Malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT) most commonly occurs in kidney. In the central nervous system, cerebellum is the most common site of occurrence. CNS rhabdoid tumors typically occur in small children, do not respond favorably to treatment and are usually fatal within 1-year. Here is reported a 4-year-old child who presented with features of raised intracranial pressure. Apart from papillodema, there were no neurological signs. Imaging revealed a left lateral ventricular heterogeneous mass abutting the foramen of monro, with mild irregular contrast enhancement and hydrocephalus. The child underwe

Rhabdoid tumors (RT), or malignant rhabdoid tumors, are among the most aggressive and lethal forms of human cancer. They can arise in any location in the body but are most commonly observed in the brain, where they are called atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RT), and in the kidneys, where they are called rhabdoid tumors of the kidney. The vast majority of rhabdoid tumors present with a loss of function in the SMARCB1 gene, also known as INI1, BAF47, and hSNF5, a core member of the SWI/SNF chromatin-remodeling complex. Recently, mutations in a 2nd locus of the SWI/SNF complex, the SMARCA4

Rhabdoid tumors of the brain are rare with an invariable dismal prognosis despite treatment. This is the case of a 3 year old boy who presented lethargy, somnolence, nausea, vomiting, and headaches one week prior to hospitalization. A posterior fossa tumor with hydrocephalus was noted on a head computed tomography (CT) scan. A ventriculoperitoneal shunt was placed with subsequent gross total tumor resection. Pathology findings were those of a rhabdoid tumor. The histopathology, immunohistochemistry and ultrastructure of this unusual pediatric cerebral neoplasia is discussed.

Malignant rhabdoid tumor is an uncommon pediatric tumor that often arises from the kidneys but can also develop in other soft tissues including the orbits, where it is known as atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor. Orbital location is exceptional, with just a few reported cases. Imaging allows for an accurate diagnosis, but histological confirmation is required. The treatment is yet unclear but nearly often surgical, either with or without chemotherapy. In this report, we present a case of a neonate of 1-month-old with an orbital primary malignant rhabdoid tumor with synchronous cerebellar locatio

Introduction Malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT) is defined as a high-grade sarcoma derived from an uncertain cell of origin. Its diagnosis is associated with poor prognosis and patient's life expectancy is greatly reduced. Material and method Here, we describe a unique case of 9-month-old boy who presented with a large MRT arising from the soft tissue of the neck. Following intensive multimodal treatment, the patient benefited from a 25 years' remission until the discovery of multiple liver metastases. Conclusion MRT of soft tissue needs to be distinguished from other soft tissue neoplasms, as MRT

PURPOSE: The primary diagnosis of renal masses in children is made by imaging studies. This retrospective analysis describes the imaging features of rhabdoid tumors (RT) with US, CT and MRI, to point out characteristics and to evaluate the possibility of differentiation between RT and Wilms tumor.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed 10 MRI (6 STIR, 9 T1 w, 8 T2 w, 10 T1 post KM), 15 CT (9 Nativ-CT, 14 KM-CT) and 14 US images of 22 patients (age 2 - 57 months) with histopathologically confirmed RT. The following characteristics were evaluated: subcapsular fluid collection, multiple tumor lobule

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdoid tumours usually develop in brain and spinal cord or kidney; they are highly malignant neoplasms that typically arise in infancy and early childhood. However, rare cases of pulmonary localization have been described, particularly among young adults.
CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old man, smoker, had a right apical lung mass associated with a Pancoast syndrome leading to haemoptysis. There was also a tumour of the left thigh and scalp. Histological samples taken at these three locations were in favour of an undifferentiated carcinoma. The lack of nuclear integrase interactor 1 e

Malignant rhabdoid tumor is a rare and malignant tumor of childhood. Generally it originates from the kidney and central nervous system, but occasionally it may arise from the orbit. Differential diagnosis from other childhood soft tissue sarcomas should be done. We report here an 8-week-old female infant with malignant rhabdoid tumor of the orbit who was treated with chemotherapy and surgery. The 8 week-old girl was referred to our hospital with a history of right proptosis first noted at birth. Physical and laboratory evaluation of the patient was normal except for right proptosis. The mass

A 36-month-old girl had a 3-week history of proptosis of the right eye. Computed tomography showed an ill-defined homogeneous mass filling the intraconal space. Histopathologic examination and immunohistochemistry findings of an incisional biopsy specimen were consistent with malignant undifferentiated tumor with rhabdoid features. Despite chemotherapy (a combination of vincristine sulfate and dactinomycin) and radiotherapy, massive orbital recurrence occurred 6 months later and orbital exenteration was performed. The recurrent tumor was composed entirely of pleomorphic epithelial cells with p

Severe hypercalcemia occurred in a child with metastatic disease from a rhabdoid tumor of the kidney. Because there was no evidence of skeletal involvement by tumor, an investigation of the cause for hypercalcemia was undertaken. A greatly elevated serum concentration of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (iPTH) was documented. This together with the observation of histologically normal parathyroid glands and the immunohistologic demonstration of parathyroid hormone within tumor cells supports the hypothesis of ectopic iPTH production by the tumor. The concurrence of an unusual metabolic compl

BACKGROUND: Extracranial malignant rhabdoid tumors (eMRT) are rare, highly aggressive pediatric neoplasms. While the liver is a relatively common anatomic site of presentation, the clinical course of patients with hepatic eMRT (eMRT-L) is not well described.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 30 children affected by eMRT-L treated on a consensus regimen provided by the European Rhabdoid Registry (EU-RHAB). Clinical characteristics, radiology features according to the Pre-Treatment Extent of Tumor (PRETEXT) system, treatment details, and outcome were assessed. We employed patients with rhabd

BACKGROUND: Malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRT) are rare but aggressive tumors presenting in the pediatric population. First thought a variant of Wilms' tumor in the kidney, it is recognized as presenting at renal, central nervous system and other extra-renal primary sites. It is uniformly of very poor prognosis, however.
CASE REPORT AND DISCUSSION: We present a case of congenital MRT of the scalp, which we believe to be the first described at this site. The clinical and histopathological features of the tumor are discussed in light of the current literature on MRT at other sites. The bleak progn

Malignant rhabdoid tumor has been a somewhat controversial entity since it was first described in 1978 as a possible sarcomatous variant of Wilms tumor. Eventually, however, it was found to be a distinct neoplastic tumor with histologic characteristics similar to those of rhabdomyosarcoma. Malignant rhabdoid tumors affect children. Clinically, they occur primarily in the kidney, and they behave aggressively. Associated mortality is significant, even with combined-modality treatment regimens. We describe the case of a large extrarenal malignant rhabdoid tumor of the parapharyngeal space with ex

Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor of the central nervous system is a highly malignant neoplasm in infants and young children. We report a 6 year-old girl with atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor. Based on cerebrospinal fluid examination MRI scan and family history of tuberculosis; we diagnosed tuberculous meningitis. There was inadequate response to the antituberculosis therapy; so we performed stereotactic brain biopsy. Pathologic result revealed high grade atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor.

The clinicopathological features of atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor, a new entity among malignant pediatric brain tumors, and the differential diagnosis from primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET)/medulloblastoma, and germ cell tumor are described. Histologically, atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor is defined as a polymorphous neoplasm often featuring rhabdoid, PNET, epithelial, and mesenchymal components. Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors usually include PNET components and occur mainly in the posterior fossa, so mimic medulloblastoma. Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor is characterized by the c

Rhabdoid tumors of the central nervous system are uncommon, aggressive childhood malignancies. The 13 described adult cases comprise both primary CNS tumors and malignant transformation of previously existing gliomas, meningiomas, and astrocytomas. Central nervous system rhabdoid lesions of adults have been diagnosed as primary malignant rhabdoid tumors, atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors, and more recently, rhabdoid glioblastomas. We report a case of a 20-year-old woman in her 30th week of pregnancy who presented with headache, nausea and blurry vision. MRI revealed a large rim-enhancing mass

BACKGROUND: Rhabdoid tumors are malignant neoplasms of low prevalence, aggressive behavior, and high mortality. They were initially described as renal tumors, although tumors with the same histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics have been discovered in other locations, mainly in the central nervous system. Few cases of mediastinal location have been reported internationally. This work aimed to describe the case of a mediastinal rhabdoid tumor.
CASE REPORT: We describe the case of an 8-month-old male patient admitted to the pediatric department with dysphonia and laryngeal st

We report the case of a 22-year-old patient with acute abdominopelvic pain. The diagnosis of hypercalcemic small cell carcinoma (SCCOHT)/ovarian rhabdoid tumor has been made. Small cell carcinoma of hypercalcemic type is a rare and aggressive tumor that occurs in young women. The diagnosis of this tumor and the management must be rapid in view of its aggressiveness. Through this observation, we specify the epidemiological, diagnostic, molecular aspects and discussions about its name.
