The family Matonaviridae comprises enveloped viruses with positive-sense RNA genomes of 9.6-10 kb. The genus Rubivirus includes rubella virus (species Rubivirus rubellae) infecting humans, ruhugu virus (species Rubivirus ruteetense) infecting bats and rustrela virus (species Rubivirus strelense) infecting rodents and zoo animals. Rubella virus is spread via droplets. Postnatal infection leads to benign disease with rash and fever. Infection of seronegative women with rubella virus during the first trimester of pregnancy will often result in severe foetal malformations, known as congenital rube

Rubella virus (RuV) is an enveloped plus-sense RNA virus and a member of the Rubivirus genus. RuV infection in pregnant women can lead to miscarriage or an array of severe birth defects known as congenital rubella syndrome. Novel rubiviruses were recently discovered in various mammals, highlighting the spillover potential of other rubiviruses to humans. Many features of the rubivirus infection cycle remain unexplored. To promote the study of rubivirus biology, here, we generated replication-competent recombinant VSV-RuV (rVSV-RuV) encoding the RuV transmembrane glycoproteins E2 and E1. Sequenc

Rustrela virus (RusV; species Rubivirus strelense) is a recently discovered relative of rubella virus (RuV) that has been detected in cases of encephalitis in diverse mammals. Here, we diagnosed two additional cases of fatal RusV-associated meningoencephalitis in a South American coati (Nasua nasua) and a Eurasian or European otter (Lutra lutra) that were detected in a zoological garden with history of prior RusV infections. Both animals showed abnormal movement or unusual behavior and their brains tested positive for RusV using specific reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and RNA

Rubella virus (RV), an infectious agent of rubella, is the sole member of the genus Rubivirus in the family of Togaviridae. RV has a positive-stranded sense RNA as a genome. A natural host of RV is limited to human, and rubella is considered to be a childhood disease in general. When woman is infected with RV during early pregnancy, her fetus may develop severe birth defects known as congenital rubella syndrome. In this review, the RV life cycle from the virus entry to budding is illustrated in comparison with those of member viruses of the genus alphavirus in the same family. The multiple fun

Rubella virus (RuV), which belongs to the family Togaviridae and genus Rubivirus, causes systemic infection in children and young adults and congenital rubella syndrome in developing fetuses if the infection occurs during pregnancy. The mechanisms of fetal infection by RuV are not completely understood. Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) is reported to be a cellular receptor for RuV; however, it is mainly expressed in the central nervous system. Therefore, it is thought that other receptors are also responsible for virus entry into susceptible cells. In this study, we found that first-t

The rubivirus Rubella virus contains the two envelope glycoproteins E2 and E1 as a heterodimeric spike complex embedded in its lipid envelope. The functions of both proteins, especially of E2, in the process of viral entry are still not entirely understood. In order to dissect E2 and E1 entry functions from post-entry steps, pseudotypes of lentiviral vectors based on Simian immunodeficiency virus were used. C-terminally modified E2 and E1 variants successfully pseudotyped lentiviral vector particles. This is the first report to show that not only E1, but also E2, is able to mediate infectious

Many active principles produced by animals, plants and microorganisms have been employed in the development of new drugs for the treatment of human diseases. Among animals known to produce pharmacologically active molecules that interfere in human cell physiology. Rubella virus (genus Rubivirus, family Togaviridae) is a single stranded RNA virus of positive genome polarity. Rubella virus infection of susceptible women during the first trimester of pregnancy often results in long-term virus persistence in the fetus causing multiple organ abnormalities. Potent antiviral activity against rubella

Rustrela virus (RusV) is a newly discovered member of the genus Rubivirus. RusV causes a fatal, non-suppurative meningoencephalomyelitis in a variety of mammals. Various aspects of RusV biology remain poorly understood, e.g. the excretion of infectious virus and its transmission. To address these questions, we performed in vivo experiments including putative reservoir (wood mice) as well as potential dead-end hosts (Lewis rats). To investigate the natural route of RusV infection and transmission, subgroups of wood mice and Lewis rats were either inoculated intranasally or orally. Successful in

The structural proteins (SP) of the Togaviridae can be deleted in defective interfering RNAs. The dispensability of viral SP has allowed construction of noninfectious viral expression vectors and replicons from viruses of the Alphavirus and Rubivirus genera. Nevertheless, in this study, we found that the SP of rubella virus (RUB) could enhance expression of reporter genes from RUB replicons in trans. SP enhancement required capsid protein (CP) expression and was not due to RNA-RNA recombination. Accumulation of minus- and plus-strand RNAs from replicons was observed in the presence of SP, sugg

Rubella viruses are single-stranded ribonucleic acid viruses, which are surrounded by a lipid-containing membrane. From the taxonomic point of view, these serologically uniform viruses belong to the family of Togaviridae, and to the genus Rubivirus. After birth, infection with rubella virus occurs through inhalation of contaminated droplets. In children infected after birth, rubella viruses usually cause uncomplicated diseases that are associated with an unspecific rash (postnatal rubella). Rubella virus infections in adults might be more severe and can be accompanied by complications such as

Rubella virus (RUBV), a rubivirus, is an airborne human pathogen that generally causes mild measles-like symptoms in children or adults. However, RUBV infection of pregnant women can result in miscarriage or congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), a collection of long-term birth defects including incomplete organ development and mental retardation. Worldwide vaccination campaigns have significantly reduced the number of RUBV infections, but RUBV continues to be a problem in countries with low vaccination coverage. Further, the recent discovery of pathogenic rubiviruses in other mammals emphasizes t

The Rubella virus (RUBV) is a highly contagious pathogen classified within the rubivirus genus, primarily infecting humans and transmitted via airborne routes. RUBV infection generally manifests as a mild illness reminiscent of measles. However, when affecting pregnant women, it can lead to a severe condition known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Rubella infection could be also associated with joint pain, arthritis, and neurological disorders. Determination of Rubella immunity and diagnosis conventionally involve the Hemagglutination Inhibition (HI) test or the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorben

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the ToRCH epidemic law in Wuhan region.
METHODS: The ToRCH infection in the normal populations of Wuhan region was inspected through a whole year (from Mar. 1997 to Feb. 1998) by detecting the specific IgM antibodies to ToRCH in sera.
RESULTS: The results showed that in the whole year, the average positive rates of IgM aitibodies to Toxo, RuV, CMV and HSV were 5.8%, 7.5%, 4.2% and 4.9% respectively. Three characteristics of the ToRCH epidemic in the region were concluded: (1) The epidemic of RuV obviously changed with seasons. Its infection rates were the highest (8

Rubella, also known as German measles or three-day measles, is an infectious disease caused by virus of the genus Rubivirus, which may be prevented by vaccination. The infection is potentially dangerous for non immune subjects, although 20-50% of infected subjects are asymptomatic. Healthcare workers (HCWs) have an increased potential exposure to rubella in comparison to the general population, putting them and their patients at risk of infection and its complications. In 2019, 20 cases of rubella have been reported in Italy. According to the Italian National Immunization and Prevention Plan,

INTRODUCTION: Rubella is currently an infection controlled by specific prophylaxis. Not only the right vaccine prophylaxis strategy and tactics, but also the use of effective and safe vaccine preparations is crucial for the elimination of this disease. The aim of the investigation was to study the morphological and pathogenetic patterns of changes developing in the central nervous system (CNS) and internal organs of monkeys (Haplorhini) during intracerebral inoculation with 2 strains of rubella virus (Matonaviridae: Rubivirus: Rubella virus) (RV): highly attenuated Orlov-B, and low attenuated O

INTRODUCTION: Rubella can have particularly serious effects on the product of conception if contracted during pregnancy. Thus, the main aim of rubella vaccination programmes is to prevent infection during pregnancy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A seroepidemiological study was conducted from July 2006 to December 2007 on 1000 women of childbearing age, 15 to 45 years old, using specific rubivirus antibody assays, IgG and IgM. A questionnaire administered at the same time allowed us to survey how much women knew about this disease. In addition, MMR vaccine coverage rates were analysed for cohorts bor

BACKGROUND: It is generally thought that viruses require the cytoskeleton during their replication cycle. However, recent experiments in our laboratory with rubella virus, a member of the family Togaviridae (genus rubivirus), revealed that replication proceeded in the presence of drugs that inhibit microtubules. This study was done to expand on this observation.
FINDINGS: The replication of three diverse viruses, Sindbis virus (SINV; family Togaviridae family), vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV; family Rhabdoviridae), and Herpes simplex virus (family Herpesviridae), was quantified by the titer

Rubella, also known as German measles, is usually a very mild infection that can have devastating effects in certain instances. It is a pleomorphic RNA virus in the Togaviridae family of the genus Rubivirus. It typically causes a scarletiniform rash, cervical lymphadenopathy, and mild constitutional symptoms, but in older children and adults, especially women, it may be more severe, with joint involvement and purpuric rash. Infection during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy results in congenital infection and/or miscarriage in 80-90% of cases. The congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) involves multi
