BACKGROUND: With the increasing use of the robotic platform in general surgery, whether 8-mm ports should be closed comes into question. We sought to characterize the incidence of port-site hernias (PSHs) among patients undergoing robotic-assisted general surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of a single institutional database identified patients who underwent robotic-assisted general surgery from July 2010 to December 2016. For each patient, the number, type, location, and size of all ports were collected. Twelve-millimeter port sites were routinely closed, whereas 5-mm and 8-mm por

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of, and risk factors for, conversion from robotic gynecologic procedures to other procedure types.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study included data from women who underwent any robotic gynecologic procedures between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2012 at a tertiary care referral center in the USA. Demographic data, perioperative data, and surgeon experience (monthly case volume) data were retrieved; potential risk factors were compared between robotic procedures that were converted to other procedures and those completed as robotic procedures.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery (RALS) is evolving rapidly in the pediatric surgical field. The unique attributes of the robotic interface makes this technology ideal for children with congenital anomalies who often require reconstructive procedures. Furthermore, the system can generate extremely delicate movements in a confined working space such as the one generally found in the pediatric population. Herein, we critically review the current experience with RALS placing a special emphasis in children undergoing complex reconstructive surgical procedures worldwide.

BACKGROUND: Thymectomy is an essential component in the treatment of myasthenia gravis (MG) and the best treatment for localized thymoma. Minimally invasive thymectomy has advanced to include robotic-assisted techniques. The acceptance of this approach is growing rapidly, while the debate on the adequate technique for thymectomy remains open.
METHODS: We describe the technique of robotic-assisted thymectomy and its modifications. The worldwide registries and the literature are reviewed. The experience from the largest single-center database is analyzed.
RESULTS: The unilateral three-trocar a

OBJECTIVE: We used a model of biliary-enteric anastomosis to test whether da Vinci robotics improves performance on a complex minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedure.
METHODS: An ex vivo model for choledochojejunostomy was created using porcine livers with extrahepatic bile ducts and contiguous intestines. MIS choledochojejunostomies were performed in two arms: group 1 (laparoscopic, n = 30) and group 2 (da Vinci assisted, n = 30). Procedures were performed by three surgeons with graduated MIS expertise: surgeon A (MIS + robotics), surgeon B (experienced MIS), and surgeon C (basic MIS). E

BACKGROUND: Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) in horseshoe kidney (HSK) is surgically challenging because of aberrant anatomy. Robot-assisted pyeloplasty may overcome some limitations of laparoscopy, but data on the Chinese-developed KangDuo (KD) robotic system in HSK are lacking. This study evaluated the surgical procedure and efficacy of KD robot-assisted pyeloplasty for UPJO in HSK.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 14 adult patients with HSK and UPJO who underwent KD robot-assisted dismembered pyeloplasty between March 2021 and December 2025. Seven procedures used KD-SR10

Minimally invasive surgery has transformed surgical practice by reducing operative trauma, postoperative pain, and recovery time compared with open approaches. While conventional laparoscopy remains widely used across specialties, technical limitations such as restricted instrument articulation and limited visualization have driven the adoption of robotic-assisted surgery. This review aimed to synthesise contemporary comparative evidence evaluating robotic versus laparoscopic surgery, with emphasis on perioperative, functional, and oncologic outcomes. A systematic literature search identified

Small renal masses (T1a) are commonly diagnosed incidentally and can be treated with nephron-sparing surgery, preserving renal function and obtaining the same oncological results as radical surgery. Bigger lesions (T1b) may be treated in particular situations with a conservative approach too. We present our surgical technique based on robotic assistance for nephron-sparing surgery. We retrospectively analysed our series of 32 consecutive patients (two with 2 tumours and one with 4 bilateral tumours), for a total of 37 robotic nephron-sparing surgery (RNSS) performed between June 2008 and July

Robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming surgery by improving patient outcomes, efficiency, and precision. The use of robotics in surgery tackles important issues, including surgical precision, minimally invasive procedures, and healthcare accessibility, as global healthcare systems embrace AI-driven technologies more and more. However, access gaps and ethical issues with automation continue to exist on a worldwide scale, calling for a fair discussion of these developments. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the most recent literature on the role of AI and rob

The aim of the study was to study robotic cervical radical trachelectomy, aimed at standardizing and optimizing surgical procedures, thereby facilitating the learning process. All surgical procedures were based on the anatomy of the embryonic compartments, which not only help prevent tumor spillage due to disruption of the embryonic compartments, but also maximize the avoidance of inadequate resection margins. Using robotics to perform radical trachelectomy, combined with the concept of membrane anatomy, not only enables a bloodless surgical process, but also streamlines and simplifies the pro

Postmarket surveillance of robotic surgical systems requires distinguishing harm associated with platform performance from harm arising through procedural, anatomical, anesthetic, or perioperative pathways. We evaluated narrative-supported attribution in US Food and Drug Administration Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) reports involving the Ion and Monarch platforms for robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, a navigation-dependent minimally invasive thoracic intervention. Death- and injury-designated reports received through 31 May 2026 were reviewed using a prespecified framewo

Background: Inguinal lymph node dissection is performed in penile cancers and has a high complication rate with mostly wound-related complications. This case study demonstrates the use of robotic technique, tissue perfusion assessment, and negative pressure wound dressing to minimize wound-related complications. Case Presentation: A 67-year-old Maltese man was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in situ on biopsy of a self-detected penile lump. The patient underwent a partial penectomy and histopathology report confirmed moderately differentiated SCC with clear surgical margins. A pos

Preoperative planning for robot-assisted segmentectomy requires accurate understanding of segmental anatomy and the sequence of vascular and bronchial division. Although three-dimensional computed tomography provides detailed anatomical information, it does not allow stepwise prediction of intraoperative anatomical changes. We applied a lobectomy-based da Vinci surgical simulator for preoperative planning of robot-assisted apical-anterior segmentectomy. A 62-year-old woman with a 10-mm pulmonary nodule suspected to be stage IA1 non-small cell lung cancer underwent the procedure. The method foc

Robot-assisted pancreatic surgery (RPS) is increasingly adopted across institutions. While structured training and longitudinal skill acquisition are essential for optimal outcomes, the learning progression of surgical assistants in RPS remains inadequately characterized. This study presents our institution's standard operating procedures (SOP) for robot-assisted distal pancreatectomy (RDP) developed through a single-team cohort experience and defines the assistant learning curve based on operative time, thereby establishing evidence-based benchmarks for RPS training programs. The distal end of a robotic surgical instrument is where access, dexterity, tissue interaction and procedural capability converge. In flexible, endoluminal, transoral, percutaneous, vascular and neuroendoscopic surgery, the clinical value of an instrument depends not only on kinematic complexity but also on miniaturisation, usable lumen, transmission reliability, stiffness, sensing and validation maturity. This article presents a structured narrative review of distal mechanisms for robotic surgical instruments, based on a technical-clinical synthesis of studies identified through IEEE Xplore,
