The emergence of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) coupled to iron reduction (named Feammox) refreshes the microbial pathways for nitrogen (N) loss. However, the ecological role of Feammox, compared with conventional denitrification and anammox, in microbial N attenuation in ecosystems remains unclear. Here, the specific contribution of Feammox to N loss and the underlying microbiome interactive characteristics in a riparian ecosystem were investigated through 15N isotope tracing and molecular analysis. Feammox was highlighted in the riparian interface soils and maximally contributed 14.2

Rhizosphere microbiomes are central to plant nutrition, pathogen suppression, and rhizosphere health, yet their functions remain difficult to predict from taxonomic composition alone. We argue that microbial siderophores offer a chemically explicit route from taxonomic associations to trait-based rhizosphere ecology. These structurally diverse iron-chelating metabolites link iron mobilization to ecological interactions across microbial, plant, and soil-fauna interfaces. In microbe-microbe systems, siderophore structure-receptor compatibility provides a well-established mechanism underlying res

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA), a widespread environmental pollutant, has been extensively studied for its effects on bacteria and plant, but its impact on rhizosphere bacterial communities and plant root traits is less understood. At the same time, the role of bacteria in helping plants resist adversity is widely recognized, but the relationship between BPA-induced with rhizosphere bacterial changes and root development is still unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of varying BPA concentrations (1.5, 17.2, and 50 mg/L) on soybean root traits and rhizosphere bacterial communi

The objective of this study was to determine if U sediment concentrations in a U-contaminated wetland located within the Savannah River Site, South Carolina, were greater in the rhizosphere than in the nonrhizosphere. U concentrations were as much as 1100% greater in the rhizosphere than in the nonrhizosphere fractions; however and importantly, not all paired samples followed this trend. Iron (but not C, N, or S) concentrations were significantly enriched in the rhizosphere. XAS analyses showed that in both sediment fractions, U existed as UO22+ coordinated with iron(III)-oxides and organic ma

The ability of rhizosphere of four plant species to promote the degradation of charcoal-fixed atrazine and simazine in cement blocks of a long-term contaminated soil when mixed with a normal soil at 1:1 ratio was tested. Of the four selected plants viz., rye grass (Lolium perenne), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacae), Pennisetum (Pennisetum clandestinum) and a spring onion (Allium sp.) used in this study, only P. clandestinum was able to survive in herbicide contaminated soil while other plants died within few days after germination/transplanting. Both atrazine and simazine were degraded at a fa

Acidification of the rhizosphere is a key process in the homeostasis of multiple essential nutrients, including iron. Under iron deficiency, the release of protons from the roots helps solubilize and increase the accessibility of iron in the soil. Rhizosphere acidification has been widely examined in many iron homeostasis studies, generally using a qualitative method based on the color change of bromocresol purple, a pH indicator dye, near the roots. In this chapter, we introduce an adapted version of a rhizosphere acidification assay protocol that allows for the quantitative assessment of sma

The rhizosphere metabolic circular economy (RMCE) governs the exchange, reuse, and reconfiguration of metabolites at the root-soil interface. Building on traditional binary plant-microbe models, this perspective advances an expanded RMCE framework by integrating three additional interdependent dimensions that explain how rhizosphere metabolic processes persist over time, organize across space, and recover under environmental stress. First, the live-dead plant-microbe continuum enables metabolic persistence by incorporating microbial necromass and root residues into long-term carbon sequestrati

In the rhizosphere, plant roots cope with both pathogenic and beneficial bacterial interactions. The exometabolite production in certain bacterial species may regulate root growth and other root-microbe interactions in the rhizosphere. Here, we elucidated the role of cyanide production in pseudomonad virulence affecting plant root growth and other rhizospheric processes. Exposure of Arabidopsis thaliana Col-0 seedlings to both direct (with KCN) and indirect forms of cyanide from different pseudomonad strains caused significant inhibition of primary root growth. Further, we report that this gro

A bioassay for rhizosphere-applied phytotoxicants was developed and evaluated with a broad range of chemicals. Test substances were applied to the rhizosphere of whole, intact bush bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Bush Blue Lake 290) grown in a solid support medium and the resultant ethylene production was measured to detect the presence of phytotoxic materials. The beans were encapsulated in plastic bags for 2 hr following treatment and then incubated for 24 hr in the dark. Ethylene and ethane accumulating within the bags were quantified via gas-solid chromatography. The application of

Over the past decade, microplastic pollution has emerged as a subject of considerable interest and extensive research, with implications for human health and ecosystems. This paper briefly summarized the sources of microplastics and their distribution in the soil. It comprehensively addressed the effects of microplastics on the soil-plant system, including the impacts on soil physicochemical properties and plant rhizosphere microbial communities. The effects of microplastics on plant growth, along with their transformation and accumulation within plants, were evaluated. Microplastics can adher

Dopamine plays a critical role in animal physiology and interactions with gut microbes. In plants, dopamine is known to function in plant defense and abiotic stress tolerance; however, its role in mediating plant-microbiome interactions remains unexplored. In this study, we show that dopamine is one of the most abundant exometabolites with natural variation in root exudates across diverse Brachypodium distachyon lines, suggesting a potential role in rhizosphere microbial assembly. To further investigate this, we colonized ten natural B. distachyon lines with a 16-member bacterial synthetic com

Relationships between microbial communities of the rhizosphere and plants can affect the successful establishment of plantations and their modification for forest restoration efforts. Recognising these fungal and bacterial assemblages is important for Acacia mangium plantations, as they are widely established in reforestation programs across the tropics. However, the microbial community associated with the rhizosphere of A. mangium and of plants often thriving within or in the proximity of A. mangium plantations is understudied. We hypothesise that microbial assemblages of the topsoil, hosted

UNLABELLED: Amidst global climate change, the escalating atmospheric CO2 levels have intensified ocean acidification (OA), significantly impacting the structure and function of marine ecosystems. Seagrass beds, representative nearshore ecosystems, play a pivotal role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity preservation, and nearshore environmental equilibrium. Rhizosphere microorganisms within seagrass beds, essential components of the ecosystem, drive material cycling and energy flow. Their community structure and functions demonstrate heightened sensitivity to environmental variations. While p

Shade avoidance responses are defined as the plastic responses of plants to neighboring shading signals through changes in the light spectrum, which limit planting density in modern agricultural practices. Here, we found that shade avoidance responses depend on soil microbes and identified a microbe-root-shoot circuit that bolsters aboveground shade tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana. Rhizosphere microbes systemically regulate the expression of aboveground shade-responsive genes, which are associated with the altered homeostasis of jasmonic-acid- and salicylic-acid-related metabolites. We furth

Indigenous bacteria from poplar tree (Populus canadensis var. eugenei 'Imperial Carolina') and southern California shrub rhizospheres, as well as two tree-colonizing Rhizobium strains (ATCC 10320 and ATCC 35645), were engineered to express constitutively and stably toluene o-monooxygenase (TOM) from Burkholderia cepacia G4 by integrating the tom locus into the chromosome. The poplar and Rhizobium recombinant bacteria degraded trichloroethylene at a rate of 0.8 to 2.1 nmol/min/mg of protein and were competitive against the unengineered hosts in wheat and barley rhizospheres for 1 month (coloniz

Thawing permafrost soils are predicted to release substantial amounts of carbon by 2100. In addition to this, warming-induced active-layer deepening and increased rooting depth may result in further carbon losses from previously-frozen soil by stimulating microbial communities through fresh carbon inputs inducing positive rhizosphere priming. While models based on temperate data predict significant permafrost carbon loss through rhizosphere priming, data from permafrost soils are lacking. Here, we provide direct evidence of live plant-induced positive rhizosphere priming in permafrost and acti

Here we characterized the effect of the ectomycorrhizal symbiosis on the genotypic and functional diversity of soil Pseudomonas fluorescens populations and analysed its possible consequences in terms of plant nutrition, development and health. Sixty strains of P. fluorescens were isolated from the bulk soil of a forest nursery, the ectomycorrhizosphere and the ectomycorrhizas of the Douglas fir (Pseudostuga menziesii) seedlings-Laccaria bicolor S238N. They were characterized in vitro with the following criteria: ARDRA, phosphate solubilization, siderophore, HCN and AIA production, genes of N2-
