Tracheal rhinoscleroma.

INTRODUCTION: Tracheal rhinoscleroma is an infectious granulomatosis of the tracheobronchial tract caused by a Gram-negative bacillus. Exclusively tracheal involvement has been rarely reported in the literature. The purpose of this study was to report a case of subglottic stenosis secondary to rhinoscleroma. SUMMARY: A 46-year-old North African woman with no medical or surgical history presented with inspiratory dyspnoea that had been present for several years. Endoscopic examination under general anaesthesia revealed tracheal stenosis. Histological examination of mucosal biopsies demonstrate

Rhinoscleroma of the sinuses.

INTRODUCTION: Rhinoscleroma is a rare chronic, granulomatous disease of the respiratory tract. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to report 2 unusual cases of rhinoscleroma and to review the literature. MATERIAL: We present two cases of sinus rhinoscleroma diagnosed and treated at the ENT Department of a French University hospital. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Rhinoscleroma primarily affects the nasal cavity but the nasopharynx (18%-43%), larynx (15%-40%), trachea (12%) and bronchi (2% to 7%) can also be involved. However, the paranasal sinuses are usually free of disease. Rhinological signs a

Rhinoscleroma and rhinosporidiosis.

For North American otolaryngologists, rhinoscleroma and rhinosporidiosis are moving more into the differential diagnosis of chronic inflammatory diseases of the upper airway, particularly the nasal cavity. This change is occasioned by the influx of immigrants from parts of the world to which the diseases are endemic. Diagnosis is established by identification of the causal organisms, the readily seen Rhinosporidium seeberi for rhinosporidiosis and the more elusive Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis for rhinoscleroma.

Rhinoscleroma: An Unusual Presentation.

Rhinoscleroma is a chronic granulomatous disease caused by Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis. It commonly affects the nasal cavity and nasopharynx, but it can also involve the larynx, trachea, bronchi, middle ear, and orbit. We are reporting a rare presentation of rhinoscleroma in a middle-aged female patient involving the lips and gums.

[Rhinoscleroma. A case report].

Rhinoscleroma is a chronic, specific, inflammatory granulomatous condition of the nose and other structures of the upper respiratory tract. It is caused by the bacterium Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis. We report a case in a 29-year-old black male emigrant who consulted for a 2-year history of hoarseness, cough, and nasal discharge. The diagnosis was scleroma with nasal, laryngeal, tracheal, and bronchial involvement and ulcerating and necrotizing lesions that caused respiratory obstruction. Bacterial over-infection responded to treatment with third-generation cephalosporins and clindamycin. The s

Rhinoscleroma in three siblings.

Rhinoscleroma is a chronic, granulomatous infectious disease that responds poorly to treatment. In recent years an increasing number of cases have been reported in nonendemic areas, explained largely by major migratory movements. We describe rhinoscleroma in three siblings. They had ulcerated but painless lesions, which bled spontaneously, and hemorrhagic scabs or crusts in their noses. In one child, the lesions had destroyed the entire left nasal ala and alar cartilage and most of the right. Dermatopathologic study identified the Mikulicz macrophages that contained organisms. It is possible t

[Rhinoscleroma: a case report].

BACKGROUND: Rhinoscleroma is a rare infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract caused by Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis. The nasal mucosa represents the primary region of occurrence which is most likely a result of respiratory transmission. Without adequate++ treatment, the disease can potentially spread to the rest of the upper and middle respiratory tract within a period of several years. Healing often occurs with extensive scarring and adhesions of the nose, palate and larynx. A life threatening late stage manifestation includes subglottic stenosis requiring immediate surgical intervent

Association of rhinoscleroma with rhinosporidiosis.

Rhinoscleroma caused by the bacillus Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis and rhinosporidiosis caused by the fungus Rhinosporidium seebri are rare, specific nasal infections, both of which have a certain geographical distribution. To the best of our knowledge no association between them has been reported in the international literature. We have documented such an association in two male Indian patients aged-32 and 27 years, respectively-both presenting with unilateral blood-stained discharge and nasal blockage. They showed strawberry-like polypoidal masses, and histological examination confirmed the di

Laryngotracheal manifestations of rhinoscleroma.

Rhinoscleroma is a rare, chronic granulomatous disease of infective causation. It usually begins in the nose and may progress to involve the larynx and trachea and cause dysphonia, stridor, and airway obstruction. Early rhinoscleroma is usually successfully treated with oral tetracycline, yet laryngotracheal disease may require operative intervention. The disease is rare in the United States, but with an increase in immigration from endemic areas, otolaryngologists should be familiar with the management of this rare disease. Current literature contains only a few reports describing the manifes

Rhinoscleroma: eight Peruvian cases.

Rhinoscleroma is a rare infection in developed countries; although, it is reported with some frequency in poorer regions such as Central Africa, Central and South America, Eastern and Central Europe, Middle East, India and Indonesia. Nowadays, rhinoscleroma may be erroneously diagnosed as mucocutaneos leishmaniasis, leprosy, paracoccidioidomycosis, rhinosporidiasis, late syphilis, neoplasic diseases or other upper airway diseases. From 1996 to 2003, we diagnosed rhinoscleroma in eight patients attended in the Dermatologic and Transmitted Diseases service of "Cayetano Heredia" National Hospital

Rhinoscleroma mimicking nasal polyposis.

Rhinoscleroma is increasing in incidence in the United States. It should be considered in patients who are immigrants from endemic countries and present with nasal polyposis that exhibits significant adherence to the nasal septum and relative sparing of the sinuses. Fluoroquinolones are emerging as the adjunctive antibiotic treatment of choice to complement surgical extirpation of the disease.

Rhinoscleroma of the lower respiratory tract.

Rhinoscleroma is a chronic granulomatous disease of the respiratory tract endemic to Eastern Europe and Central America which is being recognized with increasing frequency in other countries, including the United States. It was initially described as a lesion of the nose and upper respiratory tract, but is now known to involve the larynx, trachea and bronchi as well to cause slowly progressive asphyxia. Eleven cases of rhinoscleroma with varying degrees of involvement of the lower respiratory tract (larynx, trachea and bronchi) are presented. Present day treatment is both medical, consisting p

[An etiological and pathologic study of Rhinoscleroma].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics and mechanism of tissue injury caused by Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis (KR) infection. METHODS: Thirty-three cases of rhinoscleromas in the nasal and pharyngeal region seen in this hospital from Jan. 1980 to Mar. 2000 were studied retrospectively. Warthin-Starry (W-S) stain was used to study all cases. Five cases were studied further with transmission electron microscope. RESULTS: W-S stain revealed a great number of KR in Mikulicz cells within the granuloma. Electron microscopy demonstrated a number of phagosomes in the cytoplasm

Radiological diagnosis of rhinoscleroma--the 'palatal sign'.

This paper reports a characteristic radiological finding observed in seven cases of rhinoscleroma with nasal involvement. The soft palate exhibits a marked thickening at its attachment to the hard palate which tapers off towards its free edge. This new sign could be of help in the early diagnosis of this condition.

Rhinoscleroma and chronic rhinosinusitis- an insidious presentation.

BACKGROUND: Rhinoscleroma is a chronic granulomatous infectious disease of the respiratory mucosa, endemic in some countries of Central America, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa, but rare in North America. METHODS: We report the case of a 35-year-old man who immigrated to Canada from El Salvador at 10 years of age who was diagnosed with rhinoscleroma 25 years after his immigration. RESULTS: He presented with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion for 14 years that did not respond to standard CRS treatment. His symptoms resolved with the administration of appropriat
