BACKGROUND: In South America, Babesia vogeli is the primary causative agent of canine babesiosis, and brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato) are the vectors. The recent separation of brown dog ticks into Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu stricto ("temperate lineage") and Rhipicephalus linnaei ("tropical lineage") raised suspicions of the possibility of two distinct Babesia genotypes or even species being transmitted by these tick species.
METHODS: To investigate this hypothesis, dog blood samples from Brazil (eight states), Paraguay, and Uruguay were collected to determine the gen

Chromoblastomycosis, caused primarily by Fonsecaea pedrosoi, is traditionally associated with traumatic environmental inoculation. We analyzed 50 Rhipicephalus sanguineus/R. microplus ticks from chromoblastomycosis-endemic Venezuelan states (Lara and Portuguesa) using Oxford Nanopore amplicon sequencing. Remarkably, F. pedrosoi dominated the tick eukaryotic microbiome, comprising 78% and 75% of fungal communities in Lara and Portuguesa, respectively. This unexpected high abundance across geographically distinct endemic foci suggests a previously unrecognized ecological association between tick

The BM86 antigen, originally identified in Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, is the basis of the only commercialized anti-tick vaccine. The long-term goal of our study is to improve BM86 based vaccines by induction of high levels of tick gut binding antibodies that are also cross-reactive with a range of BM86 homologues expressed in other important tick species. Here we have used a BD86 derived synthetic peptide, BD86-3, to raise a series of mouse monoclonal antibodies. One of these mAbs, named 12.1, recognized BM86 homologues in immuno-histochemical analyses in four out of five tick specie

Among hard ticks, Rhipicephalus species are of considerable veterinary and public health importance. Rhipicephalus linnaei, a member of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus species complex, and has been reported in tropical regions; however, it has not yet been reported in Pakistan. In this study, a comprehensive morph-molecular analysis was conducted to determine the occurrence of Rhipicephalus sp. in Pakistan. Hard ticks, particularly Rhipicephalus species, were collected from dogs, donkeys, wild boars and goats in 26 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The collected specimens were morphologi

Rhipicephalus ticks are vectors of disease in humans and animals. Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (the brown dog tick) is one of the most geographically widespread tick species worldwide, likely due to its ability to colonize human and canine dwellings over a range of habitats. They transmit a variety of diseases to dogs and humans, including canine babesiosis, canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, hepatozoonosis, Mediterranean spotted fever, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Tick bites manifest as intensely pruritic, erythematous papules at the site of tick attachment; symptomatic relief usually

Stemona plants have been traditionally used against various insects in Thailand and Southeast Asian countries. The acaricidal efficacy of 9 species of Stemona grown in Thailand was evaluated against dairy cattle tick, Rhipicephalus microplus using adult immersion test and in vivo evaluation on infested calves. From the ten Stemona root extracts used in this study, S. collinsiae of a concentration 250 mg/ml possessed the highest activity. In vivo study revealed that S. collinsiae extract could significantly reduce the attached ticks on calf skin compared to the control and promoted not signific

The problem of resistance to acaricides in ticks such as Rhipicephalus microplus and R. sanguineus has motivated the search for control alternatives, such as the use of extracts and secondary metabolites from plants. Plumbagin is a natural product present in plants such as Plumbago zeylanica L., Diospyros kaki, and D. anisandra, of which acaricidal activity has been reported. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate in vitro the acaricidal efficacy of plumbagin on larvae of R. microplus and R. sanguineus resistant to conventional acaricides. Larvae from engorged female ticks, col

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato and Rhipicephalus turanicus are very prevalent in Israel and are known to be vectors of human and animal diseases. The aim of this study was to identify the pathogens found in questing ticks and such parasitizing domestic and wild animals. Ticks were collected from 16 localities in Israel with the flagging technique and by examining dogs, hedgehogs, a badger and a tortoise. Bacterial and protozoal pathogens were analyzed by PCR and sequencing. Overall, 374 R. sanguineus s.l. specimens were collected, out of which 142 by flagging and 132 from six dogs. Ricket

The main agents for tick control are chemical acaricides. However, when used without technical guidance, they can lead to environmental damage and the development of resistant tick strains. In this context, vaccines are alternative o be used in integrated tick management format by combining with other effective tools. We isolated RNA from ticks Rhipicephalus microplus, prepared the library, and performed next-generation sequencing; a pipeline analysis was applied to identify the hypothetical proteins having immunogenic potential and their predicted immunogenic peptides. Circulation of a unique genetic type of Rickettsia rickettsii in ticks of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus complex was detected in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. The Mexican R. rickettsii differed from all isolates previously characterized from the endemic regions of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in northern, central, and southern Americas. Rhipicephalus ticks in Mexicali are genetically different from Rh. sanguineus found in the United States.

Infestations with cattle ticks, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and Rhipicephalus annulatus, economically impact cattle production in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Vaccines containing the recombinant R. microplus BM86 gut antigen were developed and commercialized to induce an immunological protection in cattle against tick infestations. These vaccines demonstrated that tick control by vaccination is cost-effective, reduces environmental contamination and prevents the selection of drug resistant ticks that result from repeated acaricide applications. The protection elicited

Cattle fever ticks, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and R. (B.) annulatus, are major constraints on cattle production worldwide because they directly reduce productivity and transmit the agents of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Despite their shared hosts and similar vector capacity, their environmental preferences and the extent to which they occupy comparable climatic space remain unclear. We compiled historical occurrence records from global sources and, after quality control and spatial thinning, retained 2338 records for R. (B.) microplus and 527 for R. (B.) annulatus. Using clima

Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species are tick-transmitted obligately intracellular bacteria that commonly cause disease in dogs worldwide. In addition to causing disease in canines, Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Ehrlichia ewingii, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum are responsible for emerging and life-threatening human zoonoses in the United States. We previously reported a high prevalence of E. canis infection in Cameroonian dogs based on serologic and molecular evidence. This study was undertaken to determine the Ehrlichia species (E. canis, E. chaffeensis, E. ewingii) present in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ti

Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Neum. occurs mainly in the eastern and southern parts of Africa and is the principal cause and vector of some very important stock diseases in these areas. The diseases include the theilerioses, brown tick toxicosis and Nairobi sheep disease. These are briefly discussed, and emphasis is laid on the role of R. appendiculatus in their epidemiology. R. appendiculatus is a 3-host tick particularly well adapted to survive where climate and vegetation are suitable. The basic requirements and breeding potential of this tick are also discussed.

Babesia ovis is a tick-borne protozoan parasite that poses a significant threat to sheep production, particularly in endemic regions such as Türkiye. It is known to be transmitted by ixodid ticks through both transstadial and transovarial routes. This study was aimed at investigating the natural transovarial transmission potential of B. ovis in Rhipicephalus bursa and Rhipicephalus turanicus ticks under field conditions. A total of 751 adult ticks were collected from 84 small ruminants (41 sheep and 43 goats) in Elazığ Province, Türkiye. Following species identification, 85 fully engorged fema

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus microplus is a hard tick that has a major impact on cattle health in tropical and subtropical regions because it feeds on cattle and is implicated in the transmission of pathogens that cause diseases such as bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis. Presently, acaricides are used to control tick infestation but this is becoming increasingly less effective due to the emergence of tick strains that are resistant to one or more classes of acaricides. Anti-tick vaccines are a promising alternative to control tick infestation in cattle. The life-cycle and host preference of R. m

Hepatozoon felis is a protozoan parasite reported in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas with infection rates ranging from 4 % to 30 % in domestic cats in Mediterranean countries. Although the parasite was described in 1908, its arthropod vector has not been reported to date. Ticks removed from cats were dissected to prepare hemocoel smears with the aim of identifying the sporogonic life stages of H. felis. Light and live video microscopy were used to visualize these stages and PCR followed by DNA sequencing served to verify the Hepatozoon sp. found and to morphologically and molecularly def

The most economically significant ectoparasites in the tropics and subtropics are ixodid ticks, especially Rhipicephalus annulatus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Years of extensive use of the readily available acaricides have resulted in widespread resistance development in these ticks, as well as negative environmental consequences. Benzyl alcohol (BA) has been frequently used to treat pediculosis and scabies, and it may be an effective alternative to commonly used acaricides. The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the acaricide activity of BA and its combination with the regularly

BACKGROUND: Human babesiosis is considered an emerging threat in China. Dozens of human infections with Babesia microti have been reported recently, especially in southern China. However, the transmission vectors of this parasite in these areas are not well understood. Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides, which is one of the dominant tick species in southern China, is a major vector of bovine babesiosis in China. However, whether this tick has the potential to transmit B. microti has not been tested. The present study experimentally investigated the transmission competence of B. microti through R.

The cattle fever ticks Rhipicephalus microplus (Canestrini, 1888) and Rhipicephalus annulatus (Say, 1821) transmit pathogens responsible for bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Although eradicated from the United States, these ticks and the pathogens they transmit are endemic in Mexico and other countries, and pose a serious risk to the U.S. cattle industry. Cattle imported into the U.S. are inspected and treated with an acaricide, coumaphos, to prevent tick reentry into the U.S. Coumaphos is an organophosphate (OP) that kills ticks by inactivating acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an enzyme vital
