Phytochemicals from the Bark of Rhamnus caroliniana.

Rhamnus caroliniana (Rhamnaceae), or Carolina buckthorn, is a plant commonly found in the southeastern United States that was used in Cherokee traditional medicine. To date, there have been no reports on the phytochemical constituents of R. caroliniana. The bark of R. caroliniana was collected and extracted with chloroform. The crude chloroform extract was subjected to preparative column chromatography on silica gel leading to the isolation of two anthraquinones (chrysophanol and physcion), the bianthrone ararobinol, the dihydroxynaphthalene torachrysone, and the fatty alcohol 1-docosanol. Rhamnus cathartica (buckthorn) hepatocellular toxicity in mice.

The toxicity of the plant Rhamnus cathartica was assessed in mice after the plant was identified as a potential cause of an idiopathic neurologic disease in horses. Another member of the Rhamnaceae family, Karwinskia humboldtiana, is neurotoxic to mammals and birds and can induce hepatic degeneration and necrosis. To investigate the toxicity of R. cathartica, a 34-day feeding trial in mice was conducted using a complete rodent diet with 0, 5, or 25% added R. cathartica. No clinical signs or gross lesions were seen, and all major tissues were histologically normal except the liver. The livers o

Antiulcerogenic and anti-inflammatory effects of emodin, isolated from Rhamnus triquerta wall.

Emodin, an anthraquinone derivative, isolated from the whole plant of R. triquerta, in 15 mg/kg dose (ip) exhibited anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenin-induced pedal inflammation in rats. In the same dosage it also showed antiulcer activity against 4 hr pylorus-ligated, aspirin and immobilization stress-induced gastric ulcers in rats. It decreased acid and pepsin output and augmented mucus secretion in terms of total carbohydrate: protein ratio in the gastric juice of aspirin treated pylorus-ligated rats, indicating that the antiulcerogenic effect of emodin may be due to its effect

Polyphenolic extracts from the xerophyte Rhamnus lycioides as a radiation biodosimeter.

The majority of dosimeters currently in use are synthetic and very expensive. Therefore, the study of the dosimetric characteristics of polyphenolic extracts of xerophytes is useful because drought stress causes an increase in the production of these cheap and natural compounds containing benzene rings. Here, the polyphenolic compounds were extracted from Rhamnus lycioides which was collected from Bou-Hedma National Park in Tunisia and identified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). We investigated the impact of cobalt-60 (60Co) irradiation (0-30 kilogray (kGy)) on the color

Phytotoxicity and cytogenotoxic effects of extracts from the medicinal bark of Rhamnus purshiana DC. (Rhamnaceae).

Natural products, although frequently associated with beneficial effects and considered harmless, still require thorough analysis; therefore, their bioactive compounds need to be used with caution. Biological assays using plant models represent an appropriate alternative for evaluating the cytogenotoxicity associated with these products. In this study, the phyto- cytotoxic potential of extracts from the bark of Rhamnus purshiana DC. a species widely used for treatment of constipation was investigated due to its anthraquinone content. To this end, seeds of Lactuca sativa L. were employed in phy

Rhamnus prinoides (gesho) stem extract prevents co-culture biofilm formation by Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans.

Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans exhibit a symbiotic relationship to form polymicrobial biofilms that exacerbate oral infections including early-childhood caries, periodontitis and candidiasis. Rhamnus prinoides (gesho) has traditionally been used for the treatment of a variety of illnesses and was recently found to inhibit Gram-positive bacterial biofilm formation. We hypothesized that Rhamnus prinoides extracts have anti-biofilm activity against S. mutans and C. albicans mono- and dual-species biofilms. Ethanol extracts were prepared from gesho stems and leaves; then anti-biofilm ac

Frangulin B, an antagonist of collagen-induced platelet aggregation and adhesion, isolated from Rhamnus formosana.

Emodin and its glycoside frangulin B were isolated from the plant Rhamnus formosana. Emodin inhibited the aggregation of rabbit platelets induced by arachidonic acid and collagen, without affecting that by ADP or PAF, while emodin acetate had no any antiplatelet effect. Frangulin B inhibited selectively and concentration-dependently collagen-induced aggregation and ATP release in rabbit platelets, without affecting those induced by arachidonic acid, ADP, PAF and thrombin. Frangulin B also inhibited the platelet aggregation induced by trimucytin which was reported to be a collagen receptor agon
