Pathological fracture induced by Halicephalobus gingivalis (Nematoda: Rhabditida) in a horse limb.

Halicephalobus gingivalis is a free-living nematode that occasionally causes infections in horses. We report a rare case of limb fracture of horse caused by infection with H. gingivalis. An 8-year-old mare was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Lavras with claudication grade 5 of the right hind limb, that had been started 3 months ago. The patient had aseptic arthritis in the tarsal joint and edema that extended to the quartile. The radiographic examination showed punctate osteolysis with exacerbation of bone trabeculation along the calcaneus, talus, proximal epip

Study of Steinernema hermaphroditum (Nematoda, Rhabditida), from the West Uttar Pradesh, India.

INTRODUCTION: The entomopathogenic nematodes have been reported from all continents (except Antarctica) and almost all regions of the world. Surveys of EPNs in India has resulted in the recovery of several isolates of Steinernema. Among one of them, isolate CS34 was identified as S. hermaphroditum Stock, Griffin & Chaerani, 2004. We investigated the identification and the pathogenicity of S. hermaphroditum in District Meerut of Western Uttar Pradesh, India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Steinernema was examined for its pathogenicity and accurate identification by the mean of morphological and mo

The genome sequence of the nematode Ostertagia ostertagi (Stiles, 1892) (Rhabditida, Trichostrongylidae).

We present a genome assembly from an individual nematode Ostertagia ostertagi (Rhabditida, Trichostrongylidae). The genome sequence has a total length of 407.17 megabases. Most of the assembly sequence (99.3%) was assigned to 6 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the X sex chromosome. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 14.49 kilobases.

Heterorhabditis noenieputensis n. sp. (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae), a new entomopathogenic nematode from South Africa.

A new entomopathogenic nematode in the genus Heterorhabditis is described from South Africa, from two singular isolates found 1000 km from each other, from beneath a fig tree and in a citrus orchard, respectively. Morphological and molecular studies indicate both isolates to be the same and a new undescribed Heterorhabditis species. Comparison of sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA and the D2D3 region of the 28S rDNA gene with available sequences of other described species within the genus, indicate the two isolates as a new species. Muscles of the male and female copulatory organs of Bursaphelenchus mucronatus and Chiloplacus sp. (Nematoda: Rhabditida).

Male and female copulatory organs figure prominently in nematode taxonomy, but the associated musculature remains insufficiently explored. The aim of this study was therefore to further our knowledge of the musculature of the vulva and male copulatory organs in nematodes by using phalloidin staining and confocal microscopy to examine two nematode species, Bursaphelenchus mucronatus and Chiloplacus sp. The musculature of the round vulva in Chiloplacus sp. comprises three pairs of radial vulval dilators and another pair of dilators of the anterior inner vulval plate. This arrangement is similar

Physiological alterations in Pseudosuccinea columella (Mollusca: Gastropoda) after infection by Heterorhabditis baujardi LPP7 (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae).

The snail Pseudosuccinea columella participates in the distribution of Fasciola hepatica in the environment by acting as its intermediate host. Therefore, the control of this lymnaeid is one of the ways to prevent hepatic fascioliasis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility of P. columella to infective juveniles (IJs) of the entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) Heterorhabditis baujardi in laboratory conditions, as well as to investigate aspects related to the biochemistry and histopathology of snails exposed or not to the EPNs during three weeks.
