Retinoscopic measurement of the refractive state of the rat.

Using retinoscopy, we measured the refractive state of 96 eyes of three different strains of rats: albino Sprague-Dawley, Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) with and without inherited retinal dystrophy, and lean and obese varieties of Zucker rats. Contrary to previous reports, we do not find consistent high hyperopia in the rat, but rather refractions that range from near emmetropia (-0.12 D) to extreme hyperopia (+18.95 D). This range of refractive errors suggests a poorly developed emmetropization mechanism in the rat, and that individual refractions should be performed on animals utilized in e

A retinoscopic survey of donkeys and goats.

PURPOSE: Assess the refractive states of donkeys and goats. METHODS: Forty-two donkeys and 28 goats were enrolled. The mean ± SD ages were 7.68 ± 7.33 years for donkeys and 4.26 ± 2.33 years for goats. Seven donkeys and one goat were <6 months old. Retinoscopy was performed in alert animals, following cycloplegia in goats but not in donkeys. Normality was determined using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The two primary meridians and two eyes were compared using Pearson's correlation and paired Student's t-tests. The association between refractive states and age was examined using one-way ANOVA i

Simulation of realistic retinoscopic measurement.

Realistic simulation of ophthalmic measurements on normal and diseased eyes is presented. We use clinical data of ametropic and keratoconus patients to construct anatomically accurate three-dimensional eye models and simulate the measurement of a streak retinoscope with all the optical elements. The results show the clinical observations including the anomalous motion in high myopia and the scissors reflex in keratoconus. The demonstrated technique can be applied to other ophthalmic instruments and to other and more extensively abnormal eye conditions. It provides promising features for medica

Peripheral Refraction Using Ancillary Retinoscope Component (P-ARC).

PURPOSE: To assess the agreement of retinoscope-based peripheral refraction techniques with the criterion standard open-field autorefractor. METHODS: Fifty young adults (mean age, 24 ± 3 years) participated in this study. Two masked, experienced senior examiners carried out central refraction and peripheral refraction at the temporal 22° (T22°) and nasal 22° (N22°) eccentricities. Peripheral refraction techniques were (a) peripheral refraction using ancillary retinoscope component (P-ARC), (b) retinoscopy with eye rotation, and (c) open-field autorefractor. Peripheral refraction with retinosc

Potential effect on the retinoscopic reflex of scleral expansion surgery for presbyopia.

PURPOSE: In this initial study, we model the impact of crystalline lens movement and tilt, which we postulate are a potential consequence of scleral expansion surgery (SES). We demonstrate the possibility that these lead to an improvement in near vision with no concurrent restoration of lens accommodative function. With the implantation of scleral expansion bands (SEB), Schachar predicts an increase in the amplitude of accommodation not observed objectively. We postulate that the SEB implants cause the crystalline lens to be shifted forward and become misaligned. Using mathematical models of t

Retinoscopic (refractive) estimation of axial length in paediatric aphakia: a comparison with ultrasonic measurement.

AIM: To compare paediatric axial length values estimated from the aphakic refraction alone with axial length values measured by ultrasound. METHODS: Retrospective institutional medical record review of paediatric aphakic patients 12 years of age and younger with documented ultrasonic axial length and objective refraction (retinoscopy) within 3 months of each other. An estimate of axial length was made from the aphakic refraction alone (with an assumed average keratometry value of 44 dioptres) for all patients. RESULTS: 149 eyes of 102 paediatric aphakic patients were identified. The ultrason

A Unique Retinoscopic Reflex Pattern in the Initial Stages of Keratoconus and Its Clinical Significance for Early Keratoconus Detection: A Case Report.

Keratoconus is a bilateral eye anomaly in which the cornea develops gradually, becoming steeper and thinner, causing irregular astigmatism and myopia. This unique case report highlights an atypical retinoscopic reflex that can be observed in the initial stages of keratoconus. While the reflex deviates subtly from the normal form, exhibiting a slightly distorted, irregular, and non-scissoring pattern, it differs significantly from the well-documented "scissor reflex," which is characteristic of moderate to advanced stages. This finding draws attention to the potential utility of the retinoscope

A system of retinoscopy for the aged eye.

A method of retinoscopy is described in which an optical arrangement magnifies the patient's pupil and makes it easier to see the retinoscopic reflex. At the same time, the method permits retinoscopic observation by the emmetropic examiner without need for accommodation, a distinct advantage to the presbyopic examiner. The relationship between retinoscope position and dioptric power-error is linear, a feature that facilitates cylinder determination using a variable-distance technique.

Low-cost adaptive astigmatism compensator for improvement of eye fundus camera.

In this work we show a conceptually simple and cheap means by which to improve retinal image quality in fundus cameras. We will explain how to build a low-cost variable astigmatism-correcting device with a pair of identical commercial ophthalmic lenses. We have developed and tested a low order aberration compensation device capable of correcting astigmatism prescriptions up to -8.00 D with no significant addition of higher order aberrations. A theoretical description of the device, calibration, and improvement in retinal images without employing any image restoration technique will be shown.

Use of refractive direct ophthalmoscopy for estimation of refractive error.

The purpose of this study was to find if direct ophthalmoscopy, a simple technique, could be used to give an approximate value of the refractive correction for a patient. This would shorten the time and lessen the effort to be expended during the following retinoscopic examination done for finding the patient's refractive correction. The use of direct ophthalmoscopy for this specific purpose is especially desirable where retinoscopic examination is quite tedious, e.g. uncooperative patients like children, bed-ridden patients and mentally retarded subjects, in patients with a large central corn

Vision screening and photorefraction - the relation of refractive errors to strabismus and amblyopia.

Isotropic photorefraction is a technique well suited for screening infants and young children for refractive errors. The photorefractive measurements have been empirically calibrated against retinoscopic refractions, so errors exceeding selected criteria can be identified in screening and followed up. Such a screening programme is in progress for the population of 6-9 month infants in the City of Cambridge. In 1096 infants screened 5% have been found to have large hypermetropic errors, 1.3% to show a refractive difference between the eyes (anisometropia) and less than 1% to have significant my

Aphakic ultrasonographic refraction in adults. Comparison with retinoscopy and subjective refraction.

A simple method of aphakic refraction using ultrasonographic axial length measurement and keratometry was tried on 97 eyes of adult aphakic patients. The refractive errors determined by this method and by retinoscopy were compared to the subjective refraction of the same eyes. The ultrasonographically determined refractive errors were significantly nearer the subjective refraction than were the retinoscopically determined refractive errors.

[Monocular diplopia caused by pressure of the upper eyelid on the cornea. Diagnosis based on the "Venetian blind phenomenon" in streak retinoscopy].

BACKGROUND: Abnormal pressure from the upper eye lid can cause a kink in the corneal vault along the lid margin. Depending on whether the lower or upper part of the lid exerts the higher pressure, the upper segment of the cornea acquires a prismatic effect which is base up or down, respectively. This causes a ghost image below or above the main image. In patients whose upper eye lid occasionally reaches down such that the kink traverses the pupillary area, the ghost image appears whenever they raise their lid above its usual position. The purpose of the present paper is to describe a retinosco

Visual accommodation in the flying fox (Pteropus giganteus).

The flying fox, Pteropus giganteus, possesses a papillated retina and was previously thought to lack a mechanism for active accommodation. An investigation of the anatomy and physiology of accommodation in this megachiropteran bat revealed that it has a well developed ciliary muscle and that it can actively accommodate through a range of at least 3.12 D. In addition, it was found that the origin of the retinoscopic reflex does not reside in the receptor layer of the retina, because the focus of the eye is invariant for small changes of angle of refraction.

The use of isotropic photorefraction for vision screening in infants.

Isotropic photorefraction is a technique which makes possible the rapid, economic, large scale screening of infants and young children for refractive errors. The relative size of blur circles reflected from the fundus in 3 flash photographs with different camera settings allows the size and direction of refractive errors to be estimated. The method has been validated against retinoscopic measures on a large group of infants. Findings of a high incidence of astigmatism in the first year are confirmed. Detection of hypermetropia in early infancy by this screening procedure may allow preventive t

Physiology of monocular aphakia.

The refraction of the unilateral aphakic patient has been aided by recent improvements in the ophthalmometer. New techniques simplify retinoscopic assessment of the patient. Choice of the type of correction, ie, spectacle, contact lens, contact lens-spectacle combination, or intraocular lens, depends on several factors. One factor is image size difference in aphakic and phakic eyes, particularly if removal of a second cataract is not imminent and vision is good in both eyes. Simple approaches that allow approximate size correction and effective restoration of binocularity are described. The cu

Characteristics of the human isoplanatic patch and implications for adaptive optics retinal imaging.

Conventional adaptive optics enables correction of high-order aberrations of the eye, but only for a single retinal point. When imaging extended regions of the retina, aberrations increase away from this point and degrade image quality. The zone over which aberrations do not change significantly is called the "isoplanatic patch." Literature concerning the human isoplanatic patch is incomplete. We determine foveal isoplanatic patch characteristics by performing Hartmann-Shack aberrometry in 1 deg increments in 8 directions on 7 human eyes. Using these measurements, we establish the correction q

The effect of continuous light on refractive error and the ocular components of the rat.

Phototoxic induced degeneration of the rat retina is a well-documented phenomenon resulting in losses of photoreceptors and their cell bodies, and an overall retinal thinning. This process may serve as a test of the hypothesis that the retinoscopic reflex originates from the inner limiting membrane of the retina. Retinal thinning should produce myopia in the absence of any other ocular component changes in a stable, mature eye if the inner limiting membrane model is correct. Phototoxic retinal degeneration was induced in 10 albino rats by exposure to 19 days of continuous light (1,800 cd m-2).
