Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes bronchiolitis and other significant lower respiratory infections. It spreads mainly via droplets, direct contact, and contaminated surfaces. In most of the United States, the prevalence of RSV infection peaks during the winter. Annually, RSV causes approximately 58,000 hospitalizations and more than 2 million outpatient visits among US children younger than 5 years. It also causes up to 160,000 hospitalizations and 10,000 deaths in adults 65 years and older. Prevention comprises hygiene measures, avoidance of infected individuals, and vaccine and antibo

BACKGROUND: Studies investigating whether respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, non-RSV respiratory infections, respiratory-related disorders, and non-respiratory-related disorders are associated with subsequent wheezing are limited in Japan. We aimed to elucidate the relationship between hospitalization for RSV infection, non-RSV respiratory infections, respiratory-related disorders, as well as non-respiratory-related disorders and subsequence wheezing in Japanese children.
METHODS: This study included 7340 children and was conducted under the TMM BirThree Cohort Study (Tohoku Medical

During the winter 2005-2006, all infants <4 months of age admitted for bronchiolitis or acute respiratory tract infection in a tertiary care pediatric hospital in Paris were tested for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and pertussis with real-time polymerase-chain reaction (RT-PCR). A positive pertussis-PCR was found in 14/90 (16%) infants infected with RSV and in 5/30 negative for RSV. Similar clinical symptoms were found in all RSV-positive infants with or without pertussis co-infection. Most infants (73%) were not vaccinated against pertussis, and the other children had received one or two

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most frequently isolated agent in acute lower respiratory tract infections in children. It is responsible for severe disease in young infants and patients with immune deficiencies or congenital heart disease, and appears to be involved in sudden death in infancy. There is also some evidence for its involvement in the development of asthma following bronchiolitis. Despite encouraging new therapies (ribavirin, immune globulin, recombinant interferon alfa), treatment remains mainly symptomatic. Hopefully the better understanding of the immune response duri

In this review, we describe the history, epidemiology and clinical manifestations of infections attributed to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in children. At present, no cure exists for RSV infection but commonly employed palliative treatments include oxygen and inhaled beta(2)-adrenoceptor agonists, such as salbutamol, to relieve the wheezing and increased bronchiolar smooth muscle constriction. Adrenaline (epinephrine) has been found to be superior to the selective beta(2)-adrenoceptor agonists. Oral or inhaled corticosteroids should counteract the inflammatory response to RSV infection bu

The prevalence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection among severely malnourished children was studied at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria at a time when the infection was known to be prevalent in the community. Nasopharyngeal washings were obtained from subjects on admission and thereafter every 4 days until discharge. RSV was detected by ELISA technique. Of 20 well nourished children who served as controls, 11 were ELISA-positive for RSV (55%). Eight (16%) of the 51 patients who were malnourished were ELISA-positive, four of whom (8%) had nosocomial infe

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most important viral respiratory pathogen of early life. Studies of the immune response in general (and the innate response in particular) to this agent are of interest for a number of reasons. First, severe forms of illness may be a result of enhanced immunologic responsiveness to viral constituents at the time of infection. Secondly, the immune response to RSV may consist principally of innate immune responses at the time of maximum severity of illness. Third, RSV infection in infancy may be linked via immune mechanisms to the development of childhood

Presentation of bronchial asthma, in the years following the first outbreak of bronchiolitis due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was first described by McIntosh, who postulated a common pathogenesis that was confirmed by the greater frequency (50%) of wheezing bronchiolitis and asthma during the more than 5 year follow up of these children. More recently, Hibbert and Schroechkenstein have again confirmed this phenomenon. These authors report that the percentage of asthma was increased by up to 71% in a group of children who contracted bronchiolitis during the first year of life and who we

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is now recognized as a significant problem in certain adult populations. These include the elderly, persons with cardiopulmonary diseases, and immunocompromised hosts. Epidemiological evidence indicates that the impact of RSV in older adults may be similar to that of nonpandemic influenza. In addition, RSV has been found to cause 2 to 5% of adult community-acquired pneumonias. Attack rates in nursing homes are approximately 5 to 10% per year, with significant rates of pneumonia (10 to 20%) and death (2 to 5%). Clinical features may be difficult to distinguish

Respiratory syncytial virus is the most frequent cause of respiratory tract infections in infants and is responsible for annual winter epidemics of acute bronchiolitis. Over the last decades medical therapy has remained unchanged and controversial, despite intensive research. Inhaled bronchodilators are often not effective and should be discontinued if no beneficial response can be documented. Steroids and ribavirin are not indicated in previously healthy infants with acute RSV bronchiolitis. There is some evidence, however, that certain risk groups may benefit from their use. With good suppor

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an RNA virus that causes respiratory tract infections in children. In the North- ern Hemisphere, the peak infection season is November through April. By two years of age, most children will have had an RSV infection. Bronchiolitis, a lower respiratory tract infection, is often caused by RSV. An RSV infection is diagnosed based on patient history and physical examination. Children typically present with cough, coryza, and wheezing. Laboratory testing and chest radiography are not necessary to make the diagnosis. Serious concur- rent bacterial infections are

Originally considered as only a paediatric pathogen, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has recently been shown to be a significant cause of respiratory illness among elderly and high-risk adults. Approximately 170,000 hospitalizations and 10,000 deaths associated with RSV occur annually in people over the age of 65 years in the United States. Although rhinorrhoea and wheezing are common symptoms among adults, the clinical syndrome associated with RSV is not distinctive and thus laboratory methods are required for specific diagnosis. Presently, the combination of reverse transcription PCR and e

BACKGROUND: With the licensure of maternal respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines in Europe and the United States, data are needed to better characterize the burden of RSV-associated acute respiratory infections (ARI) in pregnancy. The current study aimed to determine among pregnant individuals the proportion of ARI testing positive for RSV and the RSV incidence rate, RSV-associated hospitalizations, deaths, and perinatal outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review, following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, using 5 databases (Medline, Embase, Global Health, Web of Science, and Global Inde

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of lower respiratory tract infections in young infants. It is an enveloped, single-stranded, nonsegmented, negative-strand RNA virus, a member of the family Pneumoviridae. Globally, RSV is responsible for 2.3% of deaths among neonates 0-27 days of age. Respiratory syncytial virus infection is most common in children aged below 24 months. Neonates present with cough and fever. Respiratory syncytial virus-associated wheezing is seen in 20% infants during the first year of life of which 2-3% require hospitalization. Reverse transcriptase

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), an RNA virus spread by droplet infection that affects all ages, is increasingly recognised as an important pathogen in adults, especially among older people living with comorbidities. Distinguishing RSV from other acute viral infections on clinical grounds alone, with sufficient precision to be clinically useful, is not possible. The reference standard diagnosis is by PCR: point-of-care tests perform less well with lower viral loads. Testing samples from a single respiratory tract site could result in underdetection. RSV is identified in 6-11% of outpatient r

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia among children aged < 1 year. The majority of children hospitalized for RSV infection are younger than 6 months of age. RSV also causes repeated infections including severe lower respiratory tract disease, which may occur at any age, especially among the elderly or those with compromised cardiac, pulmonary, or immune systems.
METHODS: Using the mouse model of RSV infection, this article examines the immunopathogenesis during acute and chronic phases of the disease. This model allows for measu
