Homeless veterans' satisfaction with residential treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Because little is known about homeless individuals' satisfaction with mental health services or the association between satisfaction and measures of treatment outcome, the study examined those issues in a group of homeless veterans. METHODS: Demographic and clinical data were obtained from intake assessments conducted before veterans' admission to residential treatment facilities under contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care for Homeless Veterans program, a national outreach and case management program. Clients completed a satisfaction survey and the Community-

Who seeks residential treatment? A report of patient characteristics, pathology, and functioning in females at a residential treatment facility.

There has been a growth in the availability and use of residential treatment for eating disorders. Yet there is a paucity of information on the individuals who seek this treatment. This study provides data on 259 consecutive patients (116 adults and 143 adolescents) entering residential treatment for their eating disorders. Upon admission all patients provided individual characteristics data and the following measures: the Eating Disorder Inventory-3 (EDI-3), the Beck Depression Inventory-II, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Eating Disorder Quality of Life (EDQOL), and the SF-36 Health Survey-V

Longitudinal profiles of sleep during residential PTSD treatment.

We investigated longitudinal profiles of objectively measured sleep periods (SP) over the course of residential treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a cohort of U.S. male veterans. Participants (N = 190) slept on mattress-actigraphy systems in a Veterans Affairs (VA) residential PTSD program. The final sample included 4078 sleep periods. Latent class mixed model analyses were used to identify between-subject profiles in sleep period durations, controlling for daily medication intake, over the first fifty days of residency. Logistic regression was used to determine the associat

Programme factors that influence completion of residential treatment.

The aim of this study was to predict retention in residential rehabilitation (RR) services for drug users, focusing on service provider factors. A national postal survey of RR services in England and Wales was carried out and information was obtained from 57 of 87 services identified (65.5%). Service managers were asked to complete a questionnaire asking about treatment philosophy, treatments provided, staff characteristics and staffing levels, as well as overall service size and funding. Services also provided information on the number of clients admitted and the number who had completed, dro

The effects of depression on the treatment of OCD in a residential sample.

Studies investigating the impact of depressive symptoms on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) treatment have yielded mixed findings. The purpose of the study is to extend previous research, which primarily used outpatient samples, to determine whether depression affects OCD treatment outcome among patients receiving intensive residential treatment. OCD patients receiving residential treatment based primarily on exposure and response prevention (ERP) provided data regarding symptoms of depression and OCD at admission and discharge. Patients reported large and significant reductions in OCD symp

Crisis-oriented residential treatment as an alternative to hospitalization.

The La Posada program, a short-term alternative to hospitalization for acutely disturbed chronic patients, combines crisis intervention techniques with techniques developed in halfway houses to enhance independent functioning and counteract regressive, dependent behavior. Highly structured days involving a variety of approaches including group and individual therapy, therapeutic activities, expectations of appropriate behavior, and responsibility for ongoing treatment enable most clients to leave the program within nine days and to begin outpatient and day treatment before discharge. Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Patients in Residential Treatment Facilities.

THIS ANALYSIS COMPARED THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VAGUS NERVE STIMULATION (VNS) THERAPY AMONG PATIENTS WITH INTRACTABLE SEIZURES: a group living in residential treatment facilities (RTF) with a group not living in RTFs (non-RTF). Among a constant cohort of patients with baseline, 3-month, and 12-month data, the RTF group had significantly (P < 0.05) larger numbers of patients with generalized seizures, previous callosotomy, psychiatric disorders, behavioral problems, and Rett's syndrome. Median seizure reductions after 3 months were 33% in the RTF group and 49% in the non-RTF group (P < 0.001); afte

Prison-based substance abuse treatment, residential aftercare and recidivism.

AIMS: This study examined the impact of residential aftercare on recidivism following prison-based treatment for drug-involved offenders. DESIGN: A matched group quasi-experimental design. Survival regression analyses were used to predict time until rearrest. A logistic regression model was constructed for predicting aftercare completion. SETTING: A 9-month in-prison therapeutic community (ITC) and several community-based transitional therapeutic communities (TTCs). PARTICIPANTS: Data were collected from 396 male inmates (293 treated, 103 untreated). MEASUREMENTS: Background information (g

Psychotherapy in residential treatment: historical development and critical issues.

In a time of concern with policies of managed care, more limited financial resources, and reduced lengths of residential treatment for troubled children and adolescents in the United States, we seem to be confronted ironically with an ever larger number of children who are growing up in circumstances of social dis-organization and personal despair. Faced with this dilemma, considerations of issues related to the provision of therapeutic services within residential treatment were provided by an examination of the historical development of the concepts of the milieu and residential care in the U

Gender differences in outcomes from prison-based residential treatment.

This study examines gender similarities and differences in background characteristics, the effectiveness of treatment, and the predictors of post-release outcomes among incarcerated drug-using offenders. The sample of 1,842 male and 473 female treatment and comparison subjects came from a multi-site evaluation of prison-based substance abuse treatment programs. Three-year follow-up data for recidivism and post-release drug use were analyzed using survival analysis methods. Despite the greater number of life problems among women than men, women had lower three-year recidivism rates and rates of

The treatment of dissociative identity disorder in an eating disorder residential treatment setting.

OBJECTIVE: Child maltreatment, dissociation and dissociative disorders have been noted in relationship to eating disorders (EDs) for decades, and their co-occurrence generally is associated with greater morbidity, self-harm and mortality. The concomitant presentation of dissociative identity disorder (DID) with an ED (ED + DID) is especially challenging, and there is limited information on approaches to and the effects of integrated treatment for this serious comorbidity, especially in higher levels of care. There are also limited treatment resources for such patients, since they are often tur

Treatment results of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in a residential treatment program.

Data on the effectiveness of residential treatment for patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are limited. We analyzed patient survey results at admission and discharge from Monte Nido Residential Treatment Program. Of 287 consecutive admissions, 80% (231) "graduated" (completed ≥ 30 days of treatment), and of these (all of whom gave consent), only patients with AN (N = 120) or BN (N = 95) were included (215 of 231, 93%) in this study. Analyses included a comparison of admission vs. discharge variables (paired t-tests) for each diagnosis. At each assessment, graduates com

An environmental scan of residential treatment service provision in Ontario.

BACKGROUND: Ontario has one of the highest rates of substance-related harms in Canada. Residential treatment programs in the province provide a variety of in-house treatment services to support the needs of individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). However, these programs are not standardized, often varying in the type, quality, and availability of services offered, including evidence-based interventions such as Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT). Local treatment systems are also rather fragmented and complex to navigate, creating barriers for potential services users to identify and make in

Impact of residential PTSD treatment on suicide risk in veterans.

INTRODUCTION: In 2019, 17 veterans died by suicide every day. Various suicide prevention treatments have emerged, yet limited research has explored the impact of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment on suicidal ideation and behaviors. METHODS: This study examines the impact of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) on suicidal ideation among veterans in three residential PTSD programs (women's, men's, and PTSD/Traumatic Brain Injury). Interview and self-report data were collected from veterans (n = 446) throughout treatment. RESULTS: Over 50% of veterans reported current suicidal idea

Predictors of Dropout in Disordered Gamblers in UK Residential Treatment.

Within the cohort of individuals who seek treatment for disordered gambling, over half fail to complete treatment. The current study sought to identify predictors of treatment dropout in a sample of gamblers attending a residential treatment facility for disordered gamblers in the UK and to report differences in voluntary and enforced dropout. Data on 658 gamblers seeking residential treatment with the Gordon Moody Association (GMA) was analysed, collected between 2000 and 2015. Measurements included demographic data, self-reported gambling behavior, (including the Problem Gambling Severity In

A naturalistic study of medication reduction in a residential treatment setting.

The primary aim of this pilot study was to ascertain if psychiatric medications could be reduced in a convenience sample of seriously emotionally disturbed children and adolescents over the course of residential treatment. We also sought to understand factors correlated with reduction in the number of medications during treatment. A review of the treatment of 141 patients (n = 112 admitted on medication and n = 29 admitted on no medication) admitted to, and discharged from, a residential treatment setting between 1992 and 2001 was undertaken. Significantly more children were discharged from tr

The effects of residential dual diagnosis treatment on alcohol abuse.

This multi-center study of dual diagnosis (DD) programs involved 804 residential patients with co-occurring alcohol and mental health disorders. The Addiction Severity Index was administered at admission and at one, six, and 12 months after discharge. Repeated measures analysis showed the intoxication rate per month stabilized between months six and 12 with 68% still in remission and an 88% mean reduction from baseline (F = 519, p < .005). A comparison between patients with and without weekly relapse produced significant differences in hospitalization (odds ratio 11.3:1; 95% C.I., 5.5 to 23.2)
