Neuroborreliosis with involvement of rhombencephalon: A case report.

We describe a case of a 52 year-old woman who was hospitalized with rhombencephalitis caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. The patient presented with intermittent fever, dry cough, fatigue, global headache, night sweats, unintentional weight loss, and neurological symptoms like diplopia, tremor, paresthesia and ataxia. Examination of serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed positive Borrelia burgdorferi-specific antibody index and presence of CSF oligoclonal IgG bands, indicating intrathecal synthesis of Borrelia-specific antibodies. The clinical and biochemical picture thus suggeste

Respiratory rhythms generated in the lamprey rhombencephalon.

Brainstem networks generating the respiratory rhythm in lampreys are still not fully characterized. In this study, we described the patterns of respiratory activities and we identified the general location of underlying neural networks. In a semi-intact preparation including the brain and gills, rhythmic discharges were recorded bilaterally with surface electrodes placed over the vagal motoneurons. The main respiratory output driving rhythmic gill movements consisted of short bursts (40.9+/-15.6 ms) of discharge occurring at a frequency of 1.0+/-0.3 Hz. This fast pattern was interrupted by lon

The human rhombencephalon at the end of the embryonic period proper.

The human rhombencephalon at 8 postovulatory weeks (stage 23) is described and illustrated for the first time with the aid of silver-impregnated sections and graphic reconstructions. The motor and sensory trigeminal nuclei were among those studied, and the latter was found to be almost contiguous to the dentate nucleus. Fibers to the principal sensory nucleus join the mesencephalic trigeminal tract, which also seems to be connected with the motor fibers. Fine fibers from the sensory root join the tractus solitarius, which appears to receive connections from the facial, glossopharyngeal, and va

[A new concept of Pierre Robin syndrome and disease: dysneurulation of the rhombencephalon].

Pierre Robin's syndrome, a disorder apparently constituted by peripheral signs, is in fact the result of early major disturbances of ontogenesis of motor and regulatory organization of the fetal rhombencephalon. This is confirmed by the presenting signs in neonates with Pierre Robin's syndrome: --electrophysiological deglutition and sucking disorders as demonstrated on electromyography; --disorders in tone of tongue, pharyngeal and laryngeal muscles; --cardiac and respiratory regulatory disorders as shown by central and obstructive apneas with diminished oxygen pressure and bradycardia of cent

[Comparative studies of rhombencephalon vascularization in rabbit and man in light of anatomic and microangiographic studies].

A comparative study of a microvascularization of the rhombencephalon, especially pre- and capillary system, in rabbits and in humans was performed. It was intended to find out whether there were any similarities and differences in rhombencephalon microvascularization of a rabbit and man. The study was carried out on 75 (50--female, 25--male) mixed-race rabbits aged 4 months, as well as on 30 (15--females, 10--males) human brains that had been dissected free from cadavers, aged from 20 up to 70 years. Angiography of sections of the rhombencephalon in rabbits and cadavers was performed. The vess

A comparative study of phosphatases in the rhombencephalon and mesencephalon of fresh water turtle (Lissemys punctata granosa).

The study deals with the histoenzymological architecture of the rhomencephalon and mesencephalon of a fresh water turtle. Attempt has been made to see the location of phosphatases (acid and alkaline phosphatases, 5-nucleotidase, adenosine triphosphatase) in the different constituents of these brain areas. The distribution of acid phosphatase is similar to Nissl staining, hence the enzyme has been used as a marker to differentiate various nuclei in the different brain areas. Moreover, the concentration of acid phosphatase is higher in large neurons like that of Nissl substance and, therefore, a

[Cultivation of whole brain slices: a description of the method and the results of its use for culturing the rhombencephalon and midbrain of chick embryos].

A method and device for obtaining embryo brain slices are described. Results of cultivation of slices of rhombencephalon and mesencephalon are presented obtained in accord with a proposed technique of the "swimming float" (Olenev, 1979). With this cultivation, original topographical relations between brain nuclei and fibrillar tracts remain unchanged that enables us to compare these cultures with histological sections of brain to identify strictly the structures being cultivated. Cultured neurons of nuclei of XII and VIII pairs of cranial nerves have been first described in addition to various

Biochemical differentiation of aggregating cell cultures of different fetal rat brain regions.

Rotation-mediated aggregating cell cultures of mechanically dissociated fetal rat brains divided into three (telencephalon, mesencephalon-diencephalon and rhombencephalon), or two (telencephalon and mesencephalon-diencephalon plus rhombencephalon) parts were examined for their biochemical differentiation by measuring the specific activities of choline acetyltransferase, acetylcholinesterase, glutamic acid decarboxylase, tyrosine 3-monooxygenase, aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, catechol methyltransferase and monoamine oxidase. The results showed that such parts yielded cultures that were r

Severe second-trimester obstructive ventriculomegaly related to disorders of diencephalic, mesencephalic and rhombencephalic differentiation.

By review of a series of cases, we set out to identify sonographic features suggestive of an obstructive mechanism in second-trimester fetuses with ventriculomegaly and describe developmental disorders related to pathological differentiation of the diencephalon, mesencephalon and rhombencephalon that lead to obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid flow. We studied retrospectively 11 fetuses referred for severe second-trimester ventriculomegaly of undetermined origin. Neurosonography was performed with detailed analysis of the third ventricle, thalami, cerebral aqueduct and cerebellum. The cerebral

Ethylenethiourea-induced hydrocephalus in vivo and in vitro with a note on the use of a constant gaseous atmosphere for rat embryo cultures.

Embryos were studied either after direct exposure to ethylenethiourea (ETU) during incubation of embryo cultures or after maternal ETU dosing and subsequent embryonic development in utero with a view to assess the similarity of these two systems to produce hydrocephalus. Ten-day-old rat embryos were incubated with nutrient media containing 0-2.0 mM of ETU in a constant gasseous environment following a newly modified method. The cultured embryos showed hydrocephalus in the form of dilated rhombencephalon and other anomalies at the 1.5 and 2.0 mM of ETU after 26 hours of incubation. No anomalies

Morphology and morphometry of the human embryonic brain: A three-dimensional analysis.

The three-dimensional dynamics and morphology of the human embryonic brain have not been previously analyzed using modern imaging techniques. The morphogenesis of the cerebral vesicles and ventricles was analyzed using images derived from human embryo specimens from the Kyoto Collection, which were acquired with a magnetic resonance microscope equipped with a 2.35-T superconducting magnet. A total of 101 embryos between Carnegie stages (CS) 13 and 23, without apparent morphological damage or torsion in the brain ventricles and axes, were studied. To estimate the uneven development of the cereb

Ultrasound visualization of the central nervous system during embryonic and fetal periods: Neurosonoembryology utilizing multiple three-dimensional transvaginal ultrasound technology.

OBJECTIVE: To study the ultrasonographic features of the central nervous system (CNS) in normally developing embryos and fetuses with a crown-rump length (CRL) of 10-84 mm, utilizing a high-frequency transvaginal probe in conjunction with various three-dimensional (3D) imaging modes. METHODS: From January 2020 to February 2021, 210 normally developing embryos and fetuses in early pregnancy were enrolled and classified based on their gestational age. A high-frequency transvaginal transducer was used to perform 2D and 3D ultrasounds, and the 3D images were saved. These images were then processe

Neuroradiological and clinical findings in rhombencephalosynapsis.

Rhombencephalosynapsis is an unusual disorder characterised by maldevelopment of the rhombencephalon, sometimes with supratentorial midline anomalies. We report MRI findings in a 39-year-old woman, the oldest in the literature. MRI demonstrated hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, with fusion of the cerebellar hemispheres and abnormally oriented folia. Supratentorial anomalies were also seen.

A vesicular glutamate transporter in lampreys: cDNA cloning and early expression in the nervous system.

Vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUTs) accumulate glutamate into synaptic vesicles of glutamatergic neurons, and thus are considered to define the phenotype of these neurons. Glutamate also appears to play a role in the development of the nervous system of vertebrates. Here we report the characterization of a vesicular glutamate transporter of lamprey (lVGluT), a novel member of the VGluT gene family. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that lVGLUT cannot be assigned to any of the three VGLUT isoforms characterized in teleosts and mammals, suggesting that these classes may have been fixed after

Distribution of corticotropin-releasing-factor-like immunoreactivity in brainstem of two monkey species (Saimiri sciureus and Macaca fascicularis): an immunohistochemical study.

Immunohistochemical methods were utilized to systematically map the distribution of corticotropin-releasing-factor-like immunoreactivity (CRF-LI) in the diencephalon, mesencephalon, and rhombencephalon of two monkey species (Saimiri sciureus and Macaca fascicularis). A primary antiserum directed against the human form of the peptide was utilized. Immunoreactive neuronal perikarya and processes were evident in numerous areas, and the distributions of these elements were similar for the two species. As previously reported for rats, monkeys, and human, intense immunoreactivity was evident in puta
