Acoustic rhinometry in pre-school children.

Acoustic rhinometry was performed in 35 normal nose-breathing children between 3 and 6 years. The average cross-sectional areas at the nasal valve, at the anterior end of the turbinates, and in the nasopharynx were 0.34 +/- 0.06 cm2, 0.35 +/- 0.08 cm2 and 1.37 +/- 0.48 cm2 respectively. The average minimal cross-sectional area was 0.29 +/- 0.06 cm2. The minimal cross-sectional area was located at the nasal valve in 14 and at the anterior end of nasal turbinates in 21 of the 35 children. As would be expected, the cross-sectional areas at different sites of the nasal cavity increased with increa

Acoustic rhinometry: should we be using it?

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to examine the role of acoustic rhinometry in clinical practice. Although acoustic rhinometry was first described for clinical use in 1989, it is not in common use today. Should we be using it? Yes. I think we should be using it more often. This review provides an update of the new standard for interpretation and expanded clinical uses. RECENT FINDINGS: The most significant advances in the past year in this area have been the publication of standards for its clinical use. In addition, the repertoire of clinical problems that can be analyzed

[Effectiveness of tonsillectomy, evaluated by acoustic rhinometry].

Hypertrophy adenoid commonest cause of nasal obstruction in paediatrics. The morbility can be try alteration in the respiratory physiology, as well as in the face development and function of the middle ear. We used the acoustic rhinometry to evaluate the surgical results of the adenoidectomy in children with hypertrophy adenoid, compiling the data on their clinic, and correlating them as well with the rhinometric results. The acoustic rhinometry is a relatively new method of exploration of the nasal cavity. We obtain space measures that are going to allow to us to prove it. These measures are

Evaluation of rhinostereometry compared with acoustic rhinometry.

Measurement of the nasal mucosa is a challenging task. There are many different methods; each with advantages and disadvantages. In the last decade two new methods have been used extensively: acoustic rhinometry and rhinostereometry. Many studies with rhinostereometry have shown interesting results. However, there have been doubts about this method, since only a few investigators have used it, and it has never been compared with other methods. On the other hand, the acoustic rhinometer has been compared with many other methods. In this study, we compare the results of measurements with acousti

[Acoustic rhinometry: the bat principle of the nose].

All cross-sectional areas of the upper airway can be measured by an acoustic signal using the acoustic reflection technique, or acoustic rhinometry. The plane of the cross-sectional areas measured was determined in nasal models. The isotemporal layers were found to be nearly parallel to the nasal valve. The acoustically measured cross-sectional areas correlated with the cross-sectional areas of cuts from nasal models. After digitizing these cuts, a CAD software calculates cross-sectional areas in all orientations and at all distances. The difference between the measured and calculated cross-se

ACOUSTIC RHINOMETRY STUDY IN PATIENTS WITH ALLERGIC RHINITIS.

Acoustic rhinometry is a non-invasive technique that requires minimal cooperation from patients compared to other diagnostic methods. This technique can be used even in children under 3 years of age, which makes it widely applicable in the practice of rhinologists. The aim of this research was to study nasal patency and nasal volume in patients with persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR) and intermittent allergic rhinitis (IAR) using acoustic rhinometry and to compare the degree of swelling of the nasal mucosa in patients with different forms of the disease. The study was conducted on the territor

Acoustic rhinometry assessment of the nasal cycle in neonates.

In this study the nasal cycle in newborns was assessed using acoustic rhinometry with miniprobe (RHIN 2100). Enrolled in the study were 67 newborns aged 2 to 4 days. Each subject was assessed for 3 h, examinations taking place every 30 min. At least six measurements, three from each nostril, were taken at each examination. The miniprobe RHIN 2100 (SR Electronics ApS) was used for evaluation of nasal geometry. The minimal cross-sectional area (MCA) and the total volume of the anterior 45 mm (VOL45) were calculated and used for statistical analysis. The mean volume of MCA and VOL45 in the examin

Acoustic rhinometry in the evaluation of congenital choanal malformations.

Previous studies have shown that acoustic rhinometry (AR) is well suited to describe the nasal airway dimensions in healthy infants. The technique is quick to perform, non-invasive, without potential hazards and requires minimal cooperation. Due to the small dimensions of the infant nasal airways, the optimized miniprobe (Rhinometrics, Lynge, Denmark) provides abilities superior to those of adult probes. The equipment is portable and examinations can be performed in the maternity ward, out-patient department or at home. Measurements on models simulating the pre- and post-operative nasal geomet

Nasal Patency Measurement: State of the Art of Acoustic Rhinometry.

Nasal obstruction is one of the main symptoms of different nasal pathologies. Many physiological and pathological conditions can produce nasal airflow impairment causing nasal obstruction and affecting patients' quality of life. There are different methods for the measurement of nasal obstruction, but in clinical practice the most common used are acoustic rhinometry, rhinomanometry, and peak nasal inspiratory flow. This review describes the fundamentals of acoustic rhinometry, its normal values, the different physiological and pathological conditions that can modify nasal patency, and the util

Validity of acoustic rhinometry in the evaluation of patients with adenoid hypertrophy.

Reliability of acoustic rhinometry (AR) for preoperative diagnosis and decision of surgery in children with adenoid hypertrophy were investigated in this study. Fifty-five children who cannot tolerate nasal endoscopic examination were included. The AR was performed preoperatively and postoperatively 1 month later. The volume of distance between the 6th and 10th centimeters in rhinogram curve was calculated for evaluating the adenoid notch (AN) region. The volume of AN region was compared with each patient's volume of the adenoid tissue removed with adenoidectomy. Whereas the median adenoid spe

Acoustic rhinometry for the assessment of adenoid hypertrophy: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid hypertrophy is a common condition in children and a leading cause of upper airway obstruction, associated with sleep-disordered breathing, recurrent otitis media, and chronic rhinosinusitis. Although nasal endoscopy is the most widely used diagnostic tool, its invasiveness and limited correlation with functional obstruction in intermediate cases highlight the need for alternative methods. Acoustic rhinometry (AR) is a non-invasive technique that measures nasal and nasopharyngeal geometry and may overcome several limitations of conventional assessments. OBJECTIVE: To system

Prognostic Value of Acoustic Rhinometry and Rhinomanometry in Tympanoplasty Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic otitis media (COM) is a disorder characterized by perforation of the eardrum and hearing loss following chronic inflammation of the middle ear cavity, ossicules, and mastoid cells. Eustachian dysfunction plays an important role in COM etiopathogenesis and postoperative prognosis. The determinants of postoperative prognosis are still being researched. This study aimed to research the prognostic value of acoustic rhinometry (ARM) and rhinomanometry (RMM) in COM surgery in terms of eradication of the infection after operation, graft success, and hearing gain in operated cases.

Acoustic rhinometry in the evaluation of children with nasal or oral respiration.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there are any differences in the nasal geometry of children with nasal respiration or predominantly oral respiration (mouth breathing). The technique utilized was the acoustic reflection technique or acoustic rhinometry. Acoustic rhinometry is a non-invasive method, which can be easily applied to young children. Twenty children participated and both nostrils were evaluated. Statistically significant differences were found in the total nasal volumes between the two groups, with the mouth breathers presenting with reduced nasal volumes. No difference
