OBJECTIVES: Our primary objective was to investigate the trajectory of resilience from preinjury to acutely after sport-related concussion (SRC; within 10 days of injury) and to time of return to play (RTP) in adolescents. We further sought to determine whether this trajectory differed between sexes. Secondarily, we investigated the associations between resilience and post-SRC symptom burden and length of recovery.
SETTING: A substudy of the multicenter pan-Canadian SHRed Concussions (Surveillance in High Schools and Community Sport to Reduce the Risk of Concussions and their Consequences) pr

Introduction: The high prevalence of anxiety and depression in adults affects their overall functioning. Within Relational Frame Theory, psychological inflexibility is theoretically associated with avoidance of private events and has been linked to greater anxiety and depressive symptoms and lower resilience. However, the integration of these constructs into explanatory models remains limited, restricting the understanding of their interrelationships and potentially relevant protective resources. Objective: To examine the indirect association between psychological inflexibility and psychologic

INTRODUCTION: Sustained adherence to disease-modifying therapies is essential for preventing relapses and long-term disability progression in people with relapsing-remitting-multiple sclerosis (PwRRMS). Although psychological distress is associated with poor adherence, the independent contribution of psychological resilience remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether psychological resilience is independently associated with medication adherence (MA) in PwRRMS who are in remission after accounting for psychological distress, disability level, quality of life (QoL), and clinical fact

BACKGROUND: Resilience can be defined as the maintenance or quick recovery of mental health during or after periods of stressor exposure, which may result from a potentially traumatising event, challenging life circumstances, a critical life transition phase, or physical illness. Healthcare professionals, such as nurses, physicians, psychologists and social workers, are exposed to various work-related stressors (e.g. patient care, time pressure, administration) and are at increased risk of developing mental disorders. This population may benefit from resilience-promoting training programmes.

BACKGROUND: Resilience can be defined as maintaining or regaining mental health during or after significant adversities such as a potentially traumatising event, challenging life circumstances, a critical life transition or physical illness. Healthcare students, such as medical, nursing, psychology and social work students, are exposed to various study- and work-related stressors, the latter particularly during later phases of health professional education. They are at increased risk of developing symptoms of burnout or mental disorders. This population may benefit from resilience-promoting tr

AIM: This study aimed to examine the factors associated with psychological resilience in Sjögren's disease.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 83 patients (F/M: 79/4). Hyposalivation was observed in 41%, while Schirmer's test positivity was observed in 84.3% of patients. Scores of the Brief Resilience Scale, self-reported general health, self-reported oral health, EULAR Sjögren's Syndrome Patient Reported Index (ESSPRI), and physician global assessment for disease activity were noted. A mediation analysis was performed to examine the relationships among these variables.

Discussions on what psychological resilience is, its operationalizations, and approaches to measuring it have occupied the scientific community for decades. This manuscript (1) provides an overview of psychometric methods used to assess resilience, including key characteristics, and (2) evaluates resilience scales through a preregistered, content-analytical evaluation of items based on expert ratings. Items from 83 resilience scales were empirically categorized using a literature-based framework with three main categories (resilience as a process, traits, and environmental factors) and 12 corr

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests an association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) but has not disentangled effects of trauma exposure, PTSD, and psychological resilience following trauma. This study investigated risk of MetS by psychological resilience following trauma exposure.
METHODS: Data are from 42,425 women in the Nurses' Health Study II who completed a survey in 2008 evaluating PTSD symptoms, psychological distress, facets of positive psychological well-being (PWB), and a broad range of covariates. Psychological resilience to trauma was ch

Behavioral health inequity for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs), stemming distally from histories of colonization and continual subjugation, is a challenge that has largely evaded mainstream psychological solutions. Eurocentric psychology conceptualizes the contemporary AI/AN behavioral health environment in terms of compounded trauma balanced at times by remarkable instances of resilience. Decolonized approaches to psychology require a paradigm shift away from approaches that uphold Eurocentric ideals of behavioral health. Resilience, despite its use by minoritized populations glo

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the role of psychological resilience (PR) in shaping the disablement process whereby an initial fall elevates the risk of subsequent falls and losses in physical function. Intervening in this process is an important clinical and public health goal. PR may be a key personal resource with salutary effects that is amenable to intervention.
METHODS: We used Health and Retirement Study participants with longitudinal data (2006-2020). We compared non-fallers (n = 2,158 with two consecutive waves after baseline with no fall) with those who experienced a fall after

The effects of psychological resilience and depressive symptoms on bone health have not been well-studied. This work aimed to evaluate the association between psychological resilience and depressive symptoms on bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporotic fracture in community-dwelling adults in Korea. Data from the Chungju Metabolic Disease Cohort were used. Between May 2007 and March 2011, 4029 participants aged 40 years or older underwent a baseline examination, and approximately four years later, they underwent a second examination. BMD was measured, and resilience and depression scales wer

BACKGROUND: There has been a considerable amount of research focused upon assessing doctor burnout. However, psychological resilience (PR) has been examined far less frequently.
AIMS: To examine the relationship between PR and burnout in Irish doctors in order to identify how PR can be improved-with a particular focus on how doctors can be empowered to strengthen their PR.
METHOD: The ResMed PR survey and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) were distributed to doctors from an Irish teaching hospital.
RESULTS: A total of 322 completed online and paper surveys were r

BACKGROUND: Whether psychological resilience correlates with neurocognitive performance is largely unknown. Therefore, we assessed association between neurocognitive performance and resilience in individuals with a history of childhood abuse or trauma exposure.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study of 226 highly traumatized civilians, we assessed neurocognitive performance, history of childhood abuse and other trauma exposure, and current depressive and PTSD symptoms. Resilience was defined as having > or =1 trauma and no current depressive or PTSD symptoms; non-resilience as having > or =1

Parental burnout is a parenting-specific syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, loss of fulfillment, and emotional distancing. Although its impact on externalizing outcomes such as neglect and hostility has been documented, less is known about its implications for adolescents’ internalizing difficulties. Drawing on dyadic reports from 2,236 Chinese parent–adolescent pairs, the present study tested whether parental burnout is associated with adolescents’ internalizing problems through psychologically controlling parenting, and whether adolescents’ psychological capital (PsyCap)—a highe
