BACKGROUND: There are limited data available to understand the value of bioactive glass for spinal fusion procedures. Bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2) is an established graft that has been on the market for roughly 24 years, while bioactive glass represents a newer class of graft technology. The objective of this study is to compare economic, health care utilization, and postoperative outcomes associated with the use of a bioactive glass vs BMP-2.
METHODS: A retrospective, comparative study was conducted to compare a bioactive glass, FIBERGRAFT (DePuy Synthes, Raynham, MA), to BMP-2. The Pr

BACKGROUND: Root canal treatment is carried out on teeth in which irreversible pulpitis has led to necrosis of the dental pulp. As a treatment option it is an alternative to dental extraction. Mechanical preparation and irrigation with antiseptic or antibacterial solutions destroys bacteria and cleans the infected root canal. Irrigants should be effective in deactivating bacteria in the entire root canal space without causing any adverse tissue reactions. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine are commonly used but there is uncertainty as to which solution, concentration or combination

The internal topography of the root canal is complex, especially for the mesial root of the permanent first molar. In response to such challenges, enhanced irrigation protocols have been developed, using laser pulses to agitate fluids and enhance the removal of microbial deposits. The aim of this laboratory study was to assess the effectiveness of laser agitation of sodium hypochlorite in removing multispecies biofilms grown in the mesial root of the permanent first molars. The five agitation groups (N = 12 roots for each) were: 940 nm diode laser (superpulsed mode, 50 μs/pulses at 20 Hz using

BACKGROUND: Bacteria play an essential role in the initiation and perpetuation of pulpal and periapical pathoses. Enterococcus faecalis is associated with both primary and persistent endodontic infections. However, the frequency of E. faecalis in persistent periradicular lesions has been shown to be very higher than primary infections.
AIM: The purpose of this paper was to review the effect of various irrigation solutions such as sodium hypochlorite, chlorhexidine, MTAD and Tetraclean against E. faecalis.
METHODS: Papers used in this review were found by searching the key words (Root canal i

BACKGROUND: Root canal treatment (RCT) requires thorough removal of the smear layer to ensure proper sealing, reduce microbial contamination, and enhance treatment success. Chelating agents such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) are widely used, but they show limitations, especially in the apical third. Maleic acid (MA), a mild organic acid with low pH, has been proposed as a promising alternative due to its superior demineralising and adhesive-enhancing properties.
AIM: To evaluate the role of MA in root canal therapy, with emphasis on smear layer removal, antimicrobial efficacy, den

In this study, the combined effects of photodynamic therapy and irrigants in eradicating common endodontic pathogens are evaluated. Roots of 80 extracted single rooted teeth are divided into 2 groups (1) mechanical flushing; (2) antibacterial irrigation. After cleaning and shaping, they are inoculated with either (A) Streptococcus mutans or (B) Enterococcus faecalis and incubated. They are again subdivided and either only irrigated or irrigated and lased. Dentin shavings are taken from root canal walls and cultured. Statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA and Post-hoc tests are done. The comb
