Increasing cardiac rate by tracking the respiratory rate.

The rate responsive pacemaker using respiratory rate as a sensor was implanted in 22 patients, 19 patients for ventricular pacing and three for atrial pacing. The level of exercise achieved with this system was consistently higher than with a fixed ventricular pacing rate. In addition, no special chemical or mechanical sensors are required; the sensor itself is simple, long-lasting, and energy efficient. Thus, this system adapts easily to the individual patient.

The (human) respiratory rate at rest.

All schoolchildren know how often they breathe, but even experts don't know exactly why. The aim of this publication is to develop a model of the resting spontaneous breathing rate using physiological, physical and mathematical methods with the aid of the principle that evolution pushes physiology in a direction that is as economical as possible. The respiratory rate then follows from an equation with the parameters [Formula: see text]-production rate of the organism, resistance, static compliance and dead space of the lungs, the inspiration duration: expiration duration - ratio and the end-ex

A Retrospective Study of the Respiratory Rate Oxygenation and Respiratory Rate Oxygenation-Heart Rate Indexes in Predicting the Results of Conventional Oxygen Therapy in Patients with Acute Respiratory Failure.

BACKGROUND: Conventional oxygen therapy is a first-line treatment for acute respiratory failure, but accurately predicting which patients will require escalated respiratory support remains a critical clinical challenge. OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical significance of the respiratory rate oxygenation (ROX) and ROX-heart rate (ROX-HR) indexes in forecasting outcomes of standard oxygen therapy in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF). METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 262 ARF patients admitted to the emergency department between June 2021 and May 2023. Patients were categori

Effect of inspiratory flow rate on respiratory rate in intubated ventilated patients.

It has previously been demonstrated that in normal subjects using a volume-cycled ventilator, increasing inspiratory flow rate increases respiratory rate. We undertook the current study to determine (1) whether this effect is also present in patients with respiratory disease and (2) whether the effect is independent of upper airway receptors. Eight ventilator-dependent patients in the intensive care unit were studied. Patients were ventilated in the assist-control mode with the back-up rate set at 0.5 breaths/min to ensure that all breaths were patient-triggered. While tidal volume was held co

Contactless Camera-Based Heart Rate and Respiratory Rate Monitoring Using AI on Hardware.

Detecting vital signs by using a contactless camera-based approach can provide several advantages over traditional clinical methods, such as lower financial costs, reduced visit times, increased comfort, and enhanced safety for healthcare professionals. Specifically, Eulerian Video Magnification (EVM) or Remote Photoplethysmography (rPPG) methods can be utilised to remotely estimate heart rate and respiratory rate biomarkers. In this paper two contactless camera-based health monitoring architectures are developed using EVM and rPPG, respectively; to this end, two different CNNs, (Mediapipe's B

Deep learning for predicting respiratory rate from biosignals.

In the past decade, deep learning models have been applied to bio-sensors used in a body sensor network for prediction. Given recent innovations in this field, the prediction accuracy of novel models needs to be evaluated for bio-signals. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of deep learning models for respiratory rate prediction. We consider three datasets from bio-sensors which include electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmogram (PPG) data, and surface electromyogram (sEMG) data. The deep learning models include Long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, Bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM), atte

Botulinum toxin: influence on respiratory heart rate variation.

Remote adverse effects of local intramuscular botulinum toxin were investigated in a prospective follow-up study. Twenty-six patients with spasmodic torticollis were examined (18 women, eight men, 45 +/- 13 years). Respiratory heart rate variation (HRV) was investigated by a computerized method. Different parameters were recorded (beats per minute, coefficient of variation, root mean square successive difference (RMSSD), spectral analysis, difference and quotient between maximum and minimum RR intervals, mean circular resultant). After one intramuscular injection of 12.5 ng botulinum toxin (Po

Follow-up of a respiratory rate modulated pacemaker.

The efficacy of 27 respiration sensitive rate modulated pacemakers (Biorate RDP-3 Biotec) implanted in the left pectoral area was evaluated every 3 months during a mean follow-up period of 29 months (range 10-50 months). Rate modulation function was unchanged other than for three patients in whom the auxiliary leads became displaced. Two implants lost ventricular sensing in this nonprogrammable model. In all but the three patients, Holter monitoring demonstrated pacing rate variation corresponding to daily activity. Stress test duration increased from 8.2 +/- 1.5 minutes (in fixed rate VVI rat

Predicting nasal high-flow therapy failure by pediatric respiratory rate-oxygenation index and pediatric respiratory rate-oxygenation index variation in children.

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate whether pediatric respiratory rate-oxygenation index (p-ROXI) and variation in p-ROXI (p-ROXV) can serve as objective markers in children with high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) failure. In this prospective, single-center observational study, all patients who received HFNC therapy in the general pediatrics ward, pediatric intensive care unit, and the pediatric emergency department were included. High-flow nasal cannula success was achieved for 116 (88.5%) patients. At 24 h, if both p-ROXI and p-ROXV values were above the cutoff point (≥ 66.7 and

Nocturnal Respiratory Rate Predicts 3-Year Mortality in Hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Vital parameters such as respiratory rate are well-established predictors of mortality in emergency medicine. In hemodialysis patients, respiratory rate is influenced by multiple factors, including cardiovascular stress and impaired renal acid-base regulation. We hypothesized that higher respiratory rates in hemodialysis patients are associated with increased mortality. METHODS: In 364 hemodialysis patients from the ISAR cohort, a large prospective multicenter dialysis cohort, the mean nocturnal respiratory rate between 0 and 5 a.m. was derived from 24-hour Holter ECG recordings.

Pompe Disease: Cyanosed Hypotonic Infant with Normal Respiratory Rate.

Infantile hypotonia or floppy infant is a diagnostic challenge when it presents with other presenting complaints such as fever, cough or diarrhea. Many times the hypotonia goes unnoticed when other symptom covers the hypotonia and child continues to receive the treatment for other symptoms. We report a rare case from Nepal of infantile Pompe disease who presented with the history of fever and cough in the recent earthquake disaster camp at remote part of Sindhupalchowk, Nepal. He was being treated as a case of pneumonia. Pompe disease can be diagnosed clinically by taking detailed history and

Clinical evaluation of a smart wristband for monitoring oxygen saturation, pulse rate, and respiratory rate.

Recently, photoplethysmography-based vital parameter measurements have increased in popularity. However, clinical evaluation of these measurements is lacking. The objective of this study was to rigorously evaluate the clinical accuracy and reliability of a novel photoplethysmography-based wristband for measuring key vital parameters-oxygen saturation (SpO2), respiratory rate (RR), and pulse rate (PR)-during heart catheterisations. Vital parameters obtained during heart catheterisations by means of a photoplethysmography-based wristband (CardioWatch 287-2, Corsano Health) were compared to refer
