Facial cooling while using respiratory protective devices in the cold.

The use of respiratory protective devices (RPDs) is essential in various work environments, including those with dust generation. When the work environment is cold, the low ambient temperature can accentuate discomfort from cooling and may influence workers' selection of RPDs, potentially affecting protective efficiency. This study aimed to quantify facial cooling while wearing particle-filtering facepiece respirators in cold conditions. Six different RPDs were selected: two filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs), two powered air-purifying respirators with constant airflow (PAPRC) and two brea

[Comparison of the protective action of 2 respiratory protective devices in farmers with farmer's lung].

With the aid of provocative challenges with hay in patients suffering from farmer's lung, a comparison of the protective effectiveness of the Airstream Helmet (main filter P2) and of the Sundström Mask (main filter P3) was undertaken. A total of 42 farmers were admitted to the study. In 14, as indicated by an expertise, a workplace-related provocative challenge by the farmers' own hay was carried out and was shown to be positive with respect to the presence of farmer's lung disease. In 28 farmers in whom an inhalative provocative challenge with hay had been demonstrated to be positive, inhalat

Addressing the public health gap in respiratory protective devices in the United States.

Public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and major wildfires have exposed significant confusion about how members of the public can effectively protect themselves from inhaling harmful airborne particles. Unlike many other nations, no single federal agency oversees respiratory protective devices (RPDs) designed for public use against inhaled contaminants. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) currently holds the authority for establishing standards and approving respirators used in workplaces; however, for public sector use, there is a lack of standards for t

Prevalence of Respiratory Protective Devices in U.S. Health Care Facilities: Implications for Emergency Preparedness.

An online questionnaire was developed to explore respiratory protective device (RPD) prevalence in U.S. health care facilities. The survey was distributed to professional nursing society members in 2014 and again in 2015 receiving 322 and 232 participant responses, respectively. The purpose of this study was to explore if the emergency preparedness climate associated with Ebola virus disease changed the landscape of RPD use and awareness. Comparing response percentages from the two sampling time frames using bivariate analysis, no significant changes were found in types of RPDs used in health

Impact of respiratory protective devices on respiration: Implications for panic vulnerability during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The wearing of respiratory protective devices (RPDs) correctly and continually in situations where people are at risk of respiratory infections is crucial for infection prevention. Certain people are poorly compliant with RPDs due to RPD-related annoyance, including respiratory discomfort. We hypothesized that individuals vulnerable to panic attacks are included in this group. No published studies on this topic are available. The evidence for our hypothesis was reviewed in this study as a starting point for future research. METHODS: We selected a set of experimental studies that m

Respirator cartridge test system and test results for benzene and acrylonitrile.

NIOSH approves organic vapor respirator cartridges based upon testing against 1000 parts per million carbon tetrachloride vapors. Data for other organic vapors are necessary for proper use of organic vapor cartridge respirators against those vapors. This paper describes a system designed to test respirator cartridges and canisters and results of cartridge tests against benzene and acrylonitrile at a variety of concentrations.

Common materials for emergency respiratory protection: leakage tests with a manikin.

In areas where respirators are not routinely used, emergencies (such as fires) may occur in which protection from airborne particles is necessary. The following readily available materials were tested on a manikin connected to a breathing simulator to determine the fraction of an approximately 2-micron diameter aerosol that would leak around the seal between the materials and the manikin's face: cotton/polyester shirt material, cotton handkerchief material, toweling (a wash cloth), a surgical mask (Johnson & Johnson Co., Model HRI 8137), and a NIOSH-approved disposable face mask (3M Corp., Mod

Measurement of protection factors of chemical cartridge, half-mask respirators under working conditions in a copper smelter.

The performance of three commonly used chemical cartridge respirators for SO2 was measured under working conditions in a copper smelter. An effective SO2 protection factor for each man-respirator trial was calculated as the ratio between average SO2 concentrations sampled outside the respirator mask and that simultaneously sampled from inside the mask. The in-use SO2 protection afforded by the three respirators proved to be highly variable with mean protection factors of 22, 18, and 13. The distributions of the protection factors and the effects of mask type, facial size, and mask comfort are

Protective value of powered dust respirator helmet for farmers with farmer's lung.

Seventeen victims of farmer's lung were monitored during two indoor feeding seasons for cattle. The victims, who had all recovered from the acute phase of the disease before entering the experiment, used powered helmets for respiratory protection (Air-Stream) equipped with Type P2 filters. Filters were changed once a week. The lung function of each subject was investigated at the beginning and towards the end of the indoor feeding season. Each subject kept a diary about the use of dust respirators, changing of filters, inconvenience related to the use of respirators, and symptoms experienced d

Surgical helmets can be converted into efficient disinfectable powered air-purifying respirators.

BACKGROUND: Filtering facepiece respirators often fail to provide sufficient protection due to a poor fit. Powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) are not designed for healthcare personnel, and are challenging to disinfect. Surgical helmets (SH) are available in many United States hospitals but do not provide respiratory protection. Several modifications to SH have been suggested, but none are sufficiently compliant with safety and efficiency standards. The purpose of this investigation was the development of a filter adaptor, which converts SHs into efficient, safe, and disinfectable PAPRs.

Residence time model for respirator sorbent beds.

An experimental bed residence time model has been developed to characterize the performance of sorbent beds in removing gaseous contaminants. This model is applicable to both adsorption and chemisorption processes. The fundamental characteristics produced can be used to predict the performance of respirator cartridges and canisters over a wide range of operating conditions. A family of performance curves can be constructed for a specific product type for application in determining minimum service life and renewal frequency. This model is described in terms of a dynamic sorption concept, and is

Critical review of international standards for respiratory protective equipment - I. Respiratory protective equipment for particulate-laden atmospheres.

The standards for respiratory protective equipment (R.P.E.) from eleven countries and standards organizations were grouped according to type as particulate removing, gas and vapor removing, airline (fresh air hose and compressed air types), and self-contained breathing apparatus (open circuit and closed circuit). Each group of standards was further divided into specification and performance requirements. This paper is one in a series of three that highlights and critically reviews international respirator standards; it deals specifically with R.P.E. for protection against particulate-laden atm

Critical review of international standards for respiratory protective equipment - III. Practical performance tests.

This paper, the third in a series of papers devoted to review of international standards for Respiratory Protective Equipment (R.P.E.), summarizes in tabular form, compares, and critically reviews standards of different countries or organizations pertaining to practical performance tests (Man Tests). There are similarities, differences and omissions in the national standards that deserve attention. Of the countries or organizations that require Man Tests on particulate and/or gas and vapor respirators, none described in detail the tests to be performed. For example, CEN requires that Man Tests

Utilization of masks by Hutterite farmers.

Respiratory symptomatology and pulmonary function tests were evaluated among 199 male Hutterites who utilized masks during farming and 159 Hutterites who did not use masks. Anthropometric and pulmonary function tests were comparable between the two groups. Symptomatology, including cough, phlegm, and wheezing were more prevalent among mask wearers compared to non-mask wearers. The prevalence of hayfever (p less than 0.02) and asthma (p less than 0.001) was greater among mask wearers vs non-mask wearers. Although the types and percent of individuals from each group raising crops and livestock w
