Reproductive tract infections in horses.

Diagnosis, treatment, and, ultimately, prevention of reproductive disease are vital components of equine veterinary medicine. A thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology is necessary to reconcile the pathologic findings of disease. Only then can a rational treatment plan be formulated. Many recent advances in knowledge about the reproductive system of multiple species have application to the mare and stallion.

Reproductive system infections in women: lower genital tract syndromes.

Gynecological and obstetrical infectious diseases are an important component of women's health. A system approach to gynecological and obstetrical infection helps unify and classify microbial etiology and pathogenesis within a clinical anatomical framework of lower and upper genital tract syndromes. The reproductive system of women includes the vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. During pregnancy, additional tissues include the chorioamnion and placenta together with the fetus and amniotic fluid. We review in two parts reproductive system infection syndromes in women us

Natural Human Antimicrobial Peptides and Female Reproductive Tract Infections.

Female reproductive tract infections (RTIs) are a major health challenge worldwide and are the leading cause of infertility and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The rising incidence of RTIs highlights their status as a major public health issue. Microbial dysbiosis, particularly bacterial, fungal, and viral infections, constitutes the primary etiological factor disrupting female reproductive health. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are evolutionarily conserved host defense molecules that exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against pathogens, as well as anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory

Reproductive tract infections in a family planning population in rural Bangladesh.

In contrast to social, religious, and economic determinants of acceptance and sustained use of family planning in developing countries, perceived side effects resulting from reproductive tract infections can usually be ameliorated easily and expeditiously. This population-based study examines the magnitude and nature of morbidity due to reproductive tract infections among users of various contraceptive methods and among nonusers in a rural community in Bangladesh. Overall, 22 percent of the 2,929 women surveyed reported symptoms of reproductive tract infection. Of the 472 symptomatic women exa

Abnormal bleeding associated with reproductive tract infection.

Reproductive tract infection is an often unrecognized, but relatively common, cause of abnormal reproductive tract bleeding. Postcoital bleeding, menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, and oral contraceptive break-through bleeding are potentially infection-related complaints. The microorganisms most often associated with abnormal reproductive tract bleeding include: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Herpes simplex virus type 2, and microorganisms associated with bacterial vaginosis. The clinical conditions cervicitis, endometritis, and pelvic inflammatory disease and the related microorganisms

Uterine Leiomyoma and Reproductive Tract Infections Detected by Polymerase Chain Reaction.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: For nearly a century, it has been suspected that reproductive tract infections play an etio- logic role in uterine leiomyoma. However, no epidemiologic study of leiomyoma has used the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to compare uterine tissues from cases and non-cases, and to investigate associations between uterine leiomyoma and infections detected by PCR. METHODS: In this case-control study, 92 leiomyoma tissues from cases, and 94 myometrial tissue from controls were screened by PCR for cytomegalovirus, Chlamydia trachomatis, herpes simplex virus-1, 2, and human pap
