Seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis is characterized by seasonal rhinorrhea, nasal congestion/stuffiness, nasal and ocular pruritus, and paroxysmal sneezing. Symptomatic relief and improved quality of life can be achieved in the majority of patients by using pharmacotherapy appropriately. Mild cases can be managed with either an oral antihistamine or a nasal corticosteroid alone. More severe cases may require a nasal corticosteroid in combination with various agents. Immunotherapy is reserved for a selected group of patients. While all other interventions provide symptomatic relief, specific immunother

Seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis is the most well understood of the types of allergic rhinitides. The disease is characterized by sneezing, itching, rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion upon exposure to pollen allergens in susceptible individuals. These symptoms can cause considerable misery in affected patients. Recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder as well as new insights into the pathophysiology of allergic rhinitis enable practitioners to provide more effective therapy.

Seasonal non-allergic rhinitis (SNAR)--a new disease entity? A clinical and immunological comparison between SNAR, seasonal allergic rhinitis and persistent non-allergic rhinitis.

We have earlier described a group of patients suffering from rhino-conjunctivitis during the early pollen season, but with negative allergological investigation. The present study aimed to evaluate this syndrome called Seasonal Non-Allergic Rhinitis (SNAR). Seventeen patients with SNAR were compared with 20 patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) and 13 patients with persistent non-allergic rhinitis (PNAR). They were analyzed with skin prick tests (SPT) and nasal provocation tests (NPT) with pollen extracts, and for IgE antibodies in serum and inflammation mediators in nasal lavage. Dai

TRPV1-mediated itch in seasonal allergic rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with allergic rhinitis may be abnormally sensitive to stimulation of the ion channel transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1). AIM OF THE STUDY: To examine effects of various TRP ion channel activators on sensory symptoms in allergic rhinitis prior to and during seasonal allergen exposure. METHODS: Nasal challenges were carried out with the TRPV1-activators capsaicin, anandamide and olvanil. Moreover, challenges were performed with mustard oil (allylisothiocyanate) and cinnamaldehyde as well as menthol, activators of TRPA1 and TRPM8, respectively. Nasal symptoms

Seasonal allergic rhinitis: limited effectiveness of treatments.

(1) Seasonal allergic rhinitis, otherwise known as hayfever, is a harmless condition, although it can cause major discomfort and interfere with activities of daily living. We conducted a review of the literature, based on our in-house methodology, to determine the risk-benefits of treatments used in this setting. (2) Placebo-controlled trials show that sodium cromoglicate relieves symptoms, especially if it is used before symptoms appear. Adverse effects are rare with sodium cromoglicate nasal solutions and eye drops. (3) Nasal steroids have well-documented efficacy. Beclometasone is the best

Pathophysiology and treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Therapeutic approaches to seasonal allergic rhinitis are reviewed in this paper. Pharmacotherapeutic approaches include nonsedative antihistamines, anti-allergic drugs, vasoconstrictors, anticholinergic agents and topical corticosteroids. The choice of treatment depends upon its relative efficacy and safety. Although effective, immunotherapy has been seriously questioned in recent years owing to the occurrence of possibly serious side-effects. Antihistamines are safe and effective for treatment of histamine-mediated symptoms of itching, sneezing and rhinorrhoea. The newer compounds do not caus

[Loratadine in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis].

A single blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study was performed during a pollen season in 41 patients suffering from seasonal allergic rhinitis. A group of 26 patients was treated with loratadine (10 mg daily in one dose) for 3 weeks. Placebo was given in the group of 15 patients (1 tablet daily) during 8-10 days. The following parameters were assessed: clinical symptoms (rhinorhea, sneezing, blockage, nasal itching, eye symptoms), rhinoscopy, at baseline and after 8 and 21 days of the treatment. Eosinophils in nasal secretion were countered before and after the medication. Patients rec

Stapokibart (CM310): A review in seasonal allergic rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: Stapokibart (CM310), a humanized anti-IL-4Rα monoclonal antibody, blocks IL-4/IL-13 signaling for type 2 inflammatory diseases like seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR), where standard of care often fails. OBJECTIVE: Assess stapokibart's efficacy on the primary endpoint (reflective Total Nasal Symptom Score, rTNSS) and safety as add-on therapy in SoC-inadequate moderate-to-severe SAR. METHODS: Data from a Phase II trial (MERAK, n = 92) and the pivotal Phase III PHECDA trial (n = 108; enriched for blood eosinophils ≥300 cells/μL) were reviewed. Patients received subcutaneous stapokiba

Prolonged treatment with acrivastine for seasonal allergic rhinitis.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled multicentre study, the antihistamine acrivastine, was used over prolonged periods for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis. After the initial treatment period of 10 days, 8 mg acrivastine three times daily was significantly superior to placebo in controlling the symptoms of sneezing, itchy nose, running nose, watery eyes, itchy eyes and itchy throat. The benefit from acrivastine was also apparent in the second (14 days) and third (28 days) treatment periods, although the difference no longer reached statistical significance. This was probably due to

Identifying the culprit allergen in seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) is the main form of rhinitis in children whereas in adults it accounts for about a third of cases of rhinitis. It is a risk factor for the development of asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis. The most common allergic triggers are grass and tree pollens, allergy to moulds and weeds is less common. Identifying the months of the year when an individual is symptomatic will help define the culprit allergen. If there is a clear recurring seasonal history the diagnosis may be made on the strength of the history. Skin prick tests are available in specialist clinics and ar

Seasonal increase of bronchial reactivity in allergic rhinitis.

Twenty-seven patients with hay fever had a carbachol inhalation challenge both out of season and during the pollen season. Eight patients with allergic asthma were used as a control group. Only three patients (11.1%) demonstrated a value of a provocative dose causing a 20% fall in FEV1 in the asthmatic range out of pollen season, but during pollen exposure, the number of positive responses significantly increased to 13 (48.1%). We observed differences regarding mean age, age of onset of symptoms, sex, and family history between patients with positive responses and patients who failed to react

Experience with monoclonal antibodies in allergic mediated disease: seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Current therapies for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis include allergen avoidance; pharmacologic interventions such as sympathomimetics, topical and systemic cortico-steroids, and chromones; and immunotherapy. In an attempt to create a novel therapy, therapeutic agents have been designed to inhibit IgE responses that are intimately involved in the induction of the allergic response. Omalizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody against IgE, represents a novel therapeutic intervention for seasonal allergic rhinitis. Complex formation of omalizumab with serum-free IgE reduces the amount

Evaluating stapokibart in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily mediated by type 2 immune responses, typically triggered by specific pollens. Stapokibart is a humanized monoclonal antibody anti-interleukin-4 receptor α subunit, thereby blocking IL-4 and IL-13 signaling pathways. Clinical studies of stapokibart in healthy adults and SAR patients revealed a favorable safety profile and significant clinical efficacy. Stapokibart has been approved for treating adults with atopic dermatitis, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis, and SAR in China. This article reviews the mecha
