Interferon (IFN) treatment induces the expression of hundreds of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs). However, only a selection of their products have been demonstrated to be responsible for the inhibition of rhabdovirus replication in cultured cells; and only a few have been shown to play a role in mediating the antiviral response in vivo using gene knockout mouse models. IFNs inhibit rhabdovirus replication at different stages via the induction of a variety of ISGs. This review will discuss how individual ISG products confer resistance to rhabdoviruses by blocking viral entry, degrading single stran

The Rhabdoviridae family comprises negative-sense single-stranded RNA viruses that cause severe infections in a wide range of hosts. Increasing evidence indicates that host noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), including microRNAs (miRNAs), long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs), play central roles in regulating rhabdovirus replication, pathogenesis, and host immune responses. These ncRNAs exert both antiviral and proviral effects through modulation of innate immune signaling pathways, regulation of gene expression, and control of inflammatory responses. Antiviral ncRNAs suppress viral

The family Rhabdoviridae has a non-segmented single stranded negative-sense RNA and its genome ranges in size from approximately 11 kb to almost 16 kb. It is one of the most ecologically diverse families of RNA viruses with members infecting a wide range of organisms. The five structural protein genes are arranged in the same linear order (3'-N-P-M-G-L-5') and may be interspersed with one more additional accessory gene. For many years, a full of knowledge of the rhabdoviridae has been established on extensive studies of two kinds of prototype viruses; vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and rabie

RNA viruses of the family Rhabdoviridae include arthropod-borne agents that infect plants, fish and mammals, and also include a variety of non-vector-borne mammalian viruses. Herein is presented a molecular phylogenetic analysis, the largest undertaken to date, of 56 rhabdoviruses, including 20 viruses which are currently unassigned or assigned as tentative species within the Rhabdoviridae. Degenerate primers targeting a region of block III of the L polymerase gene were defined and used for RT-PCR amplification and sequencing. A maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis of a 158-residue L polym

The family Rhabdoviridae contains diverse viruses, including vector-borne and nonvector-borne viruses, some that are human pathogens, including rabies virus and also nonpathogenic viruses. Bats, which are a known reservoir of viruses with zoonotic potential including coronaviruses, also carry multiple rhabdoviruses such as but not limited to lyssaviruses. We collected samples from 193 insectivorous and frugivorous bats in the Republic of the Congo and tested them for rhabdovirus RNA. Four samples were found positive for viral RNA representing sequences of four different, not previously describ

Bats carry zoonotic viruses which can be harmful to humans. Zoonotic diseases have caused huge economic losses in the production and trade of animal products and recurring diseases outbreaks and global pandemics. Studies have shown that Rabies and rabies related viruses (Lyssavirus genera, family Rhabdoviridae) are spread to humans by bats. The aim of this article is to assess the global distribution of bat Rhabdoviruses, detection and challenges in Africa. Studies have shown that the prevalence of Rhabdoviruses is high in Africa and Asia. In addition to Rabies virus, other bat Rhabdoviruses w

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the possible transmission of spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV) between common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) through cohabitating infected fish of one species with healthy fish of the counter species. The ability of infected O. niloticus to transmit the infection to nearby C. carpio for an extended period was also evaluated. The cohabitation ratio was one SVCV-challenged fish of one species to three healthy fish of the other species. Epithelioma Papulosum Cyprini cell line was utilised for virus isolation,

A new virus known as snakehead rhabdovirus (SHRV-In) was discovered in South India in striped snakehead (Channa striata) that had hemorrhagic patches and cutaneous ulcerations. The virus is the most potentially harmful pathogen of snakehead because it could cause 100% mortality within 5 days. The goal of the current investigation was to evaluate the infectivity of rhabdovirus in freshwater fishes and to analyze the immune response in snakehead fish after challenge with SHRV-In. The infectivity study of SHRV-In against three freshwater fish such as tilapia, grass carp and loach showed that the

Rabies has been a scourge of mankind since antiquity. The name itself, ?rabies? is derived from the ancient Sanskrit rabhas meaning ?to do violence? and has been found described in medical writings several thousand years old. The rabies virus is an RNA virus of the family Rhabdoviridae (Greek for ?rod-shaped virus?), genus Lyssavirus (Lyssa being the Greek God of frenzy and rage). Rabies infections have a worldwide spread, with only a few, mostly island nations laying claim to being ?rabies free.?

INTRODUCTION: Spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) is a highly infectious pathogen threatening common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Hence, implementing protective measures is crucial to safeguard aquatic species and minimize economic impacts, including pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and breeding of resistant varieties. Common carp is a major aquaculture species, with breeding programs primarily focused on enhancing growth performance. However, evidence indicates that accelerated growth may compromise disease resistance, suggesting a trade-off between these traits.
METHODS: We challenged two carp populat

The accurate assembly of the ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex is fundamental for the replication and transcription of rhabdoviruses, which are known for their broad pathogenic impact. A novel 119-amino-acid protein, NLRP12-119aa is identified, encoded by the circular RNA circNLRP12, that effectively disrupts the formation of rhabdovirus RNP complexes through two distinct mechanisms and significantly reduces their replication. NLRP12-119aa exhibits a strong affinity for the conserved 18-nucleotide sequence at the start of the leader RNA of rhabdoviruses VSV, SCRV, and RABV, outcompeting their na

In order to develop live vaccine against Siniperca chuatsi rhabdovirus (SCRV) disease, an avirulent virus strain, designed as Micropterus salmoides rhabdovirus Sanshui (MSRV-SS), was selected from six fish rhabdovirus isolates (SCRV-QY、SCRV-SS、SCRV-GM、CMRV-FS、OMBRV-JM、MSRV-SS) by fish challenge assay. When Chinese perch (Siniperca chuatsi) were intraperitoneally injected live virus strain MSRV-SS, they were completely protected from virulent SCRV-GM challenge with a relative percent survival (RPS) of 100% on 18th day post vaccination. Then, the wild type MSRV-SS was purified by plaque clone as

Insects are associated with diverse RNA viruses, including vertically transmitted viruses that form persistent infections without apparent symptoms. One of the first documented vertically transmitted viruses is a sigmavirus (Rhabdoviridae) affecting fitness of Drosophila. Sigmaviruses and related rhabdoviruses have also been detected in pest fruit flies and other arthropods. However, their prevalence, transmission, tissue localisation and fitness effects remain poorly known, despite their potentially common infections in diverse hosts. We investigated Sigmavirus tryoni (BtSV) prevalence, load,

A previously undescribed group of related plant viruses has recently been identified within the Benyviridae family. This group is called reclovirids, named after the type species, red clover RNA virus 1 (RCRV1). The single genomic RNA of most reclovirids contains two main open reading frames (ORFs): a large, well-conserved 5′-proximal ORF1 that encodes a viral replicase and a less conserved 5′-distal ORF2 that encodes a polypeptide of unknown function with a C4-type zinc finger motif. In this study, the ORF2 proteins of RCRV1 and a Gymnadenia rhellicani virus, another reclovirid, are found to

We sequenced a novel rhabdovirus, Tupavirus delphini (dolphin tupavirus), from the brain of a stranded dead Atlantic white-sided dolphin with severe encephalitis in Canada. In situ hybridization linked presence of the virus to the animal's brain pathology and death. Our findings underscore the importance of monitoring marine mammals for unexpected pathogens.

Spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) is a notifiable pathogen of the World Organization of Animal Health. Since SVCV was isolated in Lake Ontario in 2007, concern has grown about its spread in the Great Lakes basin and its potential negative impacts on fish species of importance in stock enhancement programs basinwide. The susceptibility of representative fish species from the families Cyprinidae (Fathead Minnow Pimephales promelas, Golden Shiner Notemigonus crysoleucas, Spotfin Shiner Cyprinella spiloptera, and Creek Chub Semotilus atromaculatus), Centrarchidae (Largemouth Bass Micropterus sal

Bats are natural reservoir hosts of highly virulent pathogens such as Marburg virus, Nipah virus, and SARS coronavirus. However, little is known about the role of bat ectoparasites in transmitting and maintaining such viruses. The intricate relationship between bats and their ectoparasites suggests that ectoparasites might serve as viral vectors, but evidence to date is scant. Bat flies, in particular, are highly specialized obligate hematophagous ectoparasites that incidentally bite humans. Using next-generation sequencing, we discovered a novel ledantevirus (mononegaviral family Rhabdovirida

Lyssaviruses are the etiological agents of rabies, one of the oldest viral diseases known to man and a disease that has persisted over many centuries. Together with sound diagnostic methods and efficacious vaccines--both of which had been available for many decades, an understanding of the epidemiology of the disease have enabled its control and even elimination in some specific reservoir species in North America and Western Europe. However, worldwide rabies still radiates into new host species and geographical domains and has become vastly underestimated throughout the developing world throug

Grass carp reovirus (GCRV) and spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) cause high mortality in black carp. We have previously bred a gynogenetic black carp strain with enhanced antiviral resistance. To investigate the underlying mechanisms, we established and characterized one fin cell line (bcF) from black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus) and two fin cell lines (gbc-1F, gbc-2F) from gynogenetic black carp. All three cell lines exhibited a uniform fibroblast-like morphology. The homology among these three cell lines was determined by 18S rDNA sequencing, and most cells of the three lines maintained a
