Biomaterial Design Inspired by Regenerative Research Organisms.

The efficacy of implanted biomaterials is largely dependent on the response of the host's immune and stromal cells. Severe foreign body response (FBR) can impede the integration of the implant into the host tissue and compromise the intended mechanical and biochemical function. Many features of FBR, including late-stage fibrotic encapsulation of implants, parallel the formation of fibrotic scar tissue after tissue injury. Regenerative organisms like zebrafish and salamanders can avoid fibrosis after injury entirely, but FBR in these research organisms is rarely investigated because their immun

A design-integrated framework for neuroarchitectural research.

This paper presents a multi-stage framework that integrates architectural design logic with empirical testing across representational scales. This exploratory, practice-driven research paradigm seeks to bridge disciplinary divides between (1) empirical rigor and situated experience, (2) visual abstraction and embodied spatial engagement, and (3) neuroscientific measurement and architectural meaning. Through a systematic reassessment of dominant methodological assumptions in current neuroaesthetics and neuroarchitectural studies, with curvature serving as a test case, the paper develops a three

Small N designs for rehabilitation research.

Rehabilitation research presents unique and challenging problems to investigators during both the design and analysis periods. Statistical issues regarding sample size requirements for an adequately powered study may be in direct conflict with realistic recruitment and subject retention goals. Issues of underpowered studies, sample size requirements, and recruitment goals plague rehabilitation research. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) are typically narrow in scope and thus lack generalizability to everyday, yet specific, clinical problems; they are also costly and time-consuming and require

Experimental design and data evaluation in orthopaedic research.

It has been said that we can be of assistance to one person at a time in the operating room, several individuals at a time in the classroom, and multitudes through our work in the laboratory. This final statement is true only if the conclusions we draw from our studies are valid. Failure to adhere to the scientific method can invalidate the conclusions we report. This can occur from failure to define properly the question to be studied, failure to review the available literature adequately, improper randomization of the experimental subjects, introduction of investigator bias into the data col

Research and Design of a Medial-Support Exoskeleton Chair.

To address lower limb fatigue in workers engaged in prolonged standing, this study proposes a structural design for a medial-support passive exoskeleton seat. The design incorporates support rods positioned along the medial aspect of the user's lower limbs and features an adaptive telescopic rod system, enhancing sitting stability and reducing collision risks in workplace environments. Human motion capture technology was used to collect kinematic data of the lower limbs, and a mathematical model of center-of-gravity variation was developed to calculate and optimize the exoskeleton's structural

Population designations in biomedical research: Limitations and perspectives.

In biomedical research, population differences are of central interest. Variations in the frequency and severity of diseases and in treatment effects among human subpopulation groups are common in many medical conditions. Unfortunately, the practices in terms of subpopulation labeling do not exhibit the level of rigor one would expect in biomedical research, especially when studying multifactorial diseases such as cancer or atherosclerosis. The reporting of population differences in clinical research is characterized by large disparities in practices, and fraught with methodological issues and

Scientific standards and the design of case-control research.

A new controversy has emerged over the results of a case-control study alleging a causal relationship between certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIAs) and the risks of agranulocytosis and aplastic anemia. After describing the methods and results of the International Agranulocytosis and Aplastic Anemia (IAAA) study, we review the distinctive methodologic challenges of this study and the requirements for avoiding bias, and then reconcile the study results with the principles of case-control design. As a result of our analysis, we believe that the IAAA study's most important and re

Advancing periodontitis microbiome research: integrating design, analysis, and technology.

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease affecting 20%-50% of adults worldwide, is driven by polymicrobial synergy and dysbiosis. Despite numerous studies on the oral microbiota in periodontitis, significant heterogeneity exists between findings, posing challenges for treatment strategies. To understand the sources of this variability and establish standardized protocols, we reviewed the literature to identify potential factors contributing to these discrepancies. We found most studies focus on microbial communities in periodontal pockets, with fewer investigating microbial composition wi

Glucocorticoids-based prodrug design: Current strategies and research progress.

Attributing to their broad pharmacological effects encompassing anti-inflammation, antitoxin, and immunosuppression, glucocorticoids (GCs) are extensively utilized in the clinic for the treatment of diverse diseases such as lupus erythematosus, nephritis, arthritis, ulcerative colitis, asthma, keratitis, macular edema, and leukemia. However, long-term use often causes undesirable side effects, including metabolic disorders-induced Cushing's syndrome (buffalo back, full moon face, hyperglycemia, etc.), osteoporosis, aggravated infection, psychosis, glaucoma, and cataract. Spina Bifida Research Resource: study design and participant characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Myelomeningocele is a common serious malformation. In the majority of affected individuals, it is believed to be nonsyndromic and determined by the effects of multiple genetic and nongenetic factors. METHODS: The Spina Bifida Research Resource (SBRR) is an ongoing, family-based study, designed to identify maternal and embryonic genes related to myelomeningocele. Families that include at least one individual with myelomeningocele are eligible to participate in the SBRR. Recruitment into the SBRR has occurred in two phases. Descriptive analyses were undertaken to characterize the ca

Introducing a New Research Design: The Multidimensional Interpretative Textual (MIT) Design. Epistemological and Methodological Foundations.

Contemporary nursing research increasingly generates large and complex textual corpora from interviews, open-ended surveys, clinical documentation, policy discourse and professional narratives. Although these materials contain rich representations of professional reasoning, organisational dynamics and patient experiences, their analysis remains largely confined to thematic qualitative approaches or variable-based quantitative models, which may struggle to examine how meanings are organised across extensive corpora. This article introduces the Multidimensional Interpretative Textual (MIT) desig

Adapting Experience-Based Co-Design to Disability Research: Co-Producing the CycLink Co-Design Study.

INTRODUCTION: Participatory methods like experience-based co-design (EBCD) can be used to develop complex interventions, but may need adaptations when co-designers include young people with disability, parents and community partners. We aimed to adapt EBCD through co-production by involving people with lived experience of disability as co-researchers. This paper reports the co-produced protocol and reflects on co-researchers' contributions. METHODS: Guided by a six-stage co-production process, we formed a team of co-researchers, academic researchers, co-design convenors and evaluators. A five

The Design Rationale and Preliminary Evaluation of a Prototype Designed by People With Lived Experience of Psychosis and Professionals: Design Research Study.

BACKGROUND: Experiences of mental distress are considered difficult to communicate, particularly experiences of psychosis. Research indicates that the frequently used medical focus falls short in capturing the nuanced interpersonal dynamics that these altered states may involve. Psychosis may seem very different from a lived experience perspective than it does from a traditional psychiatric perspective. This calls for innovative lived experience-based methodologies. This paper presents the development and preliminary evaluation of a design prototype co-designed to strengthen the role of people

Designing and Conducting Motivational Interviewing Research in Veterinary Clinical Settings: A Practical Guide for Researchers.

Motivational interviewing (MI) is gaining traction in veterinary medicine as an evidence-based approach for engaging clients in conversations that strengthen their intrinsic motivation to change behaviours that affect the welfare of animals in their care. While MI has a substantial and well-established evidence base across human healthcare and related fields, the veterinary evidence base remains small and is currently limited by study design challenges, inconsistent fidelity measurement, and outcome measures that rarely extend beyond short-term changes in communication behaviour. Existing meth
