Are Babesia vogeli genotypes associated with Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Rhipicephalus linnaei distribution?

BACKGROUND: In South America, Babesia vogeli is the primary causative agent of canine babesiosis, and brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato) are the vectors. The recent separation of brown dog ticks into Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu stricto ("temperate lineage") and Rhipicephalus linnaei ("tropical lineage") raised suspicions of the possibility of two distinct Babesia genotypes or even species being transmitted by these tick species. METHODS: To investigate this hypothesis, dog blood samples from Brazil (eight states), Paraguay, and Uruguay were collected to determine the gen

Ehrlichia species in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks in Cameroon.

Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species are tick-transmitted obligately intracellular bacteria that commonly cause disease in dogs worldwide. In addition to causing disease in canines, Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Ehrlichia ewingii, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum are responsible for emerging and life-threatening human zoonoses in the United States. We previously reported a high prevalence of E. canis infection in Cameroonian dogs based on serologic and molecular evidence. This study was undertaken to determine the Ehrlichia species (E. canis, E. chaffeensis, E. ewingii) present in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ti

Observation on the saliva and salivary gland extract of Haemaphysalis spinigera and Rhipicephalus sanguineus sanguineus.

Intracutaneous injection of histamine acid phosphate (HAP) and salivary gland extract (SGE) of Haemaphysalis spinigera and Rhipicephalus sanguineus sanguineus into sensitized and nonsensitized rabbits previously injected intravenously with Evans blue indicated that the ticks' saliva contained a pharmacodynamic substance in addition to having antigenic properties. A primary skin reaction in nonsensitized rabbits produced by this pharmacodynamic substance within 30 min was amplified by a more extensive skin reaction in sensitized rabbits. It was postulated that, in concert with this pharmacodyna

A review of acaricide resistance of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus group worldwide.

The brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus (included in the R. sanguineus group) is the most widespread Rhipicephalus species globally. This tick species is a vector of pathogens of veterinary and public health importance. The improper and frequent use of acaricides might have led to the development of acaricide resistance in this tick group. This review presents the status of R. sanguineus group resistance to various acaricides worldwide. Fifty studies published from 2001 to 2025 were included. Resistance is documented in multiple species, including R. sanguineus sensu lato and sensu stricto

An insight into the sialotranscriptome of the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus.

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus sanguineus, known as the brown dog tick, is a common ectoparasite of domestic dogs and can be found worldwide. R.sanguineus is recognized as the primary vector of the etiological agent of canine monocytic ehrlichiosis and canine babesiosis. Here we present the first description of a R. sanguineus salivary gland transcriptome by the production and analysis of 2,034 expressed sequence tags (EST) from two cDNA libraries, one consctructed using mRNA from dissected salivary glands from female ticks fed for 3-5 days (early to mid library, RsSGL1) and the another from ticks

Molecular detection of Fonsecaea pedrosoi in Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Rhipicephalus microplus ticks from Venezuela.

Chromoblastomycosis, caused primarily by Fonsecaea pedrosoi, is traditionally associated with traumatic environmental inoculation. We analyzed 50 Rhipicephalus sanguineus/R. microplus ticks from chromoblastomycosis-endemic Venezuelan states (Lara and Portuguesa) using Oxford Nanopore amplicon sequencing. Remarkably, F. pedrosoi dominated the tick eukaryotic microbiome, comprising 78% and 75% of fungal communities in Lara and Portuguesa, respectively. This unexpected high abundance across geographically distinct endemic foci suggests a previously unrecognized ecological association between tick

Rickettsia conorii israelensis in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks, Sardinia, Italy.

The presence of tick-borne Rickettsia spp. was examined by PCR using DNA samples extracted from 254 ticks collected from mammals originating from northern and eastern Sardinia, Italy. The spotted fever group rickettsial agent Rickettsia conorii israelensis was detected in 3 Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks from a dog for the first time in this geographical area. In addition, Ri. massiliae, Ri. slovaca, and Ri. aeschlimannii were detected in Rh. turanicus, Rh. sanguineus, Dermacentor marginatus, and Hyalomma marginatum marginatum ticks from dogs, goats, wild boar, and horse. Moreover, Candidatus

Quantitative study of Rickettsia massiliae in Rhipicephalus sanguineus organs.

Rickettsia massiliae, belonging to the spotted fever group of Rickettsia, is a human pathogen causing a similar course of disease to that caused by R. conorii, the originally recognized etiologic agent of Mediterranean spotted fever. In view of this similarity, we performed an ultrastructural study of R. massiliae in organs of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks, in order to advance knowledge of the complex dynamics at the tick-pathogen interface in rickettsioses. Adult R. massiliae-infected Rh. sanguineus ticks were fed on uninfected Hartley strain guinea pigs, and five females were collected dail

Apparent tick paralysis by Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) in dogs.

Certain tick species including Ixodes holocyclus can inoculate neurotoxins that induce a rapid, ascending flaccid paralysis in animals. Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the most widespread tick of dogs, is recognized as a vector of several pathogens causing diseases in dogs and humans. A single report suggests its role as cause of paralysis in dogs. This study presents the clinical history of 14 young dogs heavily infested by R. sanguineus (intensity of infestation, 63-328) in an endemic area of southern Italy. During May to June of 2011, dogs were presented at the clinical examination with neurologi

Infestation of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato on cats in Malta.

Studies on cats as hosts of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.) are scarce. Cats are regarded as infrequent hosts of this species complex, and usually only when dogs are also present. In order to compare the occurrence of developmental stages and mitochondrial DNA haplotypes of R. sanguineus s.l. on cats and other domestic or synanthropic mammalian species, 540 ticks were collected from cats, dogs, hedgehogs and one goat. Collections were made from April to September in 2016 and 2017, from 20 locations in Malta in southern Europe. The sampling sites included six cat colonies, where no d

Systematics and ecology of the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the brown dog tick, kennel tick, or pan-tropical dog tick, is probably the most widespread ixodid tick, colonising both human and canine dwellings. It is of great significance in both human and veterinary medicine as a vector of several important pathogens and can also cause clinical illness in heavy infestations of dogs. However, there are still significant taxonomic uncertainties, and it is probable that some records of this tick refer to other species. Most past reviews have been broad-ranging or have focused on the pathogens that R. sanguineus transmits, and relat

Ehrlichia canis in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks in the Ivory Coast.

Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis caused by Ehrlichia canis is distributed globally, but its prevalence in Africa is poorly known. In the study reported herein, 27% of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks collected from watchdogs in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, were positive for E. canis using quantitative real-time PCR. A new molecular strategy is proposed that can be used not only for epidemiological study, but also for the diagnosis of canine monocytic ehrlichiosis. Our findings show for the first time the presence of E. canis using molecular tools in the Ivory Coast, providing direct evidence for the prese

Rhipicephalus sanguineus salivary gland extract as a source of immunomodulatory molecules.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.), popularly known as 'brown dog tick', is the primary vector of pathogens affecting dogs worldwide. To enter the host's organism, these pathogens utilise the anticoagulant, antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory actions of compounds present in the tick's saliva; such compounds are released by the ectoparasite in order to attach and feed on dogs. Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the regulatory factors in inflammation, apoptosis and immunomodulation. Here, we evaluated the in vitro activity of salivary gland extract of female dog ticks on the ma

Transmission of Leishmania infantum by Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) in Dogs.

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus sanguineus is the most widely distributed tick in the world, which is partly due to its biological flexibility and the global distribution of its major host, the domestic dog. In Mediterranean region it could be principal reservoir host for Leishmania infantum, usually transmitted by the phlebotomine sand flies. In this study, we evaluated the vector potential of R. sanguineus in transmitting L. infantum to uninfected dogs. METHODS: During 2014, five dogs with clinical manifestations of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL), high anti-Leishmania antibody titers and tic

Rickettsia felis in Rhipicephalus sanguineus from two distant Chilean cities.

INTRODUCTION: Rickettsia felis is an emerging agent considered a human threat; although its natural reservoir and agent of transmission is the cat flea, it has been also found in other vectors. R. felis has been identified in Chile in cat fleas and in one specimen of Rhipicephalus sanguineus collected in the Metropolitan Region. The objective of this study was to detect the presence of Rickettsia spp. in R. sanguineus from dogs of two different and distant geographical areas in Chile. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a domiciliary sampling in urban and rural localities of two distant areas

Dog hair volatiles attract Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (Acari: Ixodidae) females.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.) (Latreille) feeds on domestic dogs worldwide. This tick species uses dog volatiles during host-seeking behavior. In this study, we identified volatile compounds from dog hairs involved in the host location of R. sanguineus s.l. The R. sanguineus s.l. females, but not males, were attracted to hair samples and Super Q extracts from Schnauzer dogs in Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. A total of 54 compounds from dog hair extracts were identified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, including hydrocarbons, aldehydes, alcohols, ketones, and car
