[Advances in root canal filling materials used in primary teeth].

Root canal treatment of primary teeth is the most common treatment method for pulpitis and periapical periodontitis in pediatric dentistry. Effective root canal treatment could prevent the teeth from occurring of periapical infection or promote the healing of periapical lesions of teeth with periodontitis for preserving the decayed tooth, preventing early loss of primary teeth and inducing the formation of normal permanent dentition. The material selection for root canal filling is one of the most important factors influencing the treatment outcome of root canal treatment. So far, there has be

Root canal filling materials spread pattern mimicking root fractures in dental CBCT images.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the cause of artificial tooth-root fracture lines in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images caused by root canal filling materials and to enhance the diagnostic performance of CBCT. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed the CBCT images of 18 extracted human teeth (9 upper central incisors and 9 lower premolars) that were filled with a size 50 gutta-percha cone and inserted into tooth sockets in a human skull. RESULTS: The CBCT images of the incisors displayed artificial lines in the oblique directions, notably the mesiobuccal, distolingual, distobuccal and mesiolingual directi

Biological aspects of root canal filling materials--histocompatibility,cytotoxicity, and mutagenicity.

In order to minimize the incidence of local and/or systemic side effects, the biocompatibility of all endodontic materials should be investigated by various in vitro and in vivo tests prior to clinical application. The battery of in vitro tests includes determinations of mutagenicity, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial effects. Several reports have shown that paraformaldehyde-containing ZnO-eugenol cements in particular, such as Endomethasone and N2, are antibacterial. On the other hand, it has been found that endodontic materials with strong antimicrobial activity are frequently mutagenic, i.e.,

Ultrastructural evaluation of the apical seal in roots filled with a polycaprolactone-based root canal filling material.

This in vitro study compared the ultrastructural quality of the apical seal achieved with Resilon/Epiphany and gutta-percha/AH Plus. Single-rooted extracted human teeth were prepared using a crown-down technique, debrided with NaOCl and EDTA, and obturated with either Resilon/Epiphany or gutta-percha/AH Plus. They were examined for gaps along canal walls using SEM, and for apical leakage using a transmission electron microscopy (TEM). SEM revealed both gap-free regions, and gap-containing regions in canals filled with both materials. TEM revealed the presence of silver deposits along the seale

Comparative neurotoxic effects of root canal filling materials on rat sciatic nerve.

The neurotoxic effects of the root canal filling materials--Endomethasone, N2 Universal, Traitement SPAD, Sealapex, and Calciobiotic Root Canal Sealer (CRCS)--were investigated on isolated rat sciatic nerves after local application. All of the canal filling materials reversibly inhibited the compound action potential (cAP) amplitudes. N2 Universal produced a 50% inhibition in 4.2 +/- 0.2 min. Traitement SPAD, Endomethasone, and CRCS produced the same inhibition in 6.4 +/- 0.3, 6.5 +/- 0.2, and 6.6 +/- 1.1 min, and Sealapex in 9.2 +/- 2.0 min. The inhibitory effect of Sealapex decreased fastest

Cytotoxicity of root canal filling materials to three different human cell lines.

The aim of this study was to investigate the biological compatibility of five root canal sealers (Sealapex, Endion, Super-EBA, Ketac-Endo, and AH Plus) and regular and calcium hydroxide-based gutta-percha in three different human cell lines. Cultures without root canal sealers were used as controls. Cell growth, cell morphology, cell viability, protein content of the cells, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) release were used as parameters to determine the cytotoxicity of the materials. The protein content of the three cell lines--nasal fibroblasts, gingival fibroblasts, and epithelial tumor cells--w

Comparative finite element analysis of internal root resorption treatment using various root canal filling materials.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the stress distribution in maxillary incisors with internal resorption (IR) filled with various root canal filling materials using finite element analysis (FEA). METHODS: A three-dimensional model of the maxillary central incisor was generated by scanning. Twenty-seven models were created using different materials to fill the IR area in the apical, middle, and coronal third of the teeth. The root canals of the IR defect models were filled with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Biodentine, bioceramic sealer (BCS), gutta percha (GP), or their combinations. FEA wa

Effect of root canal filling materials containing calcium hydroxide on the alkalinity of root dentin.

The effect of root canal filling pastes containing calcium oxide resp. calcium hydroxide on the alkalinity of extracted human teeth was investigated using a colour indicator (cresol red). An aqueous suspension of calcium hydroxide (Pulpdent), which is normally used for temporary root canal filling, most consistently produced alkalinity. Removal of the smear layer following instrumentation of the root canal led to increased proportion of alkaline-positive spots in dentinal locations distant from the canal. A clearly smaller effect was found with a calcium salicylate cement (Sealapex) and an oil

Histological Evaluation of Sodium Iodide-Based Root Canal Filling Materials in Canine Teeth.

A novel water-soluble root canal filling material based on sodium iodide (NaI) has been developed to overcome the limitations of existing iodine-based formulations. However, the biological stability of this approach in animal studies remains unverified. This study evaluated the biocompatibility of NaI compared to commercial root canal filling materials (Calcipex II and Vitapex®) in pulpectomized canine teeth to assess its clinical applicability. Following a four-week observation period, none of the experimental groups exhibited tooth mobility or fistula formation. Radiographic and micro-CT ana

Antimicrobial and ultrastructural properties of root canal filling materials exposed to bacterial challenge.

INTRODUCTION: Chemo-mechanical preparation of the root canal leaves behind viable bacteria which can lead to treatment failure. Materials used inside the root canal should possess antimicrobial properties and also resist disintegration in the presence of biofilm. METHODS: Gutta-percha, three root canal sealers (Pulp Canal Sealer, AH Plus and BioRoot RCS) and materials used to make posts (a metal and a resin) were evaluated. Their antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecalis in direct contact was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and live-dead staining using confocal microscopy

Intracanal dressing and root canal filling materials in tooth replantation: a literature review.

The prognosis of tooth replantation is usually related to the need of endodontic treatment, which has a direct relationship with the occurrence of root resorptions. Several studies have been undertaken in an attempt to prevent, delay, or treat these complications, which are the main causes of loss of replanted teeth. This literature review examines research evidence on intracanal dressings and root canal filling materials used in cases of tooth replantation. A comprehensive search was performed in the Medline/Pubmed, Bireme and Scielo full-text electronic journal databases to retrieve English-
