Biosynthetic code for divergolide assembly in a bacterial mangrove endophyte.

Divergolides are structurally diverse ansamycins produced by a bacterial endophyte (Streptomyces sp.) of the mangrove tree Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. By genomic analyses a gene locus coding for the divergolide pathway was detected. The div gene cluster encodes genes for the biosynthesis of 3-amino-5-hydroxybenzoate and the rare extender units ethylmalonyl-CoA and isobutylmalonyl-CoA, polyketide assembly by a modular type I polyketide synthase (PKS), and enzymes involved in tailoring reactions, such as a Baeyer-Villiger oxygenase. A detailed PKS domain analysis confirmed the stereochemical integrit

Multifarious plant growth-promoting traits of mangrove yeasts: growth enhancement in mangrove seedlings (Rhizophora mucronata) for conservation.

Plant Growth-Promoting Yeasts (PGPY) have garnered significant attention in recent years; however, research on PGPY from mangroves remains a largely unexplored frontier. This study, therefore, focused on exploring the multifaceted plant growth-promoting (PGP) capabilities of yeasts isolated from mangroves of Puthuvype and Kumbalam. The present work found that manglicolous yeasts exhibited diverse hydrolytic properties, with the predominance of lipolytic activity, in addition to other traits such as phosphate solubilization, and production of indole acetic acid, siderophore, ammonia, catalase,

Unraveling hydrogen sulfide-promoted lateral root development and growth in mangrove plant Kandelia obovata: insight into regulatory mechanism by TMT-based quantitative proteomic approaches.

Mangroves are the main intertidal ecosystems with varieties of root types along the tropical and subtropical coastlines around the world. The typical characteristics of mangrove habitats, including the abundant organic matter and nutrients, as well as the strong reductive environment, are favor for the production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). H2S, as a pivotal signaling molecule, has been evidenced in a wide variety of plant physiological and developmental processes. However, whether H2S functions in the mangrove root system establishment is not clear yet. Here, we reported the possible role of H

Mangrove forest recovery a decade after Super Typhoon Haiyan.

Many mangrove forests in the Philippines were severely damaged by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, one of the strongest tropical cyclones in recent world history. This study focuses on a specific patch of mangrove forest in Cancabato Bay, located in Tacloban-the city most severely affected. To assess the extent of typhoon-induced impacts on the forest, the intensities of wind, waves, and storm surge during the typhoon were hindcasted using an advanced meteorological-hydrodynamic coupling model. It is estimated that the storm surge and high waves, reaching up to 4.7 m and 1.3 m respectively, destroyed t

Global drivers of mangrove loss in protected areas.

Despite increasing efforts and investment in mangrove conservation, mangrove cover continues to decline globally. The extent to which protected area (PA) management effectively prevents mangrove loss globally across differing management objectives and governance types is not well understood. We combined remote sensing data with PA information to identify the extent and the drivers of mangrove loss across PAs with distinct governance types and protection levels based on categories developed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Mangrove loss due to storms and erosion was

Malaria Prevalence Near African Mangroves: Negative Association With Mangrove Extent, but Positive Association With Mangrove Greenness.

Malaria remains a major public health challenge, causing an estimated 600,000 deaths and 250 million infections annually. Most malaria control efforts focus on freshwater mosquito vectors, leaving saltwater-tolerant vector mosquitoes inhabiting coastal ecosystems like mangrove forests understudied. Historically, the role of mangrove forests as breeding grounds for malaria vectors often motivated their destruction. However, mangroves provide crucial ecosystem services, and their impact on malaria transmission remains poorly understood. This study presents the first multi-country analysis linkin

Monitoring detailed mangrove hurricane damage and early recovery using multisource remote sensing data.

Due to their location in tropical latitudes, mangrove forests are susceptible to the impact of hurricanes and can be vastly damaged by their high-speed winds. Given the logistic difficulties regarding field surveys in mangroves, remote sensing approaches have been considered a reliable alternative. We quantified trends in damage and early signs of canopy recovery in a fringe Rhizophora mangle area of Marismas Nacionales, Mexico, following the landfall of Hurricane Willa in October 2018. We monitored (2016-2021) broad canopy defoliation using 21 vegetation indices (VI) from the Google Earth Eng

Evaluation of molluscicidal activity of three mangrove species (Avicennia schaueriana, Laguncularia racemosa and Rhizophora mangle) and their effects on the bioactivity of Biomphalaria glabrata Say, 1818.

Schistosomiasis is a disease of global extent reaching populations in social vulnerability. One of the control measures of this parasitosis is the use of molluscicidal substances that can fight snails of the genus Biomphalaria, intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni. The aim of this work was to study the toxic activity of three mangrove species (Avicennia schaueriana Stapf. & Leech, ex Moldenke, 1939, Laguncularia racemosa (L.) CF Gaertn, 1807 and Rhizophora mangle L. 1753) on the biological activities of snails Biomphalaria glabrata. Hydroalcoholic extracts were prepared from the stem and

A local exploratory assessment of mangrove aboveground carbon stocks based on Sentinel-2 NDVI in Pangpang Bay, Indonesia.

Mangrove ecosystems play an important role in climate change mitigation through their capacity to store large amounts of blue carbon. Accurate estimation of aboveground biomass (AGB) is therefore essential for monitoring carbon dynamics and supporting sustainable mangrove management. This study evaluated the applicability of Sentinel-2-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for estimating mangrove aboveground biomass and carbon stocks in Pangpang Bay, East Java, Indonesia. Field measurements from 13 sample plots were used to develop an empirical relationship between NDVI and AGB

Structural Diversity and Bioactivities of Mangrove-Derived Fungal Polyketids (2020-2025).

Mangrove forests represent a complex ecosystem inhabiting tropical and subtropical intertidal zones, harboring diverse microbial communities including fungi, actinomycetes, bacteria, cyanobacteria, algae, and protozoa. Among these communities, mangrove-derived fungi, as the second-largest ecological group of marine fungi, not only play essential roles in establishing and sustaining this biosphere but also serve as an important source of structurally unique and biologically active secondary metabolites. This review systematically summarizes research progress on metabolites isolated from mangrov

Assessing mangrove sensitivity to thermal variations through a satellite-based analysis on the southern São Paulo coast, Brazil.

Mangroves near subtropical range limits may benefit from fewer cold constraints, yet warmer conditions can also increase atmospheric water demand. These competing possibilities were examined in the Cananéia-Iguape Coastal System, southeastern Brazil, by combining ERA5 2 m air temperature with MODIS normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and leaf area index (LAI). Air-temperature trends were assessed for 1979-2019 with the Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope. Temperature-vegetation associations were calculated for 2003-2019 from mangrove-wide means and fro

Distinct molecular responses of mangrove plants to hypoxia and reoxygenation stresses contribute to their resilience in coastal wetland environment.

Mangroves adapt to periodical submergence and constitute resilient ecosystems in coastal environments. The question is whether they can sustain long submergence stress when sea level rises as a consequence of climate change. To address this, seedlings of two representative mangrove species that acclimate to low to mid tide (Avicennia marina) and mid to high tide (Kandelia obovata) conditions were treated with continual submergence for 7 days as extended hypoxia, or semi-diurnal cyclic submergence and reoxygenation for 7 days. At specific time points, leaves were collected to construct RNA-Sequ

Secondary Metabolites from the Mangrove Ecosystem-Derived Fungi Penicillium spp.: Chemical Diversity and Biological Activity.

Mangrove ecosystems have attracted widespread attention because of their high salinity, muddy or sandy soil, and low pH, as well as being partly anoxic and periodically soaked by tides. Mangrove plants, soil, or sediment-derived fungi, especially the Penicillium species, possess unique metabolic pathways to produce secondary metabolites with novel structures and potent biological activities. This paper reviews the structural diversity and biological activity of secondary metabolites isolated from mangrove ecosystem-derived Penicillium species over the past 5 years (January 2020-October 2024),

Characterization of physiochemical and anatomical features associated with enhanced phytostabilization of copper in Bruguiera cylindrica (L.) Blume.

Copper is an essential micronutrient for normal plant metabolism and it is involved in number of physiological processes in plants but at the same time, at concentrations above threshold level, it acts as a potential stress factor. In this study, the phytoremediation potential of Bruguiera cylindrica (L.) Blume with respect to Cu was evaluated for the first time. Various physiochemical and anatomical parameters were analyzed in three-month-old healthy plantlets of B. cylindrica on exposure to different concentrations of CuSO4 (0, 0.05, 0.15, and 0.25 mM)for 20 d. Higher uptake and accumulation
