Sputum handling for rheology.

The rheology of sputum is viewed as a powerful emerging biophysical marker for monitoring muco-obstructive pulmonary diseases such as cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF bronchiectasis (NCFB). However, there is no unified practice to process sputa from collection to analysis, which can lead to highly variable, and sometimes inconsistent results. The main objective of this study is to bring light into the handling of sputum samples to establish a standardised and robust protocol before rheological measurements. Sputum collected from 22 CF and 10 NCFB adults, was divided into control (vortexed and f

Understanding the rheology of nanocontacts.

Mechanical stiffness, as opposed to softness, is a fundamental property of solids. Its persistence or rheological evolution in vibrating solid-solid nanocontacts is important in physics, materials science and technology. A puzzling apparent liquefaction under oscillatory strain, totally unexpected at room temperature, was suggested by recent experiments on solid gold nano-junctions. Here we show theoretically that realistically simulated nanocontacts actually remain crystalline even under large oscillatory strains. Tensile and compressive slips, respectively of "necking" and "bellying" types,

Blood Rheology and Hemodynamics.

Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis (STH) celebrates 50 years of publishing in 2024. To celebrate this landmark event, STH is republishing some archival material. This article represents the most highly cited paper ever published in STH. The original abstract follows.Blood is a two-phase suspension of formed elements (i.e., red blood cells [RBCs], white blood cells [WBCs], platelets) suspended in an aqueous solution of organic molecules, proteins, and salts called plasma. The apparent viscosity of blood depends on the existing shear forces (i.e., blood behaves as a non-Newtonian fluid) and i

[Rheology and gravidic hypertension].

Gestational hypertension is the development of hypertension and proteinuria after the 20th week of gestation. The most common causes of increased peripheral resistance are the vasoconstriction and hemoconcentration with plasma volume contraction. Additional rheological parameters are an elevated red blood cell aggregation and impaired erythrocyte deformability. Preeclamptic patients showed a significantly low cardiac output and central venous pressure than normal pregnant women. It has already been shown by the studies by Hytten and Paintin (1963) and also by the subsequent studies by Garn et

[Rheology and coronary heart disease].

More than 25 years ago it was demonstrated that an improvement in various parameters of blood flow in patients who have an hyperviscosity syndrome improves coronary blood flow. Hyperfibrinogenemia with resulting increase in plasma viscosity and erythrocyte aggregation has been demonstrated in patients with coronary heart disease. Poiseuille's law, which describes the interaction between vascular resistance, vessel geometry and blood viscosity, indicates--when applied to coronary artery disease--that an increase in the viscosity of blood, especially of plasma, can in the poststenotic microcircu

Rheology of model aerosol suspensions.

The rheological properties of model aerosol suspensions at phase fractions of less than 5% w/v (phase ratio of 0.05) were investigated. The rheological profiles of lactose in chloroform, lactose in trichlorofluoromethane (Propellent 11, P11), and salbutamol sulphate in P11 have been investigated in the presence and absence of lecithin, a phospholipid surface-active agent. The relative viscosities of these disperse systems correlated with the increasing disperse phase fractions and the addition of surfactant was found to reduce these viscosities to a relative viscosity of approximately 1.0. Blood rheology in lupus erythematosus.

Blood rheology is one of the determinants of perfusion and might therefore have an impact on the thromboembolic complications of lupus erythematosus. This study aimed at defining the flow properties of blood in patients with various types of lupus erythematosus. Results for 51 patients were compared with those for 20 controls matched for sex. The patients were divided into subgroups--chronic discoid, subacute cutaneous, and systemic lupus erythematosus--according to their clinical or laboratory characteristics. Blood and plasma viscosity, packed cell volume, red cell aggregation, and red cell

Effects of opiates on blood rheology.

To evaluate the possible effect of opiates on blood rheology, the plasma fibrinogen, prothrombin time and leukocyte aggregation were measured in 75 heroin addicts categorized by the time of abstention from heroin and the administration of naltrexone (25 active heroin abusers, 25 abstaining for 1 week, 11 abstaining for at least 5 months and 14 abstaining for 1 month and taking naltrexone during this period). No difference was detected in prothrombin time, but the leukocyte aggregation and fibrinogen were significantly different among the four groups (p = 0.028 and p = 0.0001, respectively). In

Rheology of the sickle cell disorders.

The sickling process causes secondary changes in cell shape, size, cation and water content, and membrane structure that contribute to the impairment of intrinsic cell deformability (Figure 2). This rheological defect is partially compensated by a low haematocrit, which moderates the rise in whole-blood viscosity, and by a rise in cardiac output which increases capillary flow velocity (Berger and King, 1982). A delicate balance exists between these mechanisms and any local disturbance of this balance by pathological changes in factors extrinsic to the sickle cell (Figure 2) can precipitate vas

Rheology of saliva in health and disease.

BACKGROUND: Saliva is a complex fluid that lubricates the oropharynx and facilitates chewing, swallowing, and vocalization. Viscoelasticity is critical for the ability of saliva to fulfill these functions. Xerostomia, or a sensation of dry mouth, occurs in 17-26% of the population. Although many equate xerostomia with hyposalivation, high-risk patients frequently report oral dryness in the absence of decreased salivary flow. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine if xerostomia is associated with alterations in the rheological properties of saliva in addition to decreased salivary production.

Effects of perfluorocarbon emulsion in rheology.

AIM: To study effects of a perfluorocarbon emulsion on plasma and whole human blood viscosity in the presence of albumin or modified fluid gelatin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We investigated the effects of several PFC concentrations on plasma and whole blood viscosity in the presence of human albumin solution (HAS) or modified fluid gelatine (MFG; Gelofusine) to obtain three PFC emulsion concentrations (4, 8 and 15 g/dL). Three hematocrit levels (Hct) were investigated: 30, 20 and 13%, corresponding to different clinical situations. Plasma and whole blood viscosity was measured at 37 degrees C, us

Blood rheology in the newborn infant.

The blood in neonates shows several peculiar properties which affect its rheological properties. 1. The haematocrit in neonates may be as high as 0.65 l/l without any clinical signs. 2. Both plasma viscosity and red cell aggregation are markedly lower in neonates than in adults because of low protein levels in neonates. This results in decreased blood viscosity at given haematocrit, particularly at low shear forces. 3. Deformability of neonatal red cells is similar to that of adult cells when studied under controlled conditions (e.g. rheoscope, ektacytometer). However, neonatal red cells are l

Rheology: liquefaction of quicksand under stress.

People or animals caught in quicksand find it very hard to escape. Here we show that quicksand acts as a trap because it becomes unstable when it is forced to move--first it liquefies, and then it collapses. But a simple sinking test demonstrates that it is impossible for a human to be drawn into quicksand altogether.

Red blood cell rheology in sepsis.

Changes in red blood cell (RBC) function can contribute to alterations in microcirculatory blood flow and cellular dysoxia in sepsis. Decreases in RBC and neutrophil deformability impair the passage of these cells through the microcirculation. While the role of leukocytes has been the focus of many studies in sepsis, the role of erythrocyte rheological alterations in this syndrome has only recently been investigated. RBC rheology can be influenced by many factors, including alterations in intracellular calcium and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentrations, the effects of nitric oxide, a decr

Rheology of rat basophilic leukemia cells.

Rat basophilic leukemia (RBL) cells, decorated with IgE, have been shown to bind irreversibly to antigen-coated substrates. In this paper we measured RBL cell deformability and demonstrated that this irreversible binding is not due to a compliant cellular rheology of these cells. The rheological properties of RBL cells were assessed with single-cell micropipette aspiration. Small-sized (G1/G0 phase) cells were found to be more deformable than medium-sized (S phase) cells. No changes in cellular rheology were observed after binding of anti-dinitrophenol IgE to Fce receptors. Furthermore, cytopl

Correlating surface rheology with bulk rheology in foams stabilized by hemp proteins and hemp protein-pectin complexes.

HYPOTHESIS: Foams are dispersions of gas in a liquid, consisting of multiple closely packed air bubbles. The bulk elasticity of foams is positively correlated with surface elasticity and can be tuned by controlling surface mechanical properties. EXPERIMENTS: We studied surface rheology of air-water interfaces stabilized by hemp proteins and their complexes with pectin using small and large amplitude oscillatory shear or dilatation (i.e., SAOS/LAOS and SAOD/LAOD). These stabilizers produce air-water interfaces with a wide range of interfacial stiffness. Bulk rheology of foams formed with these

Structure and Rheology of DPPC-Cholesterol Monolayers.

Lipids are key components of biological interfaces and are constantly subjected to external stress and shear flow. In this work, we focus on DPPC-cholesterol monolayers at water-air interfaces and study their response to compression and shear. The choice of lipids is motivated by their crucial role in regulating the surface activity and mechanical properties of pulmonary surfactants at the interface of alveoli. Using a Langmuir-Blodgett setup coupled to an interfacial shear rheometer and a fluorescence microscope, we observe that pure DPPC monolayers exhibit a first-order phase transition (liq

[Rheology and occlusive arterial disease of the legs].

Peripheral occlusive arterial disease (P.O.A.D.) is one of the situations in which hemorheological abnormalities are usually described. However the clinical relevance of hemorheological measurements in angiologic practice remains to be defined. The aim of the study was to investigate whether hemorheological disturbances are associated with alterations in oxygen diffusion and prognosis of the arterial disease. Three groups of patients were included in this work. First, a study was realized on 160 nondiabetic P.O.A.D patients (suffering from intermittent claudication to critical limb ischemia) i

Blood rheology in general medicine and surgery.

Traditionally, blood rheology tests have been used in diagnosis and monitoring of infection, rheumatic diseases and malignancy, and are still of clinical value in these conditions. In the last twenty years, clinical and epidemiological studies have shown that the haematological determinants of blood flow resistance (haematocrit, fibrinogen, white cell count and altered red and white cell rigidity) are also associated with nutritional, metabolic, endocrine and vascular disorders. Decreased red cell deformability may contribute to reduced red cell survival and anaemia in burns, malaria, liver di
