[School phobia in adolescents, treatment and return to school].

School refusal is a particular entity which involves the school, treatment and the family. The therapy is complex and necessarily multimodal. Treatment aims towards a rapid return to full-time schooling in the usual environment. It is backed up by a psychological support network of caregivers and a sufficiently containing and restrictive hospitalisation in a specialised unit.

Return to Learn ECHO: Telementoring for School Personnel to Help Children Return to School and Learning After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Return to learn (RTL) after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) presents unique challenges for school professionals. A multidisciplinary team approach is necessary yet training school professionals is logistically difficult. This paper describes an innovative pilot RTL program and its evaluation. METHODS: Utilizing the telehealth/telementoring program Project ECHO® (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes), this study utilized a multidisciplinary team of subject matter experts to deliver five 1-hour sessions across 5 cohorts of school-based professionals (total of 133 participa

Return-to-school protocols in pediatric concussion care.

Pediatric concussion frequently disrupts school participation, yet approaches to returning to the academic environment remain inconsistently implemented despite growing consensus on the benefits of early, supported school re-entry. This review synthesizes the extant literature on the evidence, clinical guidelines, educational policy, and multidisciplinary practice to examine return to school related issues for youth following concussion and to identify gaps between established recommendations and real-world applications. Across national and international guidelines, early return to school with

Describing High School Stakeholders' Preferences for a Return-to-School Framework Following Concussion.

BACKGROUND: Return to school supports are recommended to facilitate adolescents' re-entry to school following a concussion. However, little is known as to what school stakeholders prefer for a return-to-school process. This study sought to describe the preferences of high school students, parents, and educators for a Return-to-School Framework for adolescents following a concussion. METHODS: We conducted qualitative semi-structured, 1-on-1 or group interviews with high school students (n = 6), parents (n = 5), and educators (n = 15) from Calgary, Canada. Interviews aimed to describe participa

Children's return to school after treatment for solid tumours.

Great advances have been made in recent years in the treatment of children's cancers. Consequently, increasing numbers are now returning to school. The pilot study described in this paper looks at the problems experienced by some of these children, their teachers and parents, and some of the solutions which have been found, with a view to eventually taking some action to help the situation. The results are based on detailed studies of 16 children who had all been off treatment for two or more years and had therefore returned to school on a normal full-time basis. Parents and teachers were inte

An Evaluation of Post-Concussion Return to School Guidelines: A Survey of Massachusetts School Nurses.

Although all states have legislation pertaining to youth sports concussion, most of these laws focus on return-to-play procedures; only a few address return-to-learn (RTL) accommodations for students who have experienced a concussion. To address this gap in the legislation, some states and nongovernmental organizations have developed RTL guidelines to advise school personnel, parents, and health care providers on best practices for accommodating students' postconcussion reintegration into academic activity. In 2018, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) developed RTL guidelines

The influence of a return to school on the long-term adjustment of school refusers.

There is currently a strong emphasis on an early return to school in the management of school refusers . However, many of the studies in this area show a certain similarity in that the efficacy of treatment is measured by the disappearance of school avoidance rather than the long-term adjustment of the child. Very few studies have followed the school refuser into adulthood and even fewer have looked at the prognostic implications of a return to school. This paper reports a study of 34 young people all of whom had been admitted to an in-patient adolescent unit because of school refusal. Half ha

What Comes First: Return to School or Return to Activity for Youth After Concussion? Maybe We Don't Have to Choose.

Objectives: Return to School (RTS) and Return to Activity/Play (RTA) protocols are important in concussion management. Minimal evidence exists as to sequence and whether progression can occur simultaneously. Experts recommend that children/youth fully return to school before beginning RTA protocols. This study investigates recovery trajectories of children/youth while following RTA and RTS protocols simultaneously, with the following objectives: (1) to compare rates and patterns of progression through the stages of both protocols; (2) to evaluate symptom trajectories of youth post-concussion w

Return to School After Traumatic Brain Injury: Description of Implementation Settings.

OBJECTIVE: Children who experience traumatic brain injury (TBI) of any severity may need accommodations when they return to school-the setting that manages academic achievement and learning. However, variations exist in current return to school (RTS) programs that address a child's transition to school following TBI. This article describes some of these return to school (RTS) programs and how they vary by setting. DESIGN: This article provides insights from a modified evaluability assessment that examined RTS programs and their readiness for rigorous evaluation. A secondary analysis was condu

Elamipretide in pediatric Barth syndrome: from heart failure to school return.

BACKGROUND: Barth syndrome (BTHS) is a rare X-linked mitochondrial disorder characterized by cardiomyopathy, neutropenia, and skeletal myopathy. Elamipretide is a mitochondria-targeting peptide that stabilizes cardiolipin and improves mitochondrial function. While use of this treatment in infants with BTHS has been reported in the United States, no cases have been described outside the US or in older children. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the first case of a preschool-aged child with genetically confirmed BTHS and advanced heart failure, who was treated with elamipretide under a compassionate

Return-to-learn after sport-related concussion: does school level matter?

OBJECTIVE: Return-to-learn (RTL) after sport-related concussion (SRC) is an important yet understudied topic. The authors sought to do the following: 1) describe patterns of RTL among athletes by school level (i.e., middle school, high school, college); and 2) evaluate the predictive value of school level on RTL duration. METHODS: A retrospective, single-institution cohort study of adolescent and young adult athletes 12-23 years old who sustained an SRC between November 2017 and April 2022 and who presented to a multidisciplinary specialty concussion clinic was conducted. The independent vari

Management of Return to School Following Brain Injury: An Evaluation Model.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects children's ability to succeed at school. Few educators have the necessary training and knowledge needed to adequately monitor and treat students with a TBI, despite schools regularly serving as the long-term service provider. In this article, we describe a return to school model used in Oregon that implements best practices indicated by the extant literature, as well as our research protocol for evaluating this model. We discuss project aims and our planned procedures, including the measures used, our quasi-experimental design using matched controls, statis

Evaluating Adherence to Return to School and Activity Protocols in Children After Concussion.

OBJECTIVE: The need to have a pediatric-specific concussion management protocol on Return to School (RTS) and Return to Activity (RTA) after concussion has been recognized internationally. The first step to evaluate the protocol effectiveness is to establish whether children and youth are adhering to these recommendations. The objective of this study was to explore the prevalence and predictors of adherence to RTS and RTA concussion management protocols for children/youth. DESIGN: A prospective cohort of children/youth with concussion. SETTING: Childhood Disability Research Centre. PARTICIP

Return to school in the COVID-19 era: considerations for temperature measurement.

COVID-19 pandemics required a reorganisation of social spaces to prevent the spread of the virus. Due to the common presence of fever in the symptomatic patients, temperature measurement is one of the most common screening protocols. Indeed, regulations in many countries require temperature measurements before entering shops, workplaces, and public buildings. Due to the necessity of providing rapid non-contact and non-invasive protocols to measure body temperature, infra-red thermometry is mostly used. Many countries are now facing the need to organise the return to school and universities in
