A four-year longitudinal study of once weekly multi-joint resistance training and aerobic training vs. resistance training only.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effects of a four-year exercise program on 49 men aged 60 to 82 years, previously naïve to exercise. Participants chose between a combined resistance and aerobic exercise group or a resistance training only group. METHODS: The combined group (n = 25, age 66 ± 7 years) engaged in a weekly resistance programme featuring seated chest press, seated pull down, and leg press at 60%-70% of one repetition maximum, followed by approximately 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at 70%-90% maximum heart rate. The resistance training only group (n = 24, age 65 ± 5 years)

Velocity Loss During Resistance Training: Implications for Concurrent Training Adaptations.

This study examined the effects of different velocity loss (VL) thresholds during resistance training (RT) on adaptations to concurrent training (CT), with particular focus on strength, endurance, neuromuscular, and hypertrophic outcomes. Forty-one moderately trained men were randomly assigned to one of four groups: CT with RT at 0% (VL0; n = 10), 15% (VL15; n = 10), or 40% (VL40; n = 11) VL, or endurance training (ET; n = 10) alone. Over 8 weeks, CT groups performed squat-based RT at 70%-85% of one-repetition maximum followed by ET (separated by 10 min), consisting of running at 90%-105% (fro

Resistance training is medicine: effects of strength training on health.

Inactive adults experience a 3% to 8% loss of muscle mass per decade, accompanied by resting metabolic rate reduction and fat accumulation. Ten weeks of resistance training may increase lean weight by 1.4 kg, increase resting metabolic rate by 7%, and reduce fat weight by 1.8 kg. Benefits of resistance training include improved physical performance, movement control, walking speed, functional independence, cognitive abilities, and self-esteem. Resistance training may assist prevention and management of type 2 diabetes by decreasing visceral fat, reducing HbA1c, increasing the density of glucos

The Acute and Chronic Effects of Superset Resistance Training Versus Traditional Resistance Training-A Narrative Review.

Mang, ZA, Beam, JR, and Kravitz, L. The acute and chronic effects of superset resistance training versus traditional resistance training-A narrative review. J Strength Cond Res 39(11): 1216-1234, 2025-Resistance training (RT) leads to several health and performance benefits for a variety of people, including ball-sport athletes, occupational athletes, general population lifters, and elderly adults. Despite these well-established effects, a surprisingly high percentage of adults do not participate in consistent RT (∼80%), and several cite "perceived lack of time" as their primary barrier to RT.

Resistance training for people with stroke.

RATIONALE: Levels of physical activity and physical fitness are low after stroke. Low muscle strength is common, particularly on the affected side, and is associated with post-stroke disability. Resistance training exercise interventions could increase muscle strength, improve physical function and reduce disability, and may benefit secondary prevention. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this review is to determine whether resistance training after stroke has any effects on death, disability, adverse events, risk factors, fitness, walking, and indices of physical function when compared to

Rhabdomyolysis after High Intensity Resistance Training.

Rhabdomyolysis, which is a characteristic occurrence in associated with muscle cell necrosis, develops due to various causes. We herein report a rare case of a patient with rhabdomyolysis after high intensity resistance training, in which markedly elevated levels of serum creatine kinase (CK) and urine myoglobin were observed. A previously healthy 37-year-old man presented with severe myalgia and dark urine after performing high-intensity exercise. The patient's serum CK level was 95,100 U/L and his urine myoglobin level was 160,000 ng/mL. His symptoms and laboratory findings gradually improve

Cardiovascular training versus resistance training for fatigue in people with cancer.

BACKGROUND: With prevalence estimates between 50% and 90% of people with cancer, cancer-related fatigue is one of the most common morbidities related to cancer and its treatment. Exercise is beneficial for the treatment of cancer-related fatigue. However, the efficacy of different types of exercise (i.e. cardiovascular training and resistance training) have not yet been investigated systematically and compared directly in a meta-analysis. OBJECTIVES: To compare the benefits and harms of cardiovascular training versus resistance training for treatment or prevention of cancer-related fatigue in

Disuse and subsequent recovery resistance training affect skeletal muscle angiogenesis-related markers regardless of prior resistance training experience.

We recently reported that resistance-trained (T, n = 10) and untrained (UT, n = 11) young adults experience vastus lateralis (VL) muscle atrophy following 2 wk of disuse, and 8 wk of recovery resistance training (RT) promotes VL hypertrophy in both participant cohorts. Skeletal muscle angiogenesis is appreciated for supporting skeletal muscle hypertrophy, but its activity following disuse-induced atrophy in humans is largely unexplored in the context of RT. Thus, we sought to determine whether these outcomes were affected. VL biopsies were obtained at baseline (PRE), immediately after disuse (

The role of instability with resistance training.

There are many instances in daily life and sport in which force must be exerted when an individual performing the task is in an unstable condition. Instability can decrease the externally-measured force output of a muscle while maintaining high muscle activation. The high muscle activation of limbs and trunk when unstable can be attributed to the increased stabilization functions. The increased stress associated with instability has been postulated to promote greater neuromuscular adaptations, such as decreased co-contractions, improved coordination, and confidence in performing a skill. Myokines and Resistance Training: A Narrative Review.

In the last few years, the muscular system has gained attention due to the discovery of the muscle-secretome and its high potency for retaining or regaining health. These cytokines, described as myokines, released by the working muscle, are involved in anti-inflammatory, metabolic and immunological processes. These are able to influence human health in a positive way and are a target of research in metabolic diseases, cancer, neurological diseases, and other non-communicable diseases. Therefore, different types of exercise training were investigated in the last few years to find associations b

Dry-land resistance training for competitive swimming.

To determine the value of dry-land resistance training on front crawl swimming performance, two groups of 12 intercollegiate male swimmers were equated based upon preswimming performance, swim power values, and stroke specialties. Throughout the 14 wk of their competitive swimming season, both swim training group (SWIM, N = 12) and combined swim and resistance training group (COMBO, N = 12) swam together 6 d a week. In addition, the COMBO engaged in a 8-wk resistance training program 3 d a week. The resistance training was intended to simulate the muscle and swimming actions employed during fr

Physiological adaptations to velocity-controlled resistance training.

The force-velocity characteristics of skeletal muscle are such that maximal force is inversely related to the velocity of shortening. This relationship has been observed using isolated muscle preparations and intact muscle groups (e.g. knee extensors). Isokinetic dynamometry has revealed some specific physiological adaptations to different velocities of training: an increase in torque and power that are greater at or near the velocity of training; a transfer of torque gains to slower and faster angular velocities after intermediate velocity resistance training; increases in maximal oxygen cons

Resistance Training, Antioxidant Status, and Antioxidant Supplementation.

Resistance training is known to promote the generation of reactive oxygen species. Although this can likely upregulate the natural, endogenous antioxidant defense systems, high amounts of reactive oxygen species can cause skeletal muscle damage, fatigue, and impair recovery. To prevent these, antioxidant supplements are commonly consumed along with exercise. Recently, it has been shown that these reactive oxygen species are important for the cellular adaptation process, acting as redox signaling molecules. However, most of the research regarding antioxidant status and antioxidant supplementati

Comparative effects of cognitive and instability resistance training versus instability resistance training on balance and cognition in elderly women.

This study investigates the effects of integrated instability resistance training and cognitive training (IRCT) versus isolated instability resistance training (IRT) on balance, gait, muscle strength, and cognitive functions in elderly women. This randomized controlled trial included 36 participants, with 18 in the IRCT group and 18 in the IRT group. The sample size was estimated to achieve a statistical power of 0.95 with a large effect size (0.40; n = 12 each group). The closed-eye single-leg stand test was measured for static balance, the closed-eye stepping test, and the Timed Up and Go Tes

Resistance training load does not determine resistance training-induced hypertrophy across upper and lower limbs in healthy young males.

Resistance exercise training (RET) leads to marked interindividual heterogeneity in the hypertrophic response. Whether such heterogeneity is due to endogenous (i.e. inherent biological factors) or exogenous variables (i.e. external load) has not been firmly established. Twenty healthy young male participants completed thrice-weekly resistance exercise sessions for 10 weeks. Each participant had their legs and arms randomly assigned to perform unilateral bicep curls or knee extensions with either a higher (heavier) load (HL: 8-12 repetitions; ∼70%-80% of one-repetition maximum (1RM)) or, in the

Functional Training Induces Greater Variety and Magnitude of Training Improvements than Traditional Resistance Training in Elderly Women.

The objective was to investigate the effects of functional (FT) and traditional (TT) training on trunk muscles maximal isometric strength, rate of force development and endurance with trained elderly women. Forty-five elderly women were directed into three groups: FT (n =1 6), TT (n = 14) and Control (n = 15). The FT (multi-planar, and multi-articular movements) and TT (primarily machine-based resistance exercises) performed mobility, muscle strength and power exercises. Both training groups also performed intermittent cardiometabolic activities. The maximum strength and endurance of the trunk

A scoping review of muscle excitation in resistance training across key training parameters.

Resistance training is widely recognized for its health and performance benefits. Since muscle activation correlates with muscle strength and performance, optimizing training variables to maximize activation during resistance training exercises is of interest. However, the most effective approach remains debated. This scoping review examines the impact of training variables such as intensity, range of motion (ROM), and repetition duration on muscle excitation, measured via surface electromyography (sEMG), in healthy, pain-free adults (≥18 years). Only original research in English was considere
