Pathogens transmitted by Ixodes ricinus.

Ixodes ricinus is the most important tick vector in central and western Europe and one of the most researched parasites. However, in the published literature on the tick and the pathogens it transmits, conjecture about specific transmission cycles and the clinical significance of certain microbes is not always clearly separated from confirmed facts. This article aims to present up-to-date, evidence-based information about the well-researched human pathogens tick-borne encephalitis virus, louping-ill virus, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and several Babesia species,

[The biology of the Ixodes ricinus tick].

More than 800 tick species have been reported world-wide however only about 30 tick species feed on humans, among them Ixodes ricinus, which is the most frequent tick species biting humans in Europe. It is the vector of Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease and of the tick-borne encephalitis virus. I. ricinus ticks pass through three developmental stages: larvae, nymphs and adults (females and males). More than 300 animal species have been reported as natural hosts for I. ricinus and 50 vertebrate species have been identified as reservoir hosts for B. burgdorferi. The density of this

[Ixodes ricinus, transmitted diseases and reservoirs].

The tick Ixodes ricinus has been recorded in most Italian regions especially in thermo-mesophilous woods and shrubby habitats where the relative humidity allow the tick to complete its 3 year developmental cycle, as predicted for the European climatic ranges. This tick acts both as vector and reservoir for a series of wildlife zoonotic pathogens, especially the agents of Lyme diseases, Tick borne encephalitis and Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis, which are emerging in most of Europe. To assess the spatial distribution of these pathogens and the infection risk for humans and animals within the t

Transmission of Bartonella henselae by Ixodes ricinus.

Bartonella spp. are facultative intracellular bacteria associated with several emerging diseases in humans and animals. B. henselae causes cat-scratch disease and is increasingly associated with several other syndromes, particularly ocular infections and endocarditis. Cats are the main reservoir for B. henselae and the bacteria are transmitted to cats by cat fleas. However, new potential vectors are suspected of transmitting B. henselae, in particular, Ixodes ricinus, the most abundant ixodid tick that bites humans in western Europe. We used a membrane-feeding technique to infect I. ricinus wi

Babesia species in questing Ixodes ricinus, Sweden.

Babesiosis is an emerging tick-transmitted zoonosis in large parts of the world. In Sweden, the occurrence and diversity of Babesia species is largely unknown. In order to estimate the exposure to Babesia from infected ticks, we collected questing Ixodes ricinus from several sites across southern Sweden during two consecutive field seasons and investigated the occurrence of Babesia species. We report for the first time the occurrence of the zoonotic species Babesia venatorum in Swedish ticks, with a prevalence of 1%. We also detected B. microti (prevalence 3.2%) and B. divergens (prevalence 0.

[Exposure to Ixodes ricinus bites among soldiers].

Results of an investigation on the exposure to tick bites among soldiers in 6 permanent army structures on the territory of Belgrade are shown. Four army structures were found to be active foci of Lyme borreliosis. Infection rates among Ixodes ticks were from 10% in urban structures to 42.1% in rural structures. Exposure of soldiers to tick bites was the largest in rural army structures--3.40%, while in urban army structures it was 0.14%. Among 38 tick bitten army members, 1 developed clinical manifestation as Lyme borreliosis (2.6%).

The biology of Ixodes ricinus with emphasis on its ecology.

Prior to its identification as the vector of Lyme borreliosis spirochaetes in Europe in 1983, interest in Ixodes ricinus (L.) was moderate and mainly concerned the transmission of pathogens to farm animals and of tick-borne encephalitis virus to humans. The situation now is very different, and more papers have been published on I. ricinus than on any other ixodid tick species. However, this large literature is scattered and in recent years has become dominated by the molecular detection and characterization of the many pathogens that I. ricinus transmits. Several decades have now elapsed since

Larvicidal activity of Ricinus communis extract against mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Vector control strategies play significant role in reducing the transmission of malaria, dengue and other vector-borne diseases. The control of vector population using synthetic insecticides has resulted in development of insecticide resistance and negative effects on humans and environment. The present investigation evaluated the larvicidal potential of methanol, dichloromethane and hexane extracts of leaves and seeds of Ricinus communis (castor) plant against the early IV instar larvae of the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti, and malaria vector, Anopheles culicifacies.

Babesia species occurring in Austrian Ixodes ricinus ticks.

Babesiosis is a tick-transmitted disease of veterinary and medical importance. The first Austrian case of human babesiosis was recently recorded. In the current study, ticks at all life cycle stages (instars), including 853 Ixodes ricinus and 11 Haemaphysalis concinna ticks, from sampling sites throughout Austria were examined for the presence of Babesia spp. by using 18S rRNA gene PCR and sequencing, and the overall mean infection rate was 51.04%. The infection rates for sampling sites were highly variable, ranging from 0% to almost 100%. Different instars and different sexes were infected al

Deep Sequencing Analysis of the Ixodes ricinus Haemocytome.

BACKGROUND: Ixodes ricinus is the main tick vector of the microbes that cause Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis in Europe. Pathogens transmitted by ticks have to overcome innate immunity barriers present in tick tissues, including midgut, salivary glands epithelia and the hemocoel. Molecularly, invertebrate immunity is initiated when pathogen recognition molecules trigger serum or cellular signalling cascades leading to the production of antimicrobials, pathogen opsonization and phagocytosis. We presently aimed at identifying hemocyte transcripts from semi-engorged female I. ricinus tic

Estimating Ixodes ricinus densities on the landscape scale.

BACKGROUND: The study describes the estimation of the spatial distribution of questing nymphal tick densities by investigating Ixodes ricinus in Southwest Germany as an example. The production of high-resolution maps of questing tick densities is an important key to quantify the risk of tick-borne diseases. Previous I. ricinus maps were based on quantitative as well as semi-quantitative categorisations of the tick density observed at study sites with different vegetation types or indices, all compiled on local scales. Here, a quantitative approach on the landscape scale is introduced. METHODS

[Ixodes ricinus. Health risks and approaches in prevention].

Ticks belong to the parasitical mites. There are more than 1000 different species worldwide which do need blood of warm-blooded organisms for their own development. As ticks are well known to be vectors of several pathogens which could cause insidious infectious diseases, they are important in human and veterinarian medicine as well. It is not possible to control ticks in nature. Therefore the first step should be an effective prevention. In case of a bite the tick must be removed as soon as possible. Although Ixodes ricinus is more or less responsible for all health risks caused by ticks in G

Borreliae in Ixodes ricinus ticks feeding on humans.

A total of 298 Ixodes ricinus (L.) ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) feeding on humans in the Czech Republic were tested for borreliae (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato) by darkfield microscopy between 1997 and 2003. A majority (68%) of the supplied I. ricinus ticks were nymphs, 25% were females and 7% were larvae. Overall, 20% of 74 examined females and 9% of 203 examined nymphs (but none of 21 examined larvae) were infected with borreliae. The proportion of ticks with a high infection load (>100 spirochetes) was 4% in females and 2% in nymphal I. ricinus. During the year, the highest numbers and propor

Integrated Jingmenvirus Polymerase Gene in Ixodes ricinus Genome.

Members of the jingmenviruses group have been found in arthropods and mammals on all continents except Australia and Antarctica. Two viruses of this group were isolated from patients with fever after a tick bite. Using a nested RT-PCR assay targeting a jingmenvirus polymerase gene fragment, we screened ticks collected in seven regions of Russia and found that the abundant jingmenvirus-positive were of Ixodes ricinus species, with the prevalence ranging from 19.8% to 34.3%. In all cases, DNase/RNase treatment suggested that the detected molecule was DNA and subsequent next generation sequencing

Detection of Asian-Type Borrelia miyamotoi from Ixodes ricinus Inhabiting Tver Province (Russia): A Sympatric Region for I. ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus.

Borrelia miyamotoi, a hard tick-borne relapsing fever agent, was sampled in Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus ticks from the Tver province in Russia (a sympatric region of both tick species) and examined by TaqMan-PCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene. Borrelia was detected in 4 out of 168 ticks: 2 out of 58 I. ricinus ticks (infection rate 2.9%) and 2 out of 110 I. persulcatus ticks (1.8%). The agent was identified as B. miyamotoi on the basis of the 16S and 23S rDNA intergenic spacer and glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase gene sequencing analyses. Interestingly, the genes sequences detect
