Topical methotrexate in dermatology: a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Systemic methotrexate (MTX) is a useful treatment for many dermatologic conditions, however, the risk of adverse events prevents its use in patients with minimal or localized disease. Topical application of MTX may be an option to avoid the systemic adverse effects of oral MTX. OBJECTIVE: To assess what is known about the efficacy and safety of topical methotrexate. METHODS: A search on Pubmed was conducted. There were no limits on publication date. RESULTS: A total of 963 articles were discovered. Using our exclusion criteria, 916 articles were excluded; 47 articles were used f

Contact dermatitis to topical acne drugs: a review of the literature.

Acne vulgaris is a chronic dermatological disorder that affects the majority of teenagers in the Western world. Topical therapy is widely used to treat mild-moderate acne and is known as well-tolerated thanks to its low systemic toxicity, although associated to skin adverse effects. Acne seems to be associated also to an intrinsic alteration of the epidermal barrier, regarding both the upper and the follicular stratum corneum that promotes the onset of such local side effects. The commonest one is irritant contact dermatitis, an event of frequent observation occurring with erythema, burning, d

Topical metronidazole for the treatment of wound odor: a review of the literature.

Unpleasant odor is a frequent and distressing concern of persons who have wounds, as well as their family members and caregivers. In some instances, standard nursing interventions such as increasing the frequency of dressing changes will not be sufficient to address wound malodor. A review of the literature to summarize research findings about topical metronidazole used to decrease wound odor was conducted. Fifteen (15) studies were identified: seven case reports/series; six descriptive longitudinal studies; and two controlled clinical trials. Metronidazole was used as a 1% solution or, more f

Topical care in pemphigus wounds: A systematic review of the literature.

Pemphigus is a group of autoimmune blistering diseases. Given the ulcerative nature of the diseases, the full healing of ulcers and erosions might be challenging. The aim of this study was to determine various topical wound care options for pemphigus patients, the advantage of each alternative, and to compare their efficacy, safety, and feasibility. In accordance with PRISMA guideline, we performed a systematic search in PubMed/Medline, web of science, and Scopus databases for articles published from inception until February 2, 2022. Out of 703 initially retrieved articles, 11 full texts were

A Case of Topical Ofloxacin-Induced Otomycosis and Literature Review.

The prevalence of fungal otitis externa, or otomycosis, has been increasing in recent decades. Fungi may act as primary pathogens in this condition, or they may occur as secondary infections after prolonged ototopical treatment with antibiotics, which alters the flora of the external auditory canal (EAC) and enables overgrowth of its fungal inhabitants. We report here a case of otomycosis by Candida parapsilosis, Malassezia obtusa, and Malassezia furfur as a secondary infection following prolonged otic ofloxacin treatment. To the best of our knowledge, although isolation of C. parapsilosis and

Treatment of Central Serous Chorioretinopathy With Topical Difluprednate: A Literature Review.

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSR) is an eye condition where fluid leakage from the choroid causes a detachment of the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for clear vision. Although the existing literature identifies corticosteroids as a risk factor for CSR, there is a growing interest in the use and impact of corticosteroids to treat CSR. The objective of this review is to evaluate the current evidence on the use of difluprednate, a topical ophthalmic medicine to treat inflammation and pain, for the treatment of CSR. The PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched for

Topical Statins in Porokeratosis: Case Report with Focused Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Porokeratosis is a disorder of keratinisation linked to mevalonate pathway defects and often resistant to conventional therapy. Topical statins, which target this pathway directly, represent a rational mechanism-based treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old woman with disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis (DSAP), refractory to calcipotriol and 5-fluorouracil, was treated with compounded simvastatin 2% cream twice daily. After 6 months, erythema and scale were markedly reduced; thin papules flattened almost completely, whereas hyperkeratotic plaques improved only par

Video-laryngoscopes in the adult airway management: a topical review of the literature.

The aim of the present paper is to review the literature regarding video-laryngoscopes (Storz V-Mac and C-Mac, Glidescope, McGrath, Pentax-Airway Scope, Airtraq and Bullard) and discuss their clinical role in airway management. Video-laryngoscopes are new intubation devices, which provide an indirect view of the upper airway. In difficult airway management, they improve Cormack-Lehane grade and achieve the same or a higher intubation success rate in less time, compared with direct laryngoscopes. Despite the very good visualization of the glottis, the insertion and advancement of the endotrache

Topical and Systemic Retinoids in the Management of Hidradenitis Suppurativa: A Comprehensive Literature Review.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a debilitating chronic skin disorder characterized by painful inflammatory nodules, abscesses and sinus tracts involving intertriginous areas and has an adverse impact on patient quality of life. Over the past decade, the therapeutic options of HS have increased significantly to comprise multiple modalities, including topical medication, systemic therapies (mainly antibiotics, retinoids, and biologics), surgical approaches, and lifestyle modifications. Biologics alone or in combination with surgery remain the treatment of choice for moderate to severe disease.
