PURPOSE: To study the circulation in the retinal vessels in patients with blood dyscrasia due to myeloproliferative neoplasms using non-invasive retinal imaging.
METHODS: Prospective consecutive case series of seven treatment-naïve patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (n = 2), polycythemia vera (n = 4), essential thrombocytosis (n = 1) examined before and after cytoreductive treatment. We investigated retinal circulation with motion-contrast imaging, retinal oximetry and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography.

Gorlin syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder with near complete penetrance. The underlying genetic mechanism is a mutation in a tumor suppressor gene. Clouded leopards in North American zoological institutions have a high frequency of pheochromocytomas and were identified in 32 of 70 (45%) animals necropsied. Archival sections of adrenal gland from 20 adult clouded leopards with unilateral or bilateral pheochromocytomas collected between 1984 and 2011 were examined by light microscopy and immunohistochemistry, and case demographics were reviewed. Affected leopards were older than 10 years of age (mean, 16 years; range, 11-19 years), and males were overrepresented (12 males, 8 females). Pedigree analysis yielded no evidence for heritability.

Clinical observations of 7 patients with metastatic intraocular tumors are presented. The primary sites of neoplasms were breast cancer in 4 women, pulmonary cancer in 2 men and in 1 cancer of prostate. In 4 patients metastases were observed also in the anterior segment of uveal tract. Secondary retinal detachment was found in 6 cases, central retinal artery occlusion in one and ciliary artery occlusion in another one. In spite of radio--and chemotherapy 5 patients died during 1-9 months and 2 remained under clinical observation.

A 61-year-old woman with progressive blindness, initially responsive to steroid therapy, was found to have an undifferentiated neoplasm in the cervix uteri. Bilateral retinal metastasis is a rare disease that represents less than 1% of ocular metastases. Additionally, the prevalence of ocular metastases overall is only 5% to 10%. It is uncommonly found due to the absence of a lymphatic system in the eye.
