Prevalence of Emotional Exhaustion Among Respiratory Therapists.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory therapists (RTs) face high burnout risk, with rates as high as 79% reported during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that the rate of burnout has decreased since the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We performed a multi-center, multinational study between January 6 and February 1, 2025, evaluating the prevalence of RT burnout. Validated survey instruments were used to measure emotional exhaustion (burnout), incivility, intent to leave, and leadership. RESULTS: We received 1,033 responses (34% response rate). Seven hundred nineteen (70%) respondents were burned out, wi

Endotracheal Intubation Training and Skill Maintenance for Respiratory Therapists.

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal intubation is commonly performed outside the operating room (OR). Although respiratory therapists (RTs) performing endotracheal intubation is a well-established practice, the optimum way for RTs to be trained and maintain their skills is unspecified. The purpose of this study was to describe training methods and skills maintenance methods and to identify barriers that prevent RTs from intubating in some institutions. METHODS: A survey instrument was developed by the author. The survey was posted on the AARConnect online social media platform management section in Marc

[The respiratory therapist in the intensive care unit team].

Qualified respiratory therapists have been an integral part of the U.S. health care system for over 50 years now and are an indispensable part of the system. Respiratory therapy involves the entire respiratory system and should not to be confused with breathing therapy. The latter includes only certain breathing techniques. Since 2005, the German Respiratory Society also offers nurses and physiotherapists training in respiratory therapy. The core competencies of the numerous intensive care respiratory therapists employed in German intensive care units include, among others, the diagnosis and t

Electronic distractions of the respiratory therapist and their impact on patient safety.

Over the last decade, data from the lay press, government agencies, and the business world have identified ever-growing problems with electronic distraction and changes in human relationships in this electronically interconnected planet. As health professionals, we are well aware of the epidemic growth of injuries and deaths related to texting and driving. It should not surprise us that this distracted behavior has affected all levels of health-care providers and has impacted patient care. This advent of “distracted doctoring” was first coined by the Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent Matt R

Inter-observer agreement between physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists for respiratory clinical evaluation in bronchiolitis.

Care providers for children with bronchiolitis use various tools to evaluate respiratory status. The use of a single tool by different types of care provider requires a high level of inter-observer agreement, an aspect rarely studied. This study, involving 82 physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists aimed to evaluate inter-observer agreement for clinical evaluations in children hospitalized for a first episode of bronchiolitis. Respiratory evaluation included three frequently reported parameters of respiratory status: respiratory rate, retraction signs, and wheezing. The frequency of con

Lung ultrasound training: curriculum implementation and learning trajectory among respiratory therapists.

PURPOSE: Guidelines recommend teaching of lung ultrasound for critical care, though little information exists on how much training is required for independent practice, especially for non-physician trainees. We thus aimed to elucidate a threshold number of cases above which competency for independent practice may be attained for respiratory therapists (RTs). METHODS: We conducted a prospective audit of lung ultrasound training between July 2014 and April 2015 in our 20-bed medical intensive care unit. Following theoretical instruction and self-learning, trainees acquired images from 12 lung z

Exploring the adoption of diaphragm and lung ultrasound (DLUS) by physiotherapists, physical therapists, and respiratory therapists: an updated scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The adoption of diaphragm and lung ultrasound (DLUS) by physiotherapists, physical therapists, and respiratory therapists ("therapists") to examine and assess the diaphragm and lungs continues to grow. The aim of this updated scoping review is to re-explore and re-collate the evidence around the adoption of DLUS by therapists. METHODS: This scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Data sources searched included AMED, EmCare, CINAHL, Embase, Medline, PubMed and Pedro. Grey literature sources were searched alongside communication with leading authors in the field. The Part

Feasibility of a Multi-Center Respiratory Therapist Endotracheal Intubation Study.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory therapists (RTs) have historically performed safe and effective intubations, yet there are limited multi-center data assessing their intubation performance. Multi-center data can be used to compare RT intubation performance to that of other professions and identify quality improvement opportunities at hospitals where RTs perform intubation. We aimed to explore the feasibility of a multi-center collaborative to evaluate RT intubation outcomes. METHODS: A data collection tool was developed by the authors and implemented at two institutions. Following institutional review

The Risk of Latent Tuberculosis Infection in Respiratory Therapists in a Country with Intermediate Incidence.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory therapists (RTs) are exposed to aerosols more frequently than other health care workers (HCWs) and might bear a higher risk for tuberculosis (TB) infection. The QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFTG) test was used to evaluate the risk for TB infection in Taiwan, a country with intermediate TB incidence. METHODS: A cross-sectional screening of HCWs, including RTs and other HCWs, with the QFTG test was conducted in Taiwan between October 2008 and December 2011. Those with initially negative QFTG results accepted repeated QFTG testing 1 y later. The positive rates of QFTG in RTs and

The scholarly and practice profile of respiratory therapists in Canada: A cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory therapists (RTs) are expected to provide high-quality care for patients with chronic and acute cardiopulmonary conditions across the lifespan by staying abreast of emerging scientific evidence and effectively integrating it into clinical practice. This integration of evidence is encompassed within the competency of scholarly practice. However, there is currently a limited understanding of RTs' scholarly practice. Furthermore, despite RTs' widespread presence in the Canadian healthcare system, comprehensive studies describing the profiles of RTs are lacking. This study
