Twenty-seven healthy adult patients had visual loss in one or both eyes because of exudation from juxtafoveolar retinal capillary telangiectasis of uncertain cause. These patients were subdivided as follows: group 1, men with uniocular involvement, intraretinal lipid exudation, and telangiectasis largely confined to the temporal half of the juxtafoveolar area; group 2, mostly men with symmetric areas of telangiectasis affecting the temporal half of the juxtafoveolar areas and minimal intraretinal exudation; group 3, both sexes with symmetric involvement of all of the parafoveolar capillary bed

The association between retinitis pigmentosa and retinal telangiectasis has been rarely reported. The case of a young woman affected with retinitis pigmentosa and telangiectasis involving bilaterally and symmetrically the inferior retinal periphery is described. Moreover, the patient showed a high degree edema of the retina produced by the permeabilization of the retinal capillaries (especially foveal capillaries) and by the passage of fluid from the choroid through the damaged retinal pigment epithelium. The telangiectasis were successfully treated with cryotherapy. The telangiectasis found i

We describe a case of iris microhaemangiomas (iris vascular tufts) causing spontaneous hyphaema and where examination showed that the patient also had idiopathic juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis. A systematic search through PubMed, EMBASE and reference lists revealed a total of 90 reported cases of iris microhaemangiomas. To our knowledge, no previous reports have described concurrent findings of iris microhaemangiomas and idiopathic juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis in a patient. Both conditions are acquired vascular diseases, but their pathogenesis and aetiologies are unknown. Iris mi

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic juxtafoveolar telangiectasis (IJT) is a rare retinal vasculopathy of adulthood that may cause central loss of visual acuity. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the type and distribution of fundus changes in patients with this disorder.
METHODS: Medical records of 19 patients with IJT using the Gass & Blodi classification were studied. Eight patients in group 1A (42%) and 11 in group 2A (58%) were analyzed. By projecting color photographs we divided the macula into four quadrants and studied the fundus changes in each one.
RESULTS: All patients in group 1A present

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis presents areas of occult capillary telangiectasis involving the temporal half of the fovea. Its treatment by laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy or intravitreal injection of triamcinolone is unsatisfying concerning visual acuity. Recently it has been demonstrated that intravitreal bevacizumab injection could be successful in the treatment of choroidal neovascularisations secondary to ARMD. The principle of this treatment may be successful for the treatment of idiopathic juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis as well.

This report describes an unusual case of recurrent vitreous hemorrhage and atypical retinal neovascularization in a patient with tuberous sclerosis. During three years of observation, the patient also developed retinal telangiectasis with macular edema and lipid exudation. Although the patient did not have an obvious astrocytic hamartoma, a diffuse, flat retinal hamartoma within the nerve fiber layer was suspected.

In ten adult patients a localized peripheral retinal vascular lesion is described, which is characterized by retinal telangiectasia, formation of aneurysms, deposition of lipoidal material and exudative detachment. All patients were of middle or older age and men and women were affected equally. Small lesions had a definite association with the most peripheral vessels, whereas larger ones appeared more as a tumor-like mass causing exudative detachment with deposition of lipoidal material. Additional neovascularization was present in at least two of the ten patients. The lesion is of clinical i

PURPOSE: To describe a previously unreported condition involving familial spastic paraplegia and a peculiar type of maculopathy.
METHODS: Two pairs of siblings were studied. All four cases underwent serial clinical examinations, fundus photography, and fluorescein angiography. Two siblings had extensive investigations.
RESULTS: Characteristics of the four cases include spastic paraplegia diagnosed in the first decade of life and visual loss at about age 9 due to a maculopathy with an abnormal vascular complex. In the early stages, parafoveal dilatation of the capillary network was noted. The

Coats' disease is characterized by abnormal retinal vascular development (so-called 'retinal telangiectasis') which results in massive intraretinal and subretinal lipid accumulation (exudative retinal detachment). The classical form of Coats' disease is almost invariably isolated, unilateral and seen in males. A female with a unilateral variant of Coats' disease gave birth to a son affected by Norrie disease. Both carried a missense mutation within the NDP gene on chromosome Xp11.2. Subsequently analysis of the retinas of nine enucleated eyes from males with Coats' disease demonstrated in one

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the occurrence of a retinal pigment epitheliopathy associated with macular telangiectasis and intraretinal crystal deposits in three human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients receiving long-term ritonavir as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy.
METHODS: The patient's records were reviewed.
RESULTS: The CD4 T-cell counts at presentation were 163 cells per microliter, 464 cells per microliter, and 349 cells per microliter, and viral loads were undetectable in all patients. None of the patients had a concurrent AIDS-defining illne

Primary retinal telangiectasis or Coats' disease is a non-hereditary retinal vascular abnormality consisting of incompetent telangiectatic and aneurysmal retinal vessels. It is characteristically found unilaterally in boys and occasionally may be associated with other systemic disorders. The authors report the first case of primary retinal telangiectasis with a concomitant diffuse central nervous system venous abnormality.

Coats disease is characterized by idiopathic congenital retinal telangiectasis and exudative retinopathy. Mostly young males are affected. The disease is usually unilateral. Visual prognosis varies from full visual acuity to blindness according to the extent of retinal exudation. Retinoblastoma is a major differential diagnosis particularly in small children but other causes of exudative retinopathy must also be considered. Treatment aims include obliteration of the telangiectasis in order to resolve retinal exudation and achieve reattachment of the retina. Therapeutic options comprise laser c

Because of occasional reports of exudative retinal detachment with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSH) and deafness, we sought to determine by fluorescein angiography whether there is any general relationship between FSH muscular dystrophy and retinal vascular disease. Peripheral retinal capillary abnormalities, comprising telangiectasis, closure, leakage and microaneurysm formation, were demonstrated by angiography in 56 out of 75 individuals with clinical or genetic evidence of FSH. Only 3 patients had relevant ophthalmoscopic abnormalities of the posterior pole and in only 1 was th

The clinical findings of 20 patients with an isolated peripheral retinal mass secondary to retinal telangiectasis were reviewed. The important clinical features were subretinal exudation, vitreous haemorrhage and retinal detachment. No associated systemic abnormalities were identified. Early results suggest that cryotherapy is effective for the reduction of subretinal exudation but not for macular oedema. Patients with extensive retinal detachment complicated by vitreous haemorrhage and epiretinal membrane formation were treated with vitreoretinal surgery.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Abnormal retinal vessels may develop in a region of myelinated nerve fibers, and these vessels may cause vitreous hemorrhages.
METHODS: The clinical histories of seven patients with retinovascular abnormalities in a patch of myelinated nerve fibers are presented. None of the reported patients had other evidence of systemic disease. The cases were traced by a multicentric retrospective study.
RESULTS: Retinal vascular abnormalities ranged from mild telangiectasis to frank neovascularization, with or without obstruction of the capillary network and signs of branch artery an

Strümpell-Lorrain syndrome, or hereditary spastic paraplegia is a genetic disease of the central nervous system affecting the spinal cord and cerebellum. It represents a clinically heterogenous group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive spasticity and hyperreflexia of the lower limbs. Ocular abnormalities include keratitis, macular pigmentary abnormalities, juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis and choroidal neovascularization. We report the first case of choroidal neovascularization associated with Strüpell-Lorrain syndrome treated successfully with intravitreal ranibizu

PURPOSE: To investigate whether individuals, with no family history of ataxia telangiectasia (AT), in whom idiopathic or radiation-induced ocular telangiectasia developed are carriers of ATM gene mutations.
METHODS: The ATM cDNA from lymphoblastoid cell lines established from 16 patients with idiopathic retinal or choroidal telangiectasia and 14 patients with radiation-induced telangiectasia after radiotherapy for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) was screened using the restriction endonuclease fingerprinting technique. The frequency of each detected variant was determined in the French
