Quadrant root planing versus same-day full-mouth root planing.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether same-day full-mouth scaling and root planing (FM-SRP) and quadrant scaling and root planing (Q-SRP) resulted in variations in the systemic humoral immune response dynamics (antibody titres and avidity) during active treatment and 3 and 6 months post-therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients with chronic periodontitis were recruited into this study. Subjects were randomised into two groups and received either scaling and root planing quadrant by quadrant at 2-weekly intervals (Q-SRP group) or same-day full-mouth scaling and root p

Quadrant root planing versus same-day full-mouth root planing. II. Microbiological findings.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that over a period of 6 months, same-day full-mouth scaling and root planing (FM-SRP) resulted in greater reductions in the detection frequency of five putative periodontal pathogens compared with quadrant scaling and root planing (Q-SRP) in chronic periodontitis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients were recruited into this study. Subjects were randomised into two groups. The FM-SRP group received full-mouth scaling and root planing completed within the same day, while the Q-SRP group received quadrant root planing at 2-w

Tetracycline fibers plus scaling and root planing versus scaling and root planing alone: similar results after 5 years.

This paper presents 5-year data pertaining to a subgroup of patients from a previous investigation who were treated with scaling and root planing plus tetracycline fibers. The parent study demonstrated that 6 months after therapy, scaling and root planing plus tetracycline fiber therapy was significantly better at reducing probing depth and gaining clinical attachment than scaling and root planing alone. However, the long-term data presented here show a regression from the original gains in clinical attachment levels in the fiber group. Ultimately, the use of fibers provided no significant adv

Endodontic effects of root planing in humans.

Although the deliberate removal of cementum by root planing remains part of periodontal therapy, its scientific basis is under challenge. A potentially harmful effect of root planing is the exposure of dentinal tubules to the oral environment; this study investigated the short-term endodontic effects of root planing in humans. Ten teeth with significant loss of periodontal attachment had one proximal surface root planed; the other proximal surface was not root planed. After 10-14 days, the teeth were extracted and processed for light microscopic and SEM examination. Hypersensitivity to thermal

Pain after periodontal scaling and root planing.

BACKGROUND: Although periodontal scaling and root planing, or SRP, is one of the most common procedures used in dental practice, there is little information available about the degree of postprocedural pain associated with it. The authors undertook this study to document the intensity and duration of pain after SRP with a view toward helping practitioners and their patients manage postprocedural discomfort. METHODS: Using the Heft-Parker self-assessment pain scale, 52 adults with moderate periodontitis evaluated their pain before and after SRP conducted with local anesthetic. RESULTS: After

Papain associated with root planing in treatment of periodontitis.

Although subgingival scaling and root planing (SRP) are the "gold standard" treatment for periodontitis, these processes may remove excessive cement, exposing dentin and causing hypersensitivity, or producing defects such as ridges and grooves, leaving residual calculus and preventing access to the whole of the root surface. A papain gel that removes carious dentin (Papacárie®) has been introduced and this gel may also help to remove supra and subgingival calculus, acting on its organic portion and biofilm, decreasing the consumption of cement and generating lower levels of aerosol compared to

Efficacy of full-mouth disinfection vs quadrant root planing.

This article addresses the capability of full-mouth disinfection, full-mouth root planing, and partial-mouth disinfection to improve periodontal health. A basic premise of full-mouth therapy (full-mouth disinfection or full-mouth root planing) is to eradicate or diminish bacterial reservoirs in the mouth that could impede optimal healing or initiate periodontal disease or disease progression. Several investigations conducted at one university indicated that full-mouth disinfection and full-mouth root planing achieved greater therapeutic improvements compared with partial-mouth disinfection reg

Intrasulcular laser Doppler readings before and after root planing.

A reproducible and sensitive laser Doppler periodontal probe has recently been developed for intrasulcular measurement of gingival blood flow. The specific aims of this investigation were to determine the relation between intrasulcular laser Doppler readings (LDR) and traditional diagnostic criteria as well as to evaluate the response to root planning in terms of LDR and traditional criteria. LDR and clinical measurements (bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL) were obtained from 2 healthy and 2 diseased sites in 30 systemically healthy adult volunteer

Bacteremia following subgingival irrigation and scaling and root planing.

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of bacteremia after a single professional subgingival irrigation with a 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate mouthrinse (CHX) as well as after a subsequent scaling and root planing (S/RP) during the same visit. Thirty subjects each with at least 1 site that probed 4 mm or more and bled on probing were randomly assigned to the following groups: 1) irrigation with 0.12% CHX; 2) irrigation with sterile water; and 3) non-irrigated controls. To begin the study blood was drawn just before and 2 minutes after irrigation. Thirty minutes later, blood wa

Bacteremia following scaling and root planing: A clinico-microbiological study.

BACKGROUND: Bacteremia frequently occurs after treatment procedures such as extractions, scaling, root planing, periodontal surgery. There is currently significant interest in the possibility that bacteremia with oral bacteria may play role in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. There are well-conducted studies that have determined the frequency of passage of periodontal microorganisms to the bloodstream after periodontal treatment. There is scarce information related to the incidence of periodontopathic microorganisms during bacteremia induced by this procedure. AIM: The aim of this study was t

The need for pain control during scaling and root planing.

Scaling and root planing is a common procedure in clinical practice. Despite the frequency of the procedure, the control of pain associated with scaling and root planing has not been well studied. Recently, studies have pointed out a need for pain control during the procedure in a significant number of subjects-perhaps as many as 30% of patients. This need for pain control is similar to the need for instrumentation during maintenance therapy. The need also is similar whether hand instrumentation or ultrasonic equipment is used. The current most used form of pain control is local anesthesia inj

Microbes, inflammation, scaling and root planing, and the periodontal condition.

Biofilms are a complex community of microorganisms characterized by the excretion of an adhesive and protective extracellular matrix, microbe-to-microbe attachment, structural heterogeneity, genetic diversity, and complex community interactions. Bacteria growing in dental biofilms display an increased tolerance to antibiotics and antimicrobial agents, including those used in dentifrices and mouthrinses. The microbial challenge associated with the inflammatory periodontal diseases induces an immediate inflammatory and immune response in the host. The nature and magnitude of the response has an

Local chemotherapeutics as an adjunct to scaling and root planing.

Gingival diseases are the most widely held diseases in America. In some patients, periodontal disease appears in a generalized form, but more often it appears in localized areas. Furthermore, after treatment with scaling and root planing (SRP) in generalized cases, the disease is often reduced to a few local areas in the patient's mouth. Since periodontitis is a bacterial infection with known pathogenic microorganisms, the local delivery of antimicrobials has been considered to be a possible solution for treating and controlling localized forms of periodontal disease. An in vitro study of oscillating instruments for root planing.

The objective of this in vitro study was to test PER-IO-TOR instruments on the Profin Directional System angle piece (Dentatus-Sweden), using extracted human teeth. In the 1st part of the study, 6 root surfaces were treated with the instruments TOR 1, TOR 2, TOR 3 and TOR 4. For comparison purposes, half the samples treated with each instrument were then subjected to further treatment with a Gracey curette. All samples were then examined by SEM. In the 2nd part of the study, 4 root surfaces were given standardized treatment with each PER-IO-TOR instrument and the amount of substance removed wa
