological co-morbidity and posttraumatic stress: the impact of alexithymia and repression.

The objective of this study was to investigate the interrelationship between chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU), psychological co-morbidity, posttraumatic stress, repression and alexithymia. 89 participants with CIU and 105 without CIU responded to an online questionnaire. Both groups completed the general health questionnaire-12, the perceived stress scale, the posttraumatic stress diagnostic scale and the Toronto alexithymia scale-20 and were categorised into four defence mechanism groups (repressive, defensive, high-anxious, low-anxious). CIU participants also completed the Skindex-17 and a

A scientometric and descriptive review on the debate about repressed memories and traumatic forgetting.

Recent work suggests that the debate surrounding repressed memory and traumatic forgetting continues today. To further investigate this debate, we performed preregistered scientometric analyses on publications on the debate about repressed memory to provide information about its bibliometric evolution. Furthermore, we reviewed these publications to highlight the different positions taken by scholars on this debate. We reviewed 434 publications extracted from Scopus and Web of Science from 1969 to 2022. Our scientometric analyses permitted us to visualize the development of the publications on

The reality of repressed memories.

Repression is one of the most haunting concepts in psychology. Something shocking happens, and the mind pushes it into some inaccessible corner of the unconscious. Later, the memory may emerge into consciousness. Repression is one of the foundation stones on which the structure of psychoanalysis rests. Recently there has been a rise in reported memories of childhood sexual abuse that were allegedly repressed for many years. With recent changes in legislation, people with recently unearthed memories are suing alleged perpetrators for events that happened 20, 30, even 40 or more years earlier. T

The Return of the Repressed: The Persistent and Problematic Claims of Long-Forgotten Trauma.

Can purely psychological trauma lead to a complete blockage of autobiographical memories? This long-standing question about the existence of repressed memories has been at the heart of one of the most heated debates in modern psychology. These so-called memory wars originated in the 1990s, and many scholars have assumed that they are over. We demonstrate that this assumption is incorrect and that the controversial issue of repressed memories is alive and well and may even be on the rise. We review converging research and data from legal cases indicating that the topic of repressed memories rem

The Fear of Facing Drives and Desires: Is It Still Appropriate to Reduce Anorexia and Bulimia to Eating Disorders?

This paper reflects a perspective the author has developed over twenty years of practice as a clinical psychoanalyst and as an academic researcher in the field of eating disorders. Anorexia and bulimia are discussed through the lens of psychoanalytic theory, with the support of empirical evidence in clinical psychology research. The author proposes a new way to consider anorexic and bulimic pathology, assigning primary importance to drive repression and object avoidance and stimulating reflections on the phobic-obsessive displacement onto hunger and food. A brief illustrative vignette is inclu

A test of the repression hypothesis in agoraphobics.

In a recent study Turner et al. (1983) employed Bell & Byrne's (1978) Repression-Sensitization (R-S) scale to test the hypothesis that agoraphobics utilize repression as a method of avoiding anxiety-arousing forms of cognition. However, no support was found for this view. Rather, the R-S scores indicated general sensitization and attention to negative affect. In this paper it is argued that, on both theoretical and psychometric grounds, the R-S scale cannot be considered a suitable measure of the repression-sensitization process. A study was carried out in which a number of other defensivity m

Belief in Unconscious Repressed Memory Persists.

On the basis of converging research, we concluded that the controversial topic of unconscious blockage of psychological trauma (i.e., repressed memory) remains very much alive in clinical, legal, and academic contexts. In his commentary, Brewin (this issue, p. 443) conducted a cocitation analysis and concluded that scholars do not adhere to the concept of unconscious repression. Furthermore, he argued that previous survey research did not specifically assess unconscious repression. Here, we present critical evidence that runs counter to his claims. First, we inspected his cocitation analysis a

What science tells us about false and repressed memories.

What does science tell us about memory phenomena such as false and repressed memories? This issue is highly pressing as incorrect knowledge about these memory phenomena might contribute to egregious effects in the courtroom such as false accusations of abuse. In the current article, we provide a succinct review of the scientific nature of false and repressed memories. We demonstrate that research has shown that about 30% of tested subjects formed false memories of autobiographical experiences. Furthermore, this empirical work has also revealed that such false memories can even be implanted for

Can cognitive neuroscience illuminate the nature of traumatic childhood memories?

Recent findings from cognitive neuroscience and cognitive psychology may help explain why recovered memories of trauma are sometimes illusory. In particular, the notion of defective source monitoring has been used to explain a wide range of recently established memory distortions and illusions. Conversely, the results of a number of studies may potentially be relevant to forgetting and recovery of accurate memories, including studies demonstrating reduced hippocampal volume in survivors of sexual abuse, and recovery from functional and organic retrograde amnesia. Other recent findings of inter

Repressed Anxiety: A Concept Analysis.

This concept analysis aims to clarify the uncertain and underexplored concept of repressed anxiety, addressing its complexities and ambiguities to better inform nursing practice, research, and the development of clinical interventions. The Walker and Avant method of concept analysis was applied to literature across psychology, nursing, and sociology. Articles were reviewed using search terms such as "repressed anxiety," "repression," "defense mechanism," and "emotional suppression." Antecedents, characteristics, and consequences of repressed anxiety were identified, and model and borderline ca

Are there precursors to repression?

The author examines the possibility that repression has developed out of phylo- and ontogenetic precursors. The adaptive task of repression is to control instinctual behavior by screening out those stimuli (internal or external) which could trigger unacceptable behavior. Habituation, i.e., cessation of response to a repeated stimulis, is a mechanism for controlling behavior, with properties strikingly similar to repression. It operates by inhibiting sensory input, can discriminate and "recognize" the stimuli to be inhibited, and is impaired by brain damage, drugs (especially barbiturates), and

Debunking myths about trauma and memory.

How trauma victims remember--or forget--their most horrific experiences lies at the heart of the most bitter controversy in psychiatry and psychology in recent times. Whereas experts maintain that traumatic events--those experienced as overwhelmingly terrifying at the time of their occurrence--are remembered all too well, traumatic amnesia theorists disagree. Although these theorists acknowledge that trauma is often seemingly engraved on memory, they nevertheless maintain that a significant minority of survivors are incapable of remembering their trauma, thanks to mechanisms of either dissocia

Repressed Memories (of Sexual Abuse Against Minors) and Statutes of Limitations in Europe: Status Quo and Possible Alternatives.

One of the most heated debates in psychological science concerns the concept of repressed memory. We discuss how the debate on repressed memories continues to surface in legal settings, sometimes even to suggest avenues of legal reform. In the past years, several European countries have extended or abolished the statute of limitations for the prosecution of sexual crimes. Such statutes force legal actions (e.g., prosecution of sexual abuse) to be applied within a certain period of time. One of the reasons for the changes in statutes of limitations concerns the idea of repressed memory. We argu
