Interactions between Mechanisms of Reproductive Isolation.

AbstractSpeciation is responsible for the diversity of species observed today and corresponds to the buildup of reproductive isolation between populations. Reproductive isolation can be generated by different mechanisms that have been extensively characterized, yet how their interactions affect speciation remains largely unknown. Here, we explicitly model the interaction of three key mechanisms (local adaptation, mate choice, and genetic hybrid incompatibilities), quantifying their relative contribution to the evolution of reproductive isolation. We modeled two populations exchanging migrants

Centromere scission drives chromosome shuffling and reproductive isolation.

A fundamental characteristic of eukaryotic organisms is the generation of genetic variation via sexual reproduction. Conversely, significant large-scale genome structure variations could hamper sexual reproduction, causing reproductive isolation and promoting speciation. The underlying processes behind large-scale genome rearrangements are not well understood and include chromosome translocations involving centromeres. Recent genomic studies in the Cryptococcus species complex revealed that chromosome translocations generated via centromere recombination have reshaped the genomes of different

A standardised framework for classifying estimates of reproductive isolation.

Understanding reproductive isolation (RI) between lineages is a central goal of speciation research. While the strength of RI has been estimated across a broad range of taxa, synthesizing these data remains challenging, partially because we lack a common language for classifying and reporting RI estimates. Here, we present the Reproductive Isolation Ontology (RIO), a structured framework designed to standardize the classification of RI estimates across most sexually reproducing organisms. The RIO comprises 3 interrelated domains, each organized into a nested hierarchy of classification terms.

Asymmetric reproductive isolation during simultaneous reciprocal mating in pulmonates.

The generality of asymmetric reproductive isolation between reciprocal crosses suggests that the evolution of isolation mechanisms often proceeds in reciprocal asymmetry. In hermaphroditic snails that copulate simultaneously and reciprocally, asymmetry in premating isolation may not be readily detectable because the failure of the symmetric performance of courtship would prevent copulation from occurring. On the other hand, through their prolonged copulation, snails discriminate among mates when exchanging spermatophores for their benefit and thus may exhibit asymmetric reproductive isolation

The role of female reproductive fluid in mediating reproductive isolation between ecotypes of the three-spined stickleback.

Female reproductive fluid (FRF) is increasingly recognised as a potent mediator of gametic-level cryptic female mating bias in external fertilisers, yet its role in reproductive isolation during early ecological divergence remains largely untested. We examined whether FRF from three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) females on North Uist differentially attracts and sustains sperm from armourless (acidic loch) versus armoured (basic loch) ecotypes. Using a fully crossed diallel design across four allopatric populations and a sympatric contact zone, we quantified spermatozoa accumulati

A toxin-antidote system contributes to interspecific reproductive isolation in rice.

Breakdown of reproductive isolation facilitates flow of useful trait genes into crop plants from their wild relatives. Hybrid sterility, a major form of reproductive isolation exists between cultivated rice (Oryza sativa) and wild rice (O. meridionalis, Mer). Here, we report the cloning of qHMS1, a quantitative trait locus controlling hybrid male sterility between these two species. Like qHMS7, another locus we cloned previously, qHMS1 encodes a toxin-antidote system, but differs in the encoded proteins, their evolutionary origin, and action time point during pollen development. In plants hete

Polyploid speciation did not confer instant reproductive isolation in Capsella (Brassicaceae).

Polyploid formation is a major mode of sympatric speciation in flowering plants. Unlike other speciation processes, polyploidization is often assumed to confer instant reproductive isolation. Shared polymorphism across ploidy levels has therefore often been attributed to multiple polyploid origins, whereas the alternative hypothesis of introgressive hybridization has rarely been rigorously tested. Here, we sequence 12 nuclear loci representing 6 genes duplicated by polyploidy in 92 accessions of the tetraploid Capsella bursa-pastoris together with the corresponding loci in 21 accessions of its

From transects to transcripts: Teasing apart the architecture of reproductive isolation.

Understanding the processes underlying speciation has long been a challenge to evolutionary biologists. This spurs from difficulties teasing apart the various mechanisms that contribute to the evolution of barriers to reproduction. The study by Rafati et al. () in this issue of Molecular Ecology combines spatially explicit whole-genome resequencing with evaluation of differential gene expression across individuals with mixed ancestry to associate the genomic architecture of reproductive barriers with expression of reproductive incompatibilities. In a natural hybrid zone between rabbit subspeci

Recombination in hepatitis A virus: evidence for reproductive isolation of genotypes.

This study analysed phylogenetic evidence of recombination in sequences of hepatitis A virus (HAV) available in international databases. Isolation of distinct recombinant HAV strains has been reported previously; however, the prevalence of natural recombination and its role in HAV genetics remains obscure. Analysis of full genome sequences revealed evidence of common intratypic recombination among the most prevalent subtypes, IA and IIIA. Many of the available complete sequences of these genotypes carried phylogenetic signs of recombination in all genomic regions without obvious hotspots. In a

Cytogenetic components of reproductive isolation in Trimerotropis thalassica and T. occidentalis.

The grasshopper Trimerotropis thalassica (Bruner) has a diploid count of 2n=23 male (XO), 24 female (XX). The two largest autosomes pairs are regularly metacentric, a consequence of fixed pericentric inversions. The X-chromosome is also a fixed metacentric. The remaining nine pairs of autosmes are polymorphic for floating percentric inversions so that the complement consists of a mixture of telocentric and metacentric members. Trimerotropis occidentalis (Bruner) is polymorphic for comparable inversions in only two of its autosome pairs and has a telocentric X. It is however, unique among the s

Maintenance of phenotypic divergence in two sympatric monkeyflowers with weak reproductive isolation.

Sympatric species often exhibit permeable reproductive barriers, yet many of them coexist as phenotypically distinct entities. One way to account for this apparent paradox is that selection on loci that underlie divergent traits render them less likely to cross species boundaries. Chromosomal rearrangements can further help counterbalance the homogenizing effects of hybridization if they capture sets of locally adaptive alleles, suppressing recombination among them. Here, we extensively sequenced two young, co-occurring monkeyflower species, Mimulus glaucescens and M. guttatus , that exhibit m

The evolution of a placenta accelerates the evolution of postcopulatory reproductive isolation.

The evolution of placentation is predicted to intensify intergenomic conflicts between mothers and offspring over optimal levels of maternal investment by providing offspring opportunities to manipulate mothers into allocating more resources. Parent-offspring conflicts can result in the evolution of reproductive isolation among populations when conflicts resolve in different ways. Postzygotic reproductive isolation is hypothesized to evolve more rapidly following the evolution of placentation due to the predicted increase in conflict. We tested this hypothesis by performing interpopulation cro

Ecological specialization and reproductive isolation among closely related sympatric ant-eating spiders.

Biological divergence results from several mechanisms. Defensive mechanisms, such as Batesian mimicry, can cause reproductive isolation via temporal segregation in foraging activity, particularly, in species that closely associate with their model. This seems to be the case of ant-eating spiders, which can be inaccurate Batesian mimics of their prey. Here, we focused on Zodarion nitidum, which has two forms occurring in sympatry, black and yellow. Given the expected noticeable impact of their colour differences on the spiders' interactions with their potential predators and prey, we investigat

Reproductive isolation emerges from coordinated barriers during mating system divergence in plants.

Understanding how reproductive barriers combine to restrict gene flow remains a central challenge in speciation research. Although reproductive isolation is inherently a composite process, most empirical studies have focused on individual barriers in isolation, limiting our ability to capture their joint effects, particularly in systems undergoing evolutionary transitions such as shifts in mating system. Here, we provide a comprehensive, life-cycle-wide quantification of reproductive isolation between two closely related species of the Erysimum incanum complex that differ markedly in mating sy

Condensin dysfunction is a reproductive isolating barrier in mice.

Reproductive isolation occurs when the genomes of two populations accumulate genetic incompatibilities that prevent interbreeding1,2. Understanding of hybrid incompatibility at the cell biology level is limited, particularly in the case of hybrid female sterility3. Here we find that species divergence in condensin regulation and centromere organization between two mouse species, Mus musculus domesticus and Mus spretus, drives chromosome decondensation and mis-segregation in their F1 hybrid oocytes, reducing female fertility. The decondensation in hybrid oocytes was especially prominent at peri

Isolated polyarteritis nodosa of the male reproductive system.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) frequently affects the testis and epididymis. We describe a 29-year-old man with isolated PAN of the testis and review reported cases of isolated PAN of the testis or epididymis. Our patient underwent orchiectomy and at followup 17 months later was without evidence of recurrence or development of systemic PAN.

Male secreted short glycoproteins link sperm competition to the reproductive isolation of species.

Sperm competition is found across multicellular organisms1,2,3,4 using both external and internal fertilization.5,6 Sperm competition and post-copulatory cryptic female choice can promote incompatibility between species due to the antagonistic coevolution of the sexes within a species.7,8,9,10,11 This between-species incompatibility is accelerated and markedly asymmetrical when sexual mode differs, producing the "weak inbreeder, strong outcrosser" (WISO) pattern.12 Here, we show that male secreted short (MSS) sperm glycoproteins of nematodes constitute a gametic effector of WISO. In obligately

Chromosome fusions repatterned recombination rate and facilitated reproductive isolation during Pristionchus nematode speciation.

Large-scale genome-structural evolution is common in various organisms. Recent developments in speciation genomics revealed the importance of inversions, whereas the role of other genome-structural rearrangements, including chromosome fusions, have not been well characterized. We study genomic divergence and reproductive isolation of closely related nematodes: the androdioecious (hermaphroditic) model Pristionchus pacificus and its dioecious sister species Pristionchus exspectatus. A chromosome-level genome assembly of P. exspectatus using single-molecule and Hi-C sequencing revealed a chromos

Concordance of gene genealogies reveals reproductive isolation in the pathogenic fungus Coccidioides immitis.

Simple cladogenetic theory suggests that gene genealogies can be used to detect mixis in a population and delineate reproductively isolated groups within sexual taxa. We have taken this approach in a study of Coccidioides immitis, an ascomycete fungus responsible for a recent epidemic of coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) in California. To test whether this fungus represents a single sexual species throughout its entire geographic range, we have compared genealogies from fragments of five nuclear genes. The five genealogies show multiple incompatibilities indicative of sex, but also share a bra

Isolation and serological characterization of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) viruses from pigs with reproductive and respiratory disorders in Japan.

Three porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome viruses (PRRSVs) were successfully isolated from stillborn piglets and fattening pigs derived from different herds affected either with an epizootic reproductive failure or a severe chronic respiratory distress in Japan. The isolates were reacted with antisera against both European (Lelystad virus) and American (strain 46448) PRRSVs in indirect immunofluorescence (IIF). However, cross immunoperoxidase monolayer assay revealed the close serological relationships between the Japanese isolates and American PRRSV, but not between the Japanese iso
