Dataset of subjective human responses and objective metrics related to motion sickness collected and computed on a winter research voyage.

The SA Agulhas II, a South African (SA) polar supply and research vessel, embarked on a Winter Research Cruise in July of 2022 with 83 passengers aboard. Subjective human responses related to motion sickness were collected from 63 participants through paperbound questionnaires and, in parallel, from 15 participants through a mobile application that is part of a novel human cyber-physical system. Additionally, the human cyber-physical system enabled participant location tracking using near-field communication technology. The motion sickness responses are answers to questions that describe a par

Alcohol treatment research assessment exposure subject reactivity effects: part I. Alcohol use and related consequences.

OBJECTIVE: There has been increasing recognition among alcohol treatment researchers that research assessment exposure subject reactivity effects can contribute to clinical outcomes, decrease study design sensitivity, and confound research findings. The present study is an experimental investigation of two of the more salient components of the research assessment interview (i.e., frequency and comprehensiveness) and their effects on clinical outcomes (Part I: Alcohol Use and Related Consequences) and treatment participation (Part II: Treatment Engagement and Involvement). METHOD: The study de

Who are the convoys of the happiness of Chinese urban residents? Research on social relations and subjective well-being based on the convoy model.

INTRODUCTION: While the rapid advancement of urbanization has driven the improvement of material living standards, it has also brought about rapid social changes and intensified competition. In this "involutive" environment characterized by highly competitive and strong pressure, urban residents tend to fall into a state of "mental exhaustion." Anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and other mental illnesses have seriously threatened public health in Chinese cities. Support from social relations is crucial for enhancing residents' subjective well-being (SWB) and promoting their mental health,

Reflections on researcher departure: Closure of prison relationships in ethnographic research.

BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom has the highest incarceration rate in Western Europe. It is known that women in prison are a vulnerable female population who are at risk of mental ill-health due to disadvantaged and chaotic life experiences. Accurate numbers of pregnant women held in UK prisons are not recorded, yet it is estimated that 6%-7% of the female prison population are at varying stages of pregnancy and around 100 babies are born to incarcerated women each year. There are limited published papers that document the departure of the researcher following closure of fieldwork with women in

Offering aggregate results to participants in genomic research: opportunities and challenges.

Although issues involved in offering individual results to participants in genomic research have received considerable attention, communication of aggregate results has been the subject of relatively little ethical analysis. Offering participants aggregate results is typically assumed to be a good thing, and studies have found that a significant majority of biobank research participants, when asked about their interest in aggregate results, say that access to such information would be important. Even so, return of aggregate results remains a relatively uncommon practice. In this article, we ex

The Lugano statements on controlled clinical trials.

During a consensus conference in Lugano, Switzerland, 175 statements on controlled clinical trials were drafted by 47 representatives from academia, governmental registration agencies and industry in nine countries. Their opinion on these statements was similar to that of 47 'matched pairs' who did not attend the conference. Thus, the opinion of participants and non-participants appears to reflect the general opinion of those currently involved in designing, conducting and analysing controlled clinical trials. The Lugano statements give answers to the following questions: Is the controlled cli

"Stuck in the middle with you": the ethics and process of qualitative research with two people in an intimate relationship.

In this article, the authors discuss their experiences of two separate research projects involving interviews with both partners in care relationships that pushed the ethics of research methods along unfamiliar routes. The desire to understand the relationship from both sides was seen to outweigh the perils of accessing both stories but only when the ethical and procedural elements had been sufficiently worked through. It is those ethical and procedural elements that they share in this article, which is offered as a provocative nudge toward a continued critical appraisal of ethical standards w

The role of trust and relationship building in the ethical recruitment of youth living with HIV in research: perspectives from Kenyan youth living with HIV, their caregivers and subject matter experts.

BACKGROUND: Inclusion of youth (10–24 years) living with HIV (YLWH) in clinical research is critical to addressing their unique vulnerabilities and improving care outcomes. Examining the role of trust and relationship building in research decision-making is critical to designing ethical recruitment and engagement strategies. METHODS: We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with YLWH (10–24 years, enrolled in HIV care at Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) in western Kenya), caregivers (parents and guardians) of YLWH, and other subject matter experts (SMEs). Intervi

Engaging men with penile cancer in qualitative research: reflections from an interview-based study.

AIM: To explore the challenges of engaging men with penile cancer in qualitative interview research. BACKGROUND: Qualitative interviewing offers an ideal tool for exploring men's experiences of illness, complementing and providing context to gendered health inequalities identified in epidemiological research on men. But conducting interviews with men can be challenging and embarking on a qualitative interview study with males can feel like a daunting task, given the limited amount of practical, gender-sensitive guidance for researchers. Reflecting on a researcher's experience of conducting qu

Engaging under-represented oldest old in research: An approach for inclusive recruitment.

INTRODUCTION: Those aged 80 years and over are the fastest-growing sector of the Australian population but are often excluded from research. Oldest old people living alone, in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, and with ill health or dementia, face additional barriers that may hinder their participation in research. METHODS: This paper contributes timely critical commentary on methodological and ethical approaches to engaging under-represented people in research. We draw on our experiences and reflections from a study of social exclusion of people aged 80 years and older living alone in government

Conducting HIV outreach and research among incarcerated drug abusers: a case study of ethical concerns and dilemmas.

This case involves the examination of an ethically problematic event that arose while we were conducting an outreach/early intervention research demonstration project targeted at women who exchange sex for drugs. Subjects were drug abusers--primarily crack-cocaine smokers--recruited by outreach workers on "the street" and in jail. Participants were offered counseling, HIV and syphilis screening, and risk-reduction education. A woman who was a jail inmate tested positive for HIV. In order to obtain medical and other assistance, she would have to reveal her serostatus to jail officials. This cou

When they hear what we say: ethical challenges in presenting research findings to the Huntington disease community.

Sharing findings with the Huntington disease (HD) community and other genetic disease communities is challenging because of the sensitivity involved in effectively communicating findings to participants. We describe our experiences of presenting multi-disciplinary research findings to the HD community, and discuss the need to: (1) balance potential benefits and harms for participants, researchers, and others; (2) demonstrate respect for participants' needs, expectations, and priorities; and (3) ensure transparency and respect for autonomy.

A practical guide to the e-mail interview.

The e-mail interview is a novel technique that has a number of advantages over traditional interviewing, but there are also some disadvantages. In this methodological article, the authors review the issues surrounding the use of the e-mail interview, providing a concrete example of its use, that of interviewing people with alopecia areata regarding psychological issues associated with the disorder. The authors show in the article that the e-mail interview is an effective interview technique but that users must take account of a number of sensitive issues, and there are a number of serious disa

Clinical trials as treatment option: bioethics and health care disparities in substance dependency.

Bioethicists have warned against the dangers of mixing research with treatment. They are concerned that research priorities may take precedence over individual patient needs and that research subjects tend to misunderstand the purpose of research or overestimate the direct medical benefits of participating in studies. Yet, other work has questioned whether clinical research can always be separated from therapeutic benefit for participants. Using in-depth interviews with participants in two phase III randomized U.S. clinical trials for methamphetamine dependency, we examine the treatment option

Benefits of participation in longitudinal qualitative research study.

Although mainstream research institutions and health care organisations are now starting to acknowledge the important contribution of qualitative research, there are still many obstacles to obtaining funding. Consequently, at all points along the continuum of obtaining funds, enrolling participants and conducting the research, qualitative researchers will benefit from being able to refer to, or reference, a body of empirical knowledge that addresses ethical issues raised by those who have responsibility for decision-making about the implementation of research proposals.
