BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common forms of dementia among the elderly in the world. With the increase of human life expectancy, its incidence is also increasing year by year. Tacrine (TAC) is the first acetylcholine inhibitor approved for the treatment of AD. Although TAC has obvious anti-AD activity, it was eventually delisted due to acute liver injury caused by its strong hepatotoxicity. Rosmarinic acid (RA) has shown good activity in both neuroprotection and hepatoprotection.
PURPOSE AND STUDY DESIGN: In this study, the combination of RA and TAC was explored, a

Shiso (Perilla frutescens var crispa f. purprea) is a traditional medicinal herb that exerts anti-inflammatory effects and alleviates lower urinary tract symptoms. In this study, we examined the effects of rosmarinic acid, a major polyphenol in shiso, on urinary function and the bladder in a rat hydrochloric acid-induced cystitis model. Sprague-Dawley rats were administered intravesically with hydrochloric acid or saline solution (control) to induce cystitis. Afterwards, the rats were administered orally with distilled water or rosmarinic acid for three days and then the intravesical pressure

Polyphenols have neuroprotective effects after brain ischemia. It has been demonstrated that rosmarinic acid (RA), a natural phenolic compound, possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. To evaluate the effectiveness of RA against memory deficits induced by permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) mice were treated with RA (0.1, 1, and 20mg/kg/day, i.p. before ischemia and during 5 days). Animals were evaluated for locomotor activity and working memory 72 h after pMCAO, and spatial and recognition memories 96 h after pMCAO. In addition, in another set of experiments brai

Rosmarinic acid (RA), a compound found in several plant species, has beneficial properties, including anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. We investigated the toxicity, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic effects of RA using precision-cut liver slices (PCLS) and precision-cut intestinal slices (PCIS) prepared from human, mouse, and rat tissue. PCLS and PCIS were cultured up to 48 h in the absence or presence of RA. Gene expression of the inflammatory markers: IL-6, IL-8/CXCL1/KC, and IL-1β, as well as the fibrosis markers: pro-collagen 1a1, heat shock protein 47, α-smooth muscle actin,

Background/Objectives: It is believed that some polyphenols, including phenolic acids, may counteract estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss, decreasing oxidative stress. Moreover, some phenolic acids-among others, rosmarinic acid and sinapic acid-have been reported to increase the serum estradiol concentration in rats. The study aimed to investigate the impact of rosmarinic acid and sinapic acid on the skeletal system of rats with estrogen deficiency induced by bilateral ovariectomy. Methods: The study was carried out on mature female rats, divided into sham-operated control rats, ovariectomiz

Bothrops leucurus is responsible for most cases of snakebite in Northeast Brazil; however, this species is not included in the pool of venoms used in antivenom production in Brazil. The serotherapy has logistical and effectiveness limitations, which stimulates the search for therapeutic alternatives. Chlorogenic acid and rosmarinic acid present several biological activities, but their antiophidic potential has been poorly explored. Thus, the aim of this approach was to evaluate the potential inhibitory effects of these compounds on B. leucurus venom. Initially, the enzymatic inhibition of toxi

Rosmarinic acid (α-o-caffeoyl-3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid; RA) is a naturally occurring hydroxylated compound commonly found in species of the subfamily Nepetoideae of the Lamiaceae and Boraginaceae, such as Rosmarinus officinalis, Salvia officinalis, and Perilla frutescens. RA is biosynthesized from the amino acids L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosine by eight enzymes that include phenylalanine ammonia lyase and cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase. RA can also be chemically produced by the esterification of caffeic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid. RA and its numerous derivatives containing one o

Though rosmarinic acid possesses nutritional, pharmaceutical, and toxic properties and shows therapeutic potential on liver diseases, its therapeutic effects against cholestatic liver diseases have not been proven. Using an extrahepatic cholestasis rat model by bile-duct ligation (BDL), daily oral administration of rosmarinic acid showed improvement effects on liver histology, serum biochemicals, ductular reaction, oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis. Rosmarinic acid alleviated BDL-induced transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β1) production and hepatic collagen deposition, and the a

Cardiovascular disease (CVDs) and atherosclerosis remain a major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Endothelial dysfunction is a central driver of atherosclerosis, which is significantly accelerated in diabetes mellitus through hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) accumulation, and NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Phenolic acids, a class of plant-derived polyphenols, have gained attention as vasoprotective agents due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Among them, rosmarinic acid and salvianolic acid have gained attention,

This review aimed to identify preclinical and clinical studies examining the effects of rosmarinic acid (RA), carnosic acid (CaA), rosmanol (RO), carnosol (CA), and ursolic acid (UA) against allergic and immunologic disorders. Various online databases, including PubMed, Science Direct, EMBASE, Web of Sciences, Cochrane trials, and Scopus, were searched from inception until October 2022. Due to the suppression of the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway, the main factor in allergic asthma, RA may be a promising candidate for the treatment of asthma. The other ingredients comprising CA and UA reduc

Primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis (PLCA) is caused by the deposition of keratin amyloids in the skin and leads to severe symptoms. It is difficult to cure PLCA completely; therefore, prevention is essential. In this study, amyloid formation of a keratin-derived amyloidogenic peptide, KT5-6, was successfully inhibited by rosmarinic acid (RA), a polyphenol present in plants such as rosemary. It was also shown that RA can bind to the KT5-6 monomer and prevent further aggregation. This study also provided basic information on KT5-6 amyloids such as their secondary structure and cytotoxicity,
