UNLABELLED: Methanethiol (MT) is a sulfur-containing compound produced during dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) degradation by marine bacteria. The C-S bond of MT can be cleaved by methanethiol oxidases (MTOs) to release a sulfur atom. However, the cleaving process remains unclear, and the species of sulfur product is uncertain. It has long been assumed that MTOs produce hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from MT. Herein, we studied the MTOs in the Rhodobacteraceae family-whose members are important DMSP degraders ubiquitous in marine environments. We identified 57 MTOs from 1,904 Rhodobacteraceae genomes

Many microbial secondary metabolites have been studied for decades primarily because of their antimicrobial properties. However, several of these metabolites also possess nonantimicrobial functions, both influencing the physiology of the producer and their ecological neighbors. An example of a versatile bacterial secondary metabolite with multiple functions is the tropone derivative tropodithietic acid (TDA). TDA is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial compound produced by several members of the Rhodobacteraceae family, a major marine bacterial lineage, within the genera Phaeobacter, Tritonibacter,

Strain LCG007, isolated from Lu Chao Harbor's intertidal water, phylogenetically represents a novel genus within the family Rhodobacteraceae. Metabolically, it possesses a wide array of amino acid metabolic genes that enable it to thrive on both amino acids or peptides. Also, it could hydrolyze peptides containing D-amino acids, highlighting its potential role in the cycling of refractory organic matter. Moreover, strain LCG007 could utilize various carbohydrates, including mannopine and D-apiose-compounds primarily derived from terrestrial plants-demonstrating its capacity to degrade terrestr

Methylmercury, biomagnifying through food chains, is highly toxic for aquatic life. Its production and degradation are largely driven by microbial transformations; however, diversity and metabolic activity of mercury transformers, resulting in methylmercury concentrations in environments, remain poorly understood. Microbial mats are thick biofilms where oxic and anoxic metabolisms cooccur, providing opportunities to investigate the complexity of the microbial mercury transformations over contrasted redox conditions. Here, we conducted a genome-resolved metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analys

Sulfitobacter is one of the major sulfite-oxidizing alphaproteobacterial groups and is often associated with marine algae and corals. Their association with the eukaryotic host cell may have important ecological contexts due to their complex lifestyle and metabolism. However, the role of Sulfitobacter in cold-water corals remains largely unexplored. In this study, we explored the metabolism and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in two closely related Sulfitobacter faviae strains isolated from cold-water black corals at a depth of ~1000 m by comparative genomic analysis. The two strains shared hig

White plague (WP) is a highly destructive coral disease that rapidly kills susceptible coral species by mass tissue lysis. The pathogen and underlying causes of this disease are not known. In this laboratory-based study, we examined a small coral-associated gall crab from the family Cryptochiridae in terms of a possible association with WP-like lesions. A series of experiments was conducted after observations that 2 scleractinian coral species, Diploria labyrinthiformis and Pseudodiploria strigosa, developed signs of WP-like disease within a laboratory holding aquarium and that small gall crab

Symbiotic associations with prokaryotes are common among marine filter-feeding invertebrates. In the almost exclusively colonial phylum Bryozoa, however, such associations have only been recorded in some species of the order Cheilostomata (class Gymnolaemata). Here we describe for the first time symbiotic bacteria in the colonies, larvae and developing ancestrulae of the bryozoan Patinella verrucaria from the order Cyclostomata (class Stenolaemata) using transmission electron and fluorescent microscopy. Ultrastructural and molecular data suggest the existence of two distinct bacterial species,

Phosphonic acid (phosphonate) that possesses a carbon-phosphours bond is a chemically stable form of organic phosphorus. Various phosphonic acids are widely distributed in oceanic waters; in particular, methylphosphonic acid (namely methylphosphonate) is believed to be responsible for global methane production. To discuss the microbial degradation of phosphonic acids, we investigated the utilization of phosphonic acid compounds by cultures of marine bacteria, Phaeobacter sp., Ruegeria sp. (Rhodobacterales), and Thalassospira sp. (Rhodospirillales). These bacterial cultures were able to grow on

Asthma, a chronic bronchial disorder prevalent in children/adolescents, is exacerbated under environmental conditions like dust storms. The current study investigated heavy metal levels, airborne bacteria, and serum IL-4/IL-8 in asthmatics during before/after dust storms in Iraq's Al-Anbar, Baghdad, and Kirkuk provinces. Airborne heavy metals were quantified by ICP-MS, serum cytokines by ELISA, and bacterial communities via metagenomics. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism (p < 0.05 significant). ICP-MS revealed considerably elevated post-storm concentrations of As, Ag, B,

Choline-O-sulfate (COS) and choline are ubiquitous in the environment, and diverse bacteria catabolize them into glycine betaine for osmoprotection or as a carbon and/or nitrogen source. The characterized bet genes involved in COS and choline catabolism are usually clustered in the genome with one regulatory gene, betI. Here, we report a novel regulatory mechanism of COS and choline catabolism by two BetIs in the model marine Roseobacter group bacterium Ruegeria pomeroyi DSS-3. The insertion of two unrelated genes divided the R. pomeroyi DSS-3 bet cluster into two parts, with each part having

Cr(VI) was efficiently reduced to Cr(III) by Pannonibacter phragmitetus LSSE-09 encapsulated in liquid-core alginate-carboxymethyl cellulose capsules under alkaline conditions. Taking into account the physical properties of the capsules, the activity of encapsulated cells, and total Cr(III) concentration in the supernatant, optimal conditions (0.5% w/v sodium alginate; 2% w/v sodium carboxymethyl cellulose; 0.1 M CaCl₂; 30-min gelation time) for LSSE-09 encapsulation were determined. At optimal conditions, a relatively high reduction rate of 4.20 mg g ((dry weight))⁻¹ min⁻¹ was obtained. Total

Although shifts in bacterial communities during harmful algal blooms (HABs) have been studied extensively, the assembly processes of bacterioplankton communities across complete bloom cycles remain insufficiently resolved. In this study, based on 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing, we characterized the succession and assembly of bacterioplankton communities across four stages of a coastal bloom caused by Scrippsiella acuminata. We found that the alpha diversity of free-living (FL) bacterioplankton decreased with bloom progression, whereas the alpha diversity of particle-attached (PA) bac

BACKGROUND: The genus Sulfitobacter, a member of the family Roseobacteraceae, is widely distributed in the ocean and is believed to play crucial roles in the global sulfur cycle. However, gene clusters associated with sulfur oxidation in genomes of the type strains of this genus have been poorly studied. Furthermore, taxonomic errors have been identified in this genus, potentially leading to significant confusion in ecological and evolutionary interpretations in subsequent studies of the genus Sulfitobacter. This study aims to investigate the taxonomic status of this genus and explore the meta

Chromite ore processing residues (COPR) is the source of the Cr(VI) contamination in the environment. Pannonibacter phragmitetus BB was used to treat two different types of COPRs in this research. The water-soluble Cr(VI) of COPR A and B is 3,982.9 and 1,181.4 mg/kg, respectively. In the column biotreatment process, P. phragmitetus BB can reduce Cr(VI) in the leachate to an undetectable level at the flow rate of 1 and 2 ml/min. In the direct biotreatment process, Cr(VI) in the liquid supernatant of COPR A and B decreased from 265 and 200 mg/l to 145 and 40 mg/kg after 240 h of incubation. In o

Coral disease is a global problem. Diseases are typically named or described based on macroscopic changes, but broad signs of coral distress such as tissue loss or discoloration are unlikely to be specific to a particular pathogen. For example, there appear to be multiple diseases that manifest the rapid tissue loss that characterizes 'white plague.' PhyloChip™ G3 microarrays were used to compare the bacterial community composition of both healthy and white plague-like diseased corals. Samples of lobed star coral (Orbicella annularis, formerly of the genus Montastraea[1]) were collected from t

Soda lakes, with their high salinity and high pH, pose a very challenging environment for life. Microorganisms living in these harsh conditions have had to adapt their physiology and gene inventory. Therefore, we analyzed the complete genome of the haloalkaliphilic photoheterotrophic bacterium Rhodobaca barguzinensis strain alga05. It consists of a 3,899,419 bp circular chromosome with 3624 predicted coding sequences. In contrast to most of Rhodobacterales, this strain lacks any extrachromosomal elements. To identify the genes responsible for adaptation to high pH, we compared the gene invento

Chirality, a fundamental property of matter, is often overlooked in the studies of marine organic matter cycles. Dihydroxypropanesulfonate (DHPS), a globally abundant organosulfur compound, serves as an ecologically important currency for nutrient and energy transfer from phytoplankton to bacteria in the ocean. However, the chirality of DHPS in nature and its transformation remain unclear. Here, we developed a novel approach using chiral phosphorus-reagent labeling to separate DHPS enantiomers. Our findings demonstrated that at least one enantiomer of DHPS is present in marine diatoms and cocc

In recent years, global climate change and pollution of the marine environment have caused large-scale coral deaths and severe damages to coral reef ecosystems. Numerous studies have shown that coral diseases are closely related to microorganisms. And microplastics (MPs) are a potential threat to corals. In marine ecosystems, MPs are an emerging contaminant. MPs have a strong adsorption effect on pollutants in the water environment, and they are very easily colonized by microorganisms to form biofilms. Biofilms may accumulate many pathogens, increasing the probability of coral disease. However

Aerobic bacteria that degrade methylphosphonates and produce methane as a byproduct have emerged as key players in marine carbon and phosphorus cycles. Here, we present two new draft genome sequences of the genus Marivita that were assembled from metagenomes from hypersaline former industrial salterns and compare them to five other Marivita reference genomes. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that both of these metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) represent new species in the genus. Average nucleotide identities to the closest taxon were <85%. The MAGs were assembled with SPAdes, binned with MetaBA

Phosphorus is a vital nutrient for living organisms and is obtained by bacteria primarily via phosphate uptake. However, phosphate is often scarcely accessible in nature, and there is evidence that in many areas of the ocean, its concentration limits bacterial growth. Surprisingly, the phosphate starvation response has been extensively investigated in different model organisms (e.g., Escherichia coli), but there is a dearth of studies on heterotrophic marine bacteria. In this work, we describe the response of Pseudovibrio sp. strain FO-BEG1, a metabolically versatile alphaproteobacterium and p
