Survey of respiratory sounds in infants.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade there has been an apparent increase in childhood wheeze. We speculated that much of the reported increase may be attributed to the term wheeze being adopted by parents to describe a variety of other forms of noisy breathing. AIMS: To investigate terminology used by parents to describe their children's breath sounds. METHODS: An interview was carried out with the parents of 92 infants with noisy breathing, beginning with an open question and then directed towards a more detailed description. Finally, the parents were asked to choose from a wheeze, ruttle, and

Acoustical studies on respiratory sounds in asthmatic patients.

Changes in the breathing sounds such as stridor and dry and wet rales in asthmatic patients were studied. The breathing sounds were recorded with the small transistor warp type microphone inserted through the nasal orifice into the trachea, main bronchi and segmental bronchi, and were analyzed with sound analyzer. The results were as follows: The whistling rales were caused by the resonance of the bronchial wall, when the vibrating frequency was coincident with its specific frequency. Snoring rales were explained as the sound caused by the air flow passing promptly through contracted bronchi w

On the blind recovery of cardiac and respiratory sounds.

We present a method for smart auscultation by proposing a novel blind recovery of the original cardiac and respiratory sounds from a single observation mixture, in the framework of nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF). The method learns the basis spectra of the mixing sources in unsupervised or semisupervised fashion depending upon the applications. A modified NMF technique is proposed, which enforces the spectral structure of the target sources in mixture factorization, resulting in good separation of target sources, even in the presence of nonstationary noise. Moreover, data is processed i

Measurement of abnormal respiratory sounds during over-ground exercise.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The presence of abnormal respiratory sounds is commonly associated with obstructions of the upper respiratory tract. In order to establish their clinical significance measurements are required of both normal and abnormal respiratory sounds produced by horses exercising over-ground. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether high quality recordings of respiratory sound can be made during over-ground exercise, and to develop a convenient measurement system that can be used to obtain respiratory sounds from horses exercising in field conditions. METHODS: A range of prototype

Investigating into segmentation methods for diagnosis of respiratory diseases using adventitious respiratory sounds.

Respiratory condition has received a great amount of attention nowadays since respiratory diseases recently become the globally leading causes of death. Traditionally, stethoscope is applied in early diagnosis but it requires clinician with extensive training experience to provide accurate diagnosis. Accordingly, a subjective and fast diagnosing solution of respiratory diseases is highly demanded. Adventitious respiratory sounds (ARSs), such as crackle, are mainly concerned during diagnosis since they are indication of various respiratory diseases. Therefore, the characteristics of crackle are

Lung anomaly detection from respiratory sound database (sound signals).

Chest or upper body auscultation has long been considered a useful part of the physical examination going back to the time of Hippocrates. However, it did not become a prevalent practice until the invention of the stethoscope by Rene Laennec in 1816, which made the practice suitable and hygienic. Pulmonary disease is a kind of sickness that affects the lungs and various parts of the respiratory system. Lung diseases are the third largest cause of death in the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the five major respiratory diseases, namely chronic obstructive pulmonary disea

BrachySound: machine learning based assessment of respiratory sounds in dogs.

The early and accurate diagnosis of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) in dogs is pivotal for effective treatment and enhanced canine well-being. Owners often do underestimate the severity of BOAS in their dogs. In addition, traditional diagnostic methods, which include pharyngolaryngeal auscultation, are often compromised by subjectivity, are time-intensive and depend on the veterinary surgeon's experience. Hence, new fast, reliable assessment methods for BOAS are required. The aim of the current study was to use machine learning techniques to bridge this scientific gap. In thi

[Value of monitoring of tracheal respiratory sounds in the diagnosis of nocturnal respiratory dysrhythmias].

Twenty-six patients underwent a polysomnigraphic study allowing sleep staging and respiratory events scoring with the use of the oronasal flow, abdominal, thoracic and total displacement (Respitracet), and ear oximetry. Moreover the patients were also equipped with a tracheal microphone giving a power rectified envelope (sonospirogram). Eleven patients showed abnormal respiratory events that were scored by visual lecture using all respiratory parameters (excluding the sonospirogram) and were classified as obstructive central and mixed apneas-hypopneas. Periodic breathing was also appreciated.

Computerized Respiratory Sounds: Novel Outcomes for Pulmonary Rehabilitation in COPD.

BACKGROUND: Computerized respiratory sounds are a simple and noninvasive measure to assess lung function. Nevertheless, their potential to detect changes after pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is unknown and needs clarification if respiratory acoustics are to be used in clinical practice. Thus, this study investigated the short- and mid-term effects of PR on computerized respiratory sounds in subjects with COPD. METHODS: Forty-one subjects with COPD completed a 12-week PR program and a 3-month follow-up. Secondary outcome measures included dyspnea, self-reported sputum, FEV1, exercise tolerance,

[Overnight documentation of respiratory sounds in patients with chronic sinusitis].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Nocturnal worsening of respiration in patients with chronic sinusitis is most likely induced by creeping of mucus from the parasinuses down to the pharynx. The aim of this study was to document respiratory symptoms such as deglutition, wheezing and cough in patients with chronic sinusitis using long-term recording of respiratory sounds. PATIENTS AND METHODS: According to the CORSA (computerized respiratory sound analysis) criteria, long-term recording of respiratory sounds was performed in 20 patients with chronic sinusitis. RESULTS: Wheezing was detected in 30%, (exc

Prognostic values of specific respiratory sounds for asthma in adolescents.

Childhood wheezing is a common condition associated with asthma, but the term is often misapplied. The present study aimed to investigate the prognostic values of specific respiratory sounds for asthma onset in adolescence. In a prospective study, six specific respiratory sounds were evaluated for their prediction of asthma. Parents were asked for respiratory sounds of their initially asthma-free children and to describe them in specified terms. Self-reported doctor-diagnosed asthma of 1,569 children aged 5 to 14 years from Germany was assessed at baseline and at follow-up for up to 12 years l

Respiratory sounds classification using cepstral analysis and Gaussian mixture models.

The Cepstral analysis is proposed with Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) method to classify respiratory sounds in two categories: normal and wheezing. The sound signal is divided in overlapped segments, which are characterized by a reduced dimension feature vectors using Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) or subband based Cepstral parameters (SBC). The proposed schema is compared with other classifiers: Vector Quantization (VQ) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks. A post processing is proposed to improve the classification results.

Computerized diagnosis of respiratory disorders. SVM based classification of VAR model parameters of respiratory sounds.

INTRODUCTION: This article is part of the Focus Theme of Methods of Information in Medicine on "Biosignal Interpretation: Advanced METHODS for Studying Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems". OBJECTIVES: This work proposes an algorithm for diagnostic classification of multi-channel respiratory sounds. METHODS: 14-channel respiratory sounds are modeled assuming a 250-point second order vector autoregressive (VAR) process, and the estimated model parameters are used to feed a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Both a three-class classifier (healthy, bronchiectasis and interstitial pulmo

Regional respiratory sound abnormalities in pneumothorax and pleural effusion detected via respiratory sound visualization and quantification: case report.

Assessment of respiratory sounds by auscultation with a conventional stethoscope is subjective. We developed a continuous monitoring and visualization system that enables objectively and quantitatively visualizing respiratory sounds. We herein present two cases in which the system showed regional differences in the respiratory sounds. We applied our novel continuous monitoring and visualization system to evaluate respiratory abnormalities in patients with acute chest disorders. Respiratory sounds were continuously recorded to assess regional changes in respiratory sound volumes. Because we use

Tracheal sounds for the scoring of sleep respiratory events in children.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Oronasal thermistor and nasal cannula are recommended for the scoring of respiratory events (RE) but these sensors are poorly tolerated in children. The aim of the study was to evaluate tracheal sounds (TS) and suprasternal pressure (SSP) for the scoring of RE during sleep in children. METHODS: We compared the detection and characterization of RE by AASM-recommended sensors ("AASM" scoring), with the detection and characterization of RE by the combination of TS and SSP with respiratory inductance plethysmography-sum (TS-RIP scoring), and TS and SSP only (TS scoring). Analysis of Tracheal and Pulmonary Continuous Adventitious Respiratory Sounds in Asthma.

Continuous adventitious sounds (CAS) are commonly observed in obstructive pulmonary diseases and are of great clinical interest. However, their evaluation is generally subjective. We have previously developed an automatic CAS segmentation and classification algorithm for CAS recorded on the chest surface. The aim of this study is to establish whether these pulmonary CAS can be identified in a similar way using a tracheal microphone. Respiratory sounds were originally recorded from 25 participants using five contact microphones, four on the chest and one on the trachea, during three progressive

Automatic Respiratory Phase Identification Using Tracheal Sounds and Movements During Sleep.

One of the most important signals to assess respiratory function, especially in patients with sleep apnea, is airflow. A convenient method to estimate airflow is based on analyzing tracheal sounds and movements. However, this method requires accurate identification of respiratory phases. Our goal is to develop an automatic algorithm to analyze tracheal sounds and movements to identify respiratory phases during sleep. Data from adults with suspected sleep apnea who were referred for in-laboratory sleep studies were included. Simultaneously with polysomnography, tracheal sounds and movements wer
