BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents who play rugby are at increased risk of concussion and its effects. Competitive rugby union and rugby league feature as major sports in the school sport curriculum in the UK. There is a need for a thorough understanding of the epidemiology of concussion in youth rugby, the mechanisms involved in injuries and predisposing risk factors.
DATA SOURCES: The publication databases Pubmed, Embase and SportDISCUS were searched in April 2014 for primary research studies of child and adolescent rugby union and rugby league (under 20 years) in English language with da

PURPOSE: To highlight the insidious effect of long term front row play on the cervical spine.
CASE SUMMARY: Two rugby union front row players presented with neck pain in the middle of the 1991-1992 season. Both had been playing rugby from an early age in the front row. Both had represented their country at school level. They also had both played senior rugby in the Leinster province of Ireland from the age of 19 years. One of the players presented with neck pain with associated radicular radiation. The other player presented with an insidious chronic neck pain. There was no history of acute t

This scoping review explored the physical qualities, and match demands of athletes participating at elite and sub-elite levels in four team-based collision sports played in Australia: Australian football, rugby union, rugby sevens, and rugby league. Fifty-nine studies were analysed to examine anthropometric traits, physical qualities, and match demands of female athletes across these sports. Comparisons were made between elite and sub-elite playing levels. A risk of bias and methodological assessment was also conducted. Findings suggest that elite athletes (as defined by the FTEM framework) in

Concussion is a frequently occurring injury in rugby which is not usually reported to coaches or medical staff. Recognition and treatment of concussion should be a priority; however, education surrounding concussion knowledge and attitudes of the players have been lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge and attitudes toward concussion in Western Province Rugby Union (WPRU) Super League senior club rugby players. This study focused on gathering quantitative information from WPRU club rugby players, using the Rosenbaum Concussion Knowledge and Attitudes Survey-Student Ver

BACKGROUND: There are sparse scientific data concerning the aetiology and incidence of injuries in the Super 12 rugby competition. Aim. The aim of the study was to document the incidence, nature and risk factors associated with injuries during a Super 12 rugby competition.
METHODS: Injuries, defined as injuries preventing playing or training, or requiring medical treatment, were recorded in a cohort of 75 South African Super 12 players over one season. Injury severity was graded according to sessions missed: minor (1 - 3 missed), intermediate (4 - 9) and severe (> 9).
RESULTS: During the tou

INTRODUCTION: Bovine colostrum is a nutrient-dense first milk, rich in bioactive compounds such as immunoglobulins and growth factors, which may enhance athletic performance and immune function. Rugby union involves high-intensity training for both aerobic and muscular power, which could leave athletes vulnerable to opportunistic infections.
PURPOSE: This double-blind, randomized study examined the effects of 8 weeks of bovine colostrum supplementation (38 g/day) versus soy protein in 29 club-level rugby players (three women) during the competitive season.
METHODS: Muscular strength (1RM ben

The injuries sustained by the boys at one English public school have been recorded and analysed by age, experience, position, phase, duration of the game and of the season. Few injuries have been serious. Detailed reference is made to concussion, injuries from collapsed scrums and injuries of the cervical spine. The paper emphasises that the tackle leads to most injuries. This paper presents the Rugby football injuries sustained by the boarders of Rugby School in the four seasons 1980-1983. The injury rate was 194 per 10,000 player hours, compared with the rate of 198 per 10,000 player hours f

BACKGROUND: Prompted by a cluster of observations concerning ascending aortic pathology in elite rugby players, we assessed over 150 asymptomatic predominantly retired players with echocardiography, aiming to document the prevalence and severity of ascending aortic dilatation and/or anterior aortic effacement, both 'risk factors' for potentially catastrophic aortic complications.
METHODS: Rugby players (at least 5 years of high level competitive rugby) were classified as elite (national, state or first grade representatives) or non-elite. A total of 152 asymptomatic players with a mean age of

BACKGROUND: The tackle is the most common in-play event in rugby union and rugby league (the rugby codes). It is also associated with the greatest propensity for injury and thus accounts for the most injuries in the sport. It is therefore of critical importance to accurately quantify how tackle technique alters injury risk using gold-standard methodology of three-dimensional motion (3D) capture.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the 3D motion capture methodology of rugby-style tackle techniques to provide recommendations to inform practice for future rugby code research and advance the knowledge of this

The physical demands and combative nature of rugby lead to notable levels of muscle damage. In professional rugby, athletes only have a limited timeframe to recover following training sessions and competition. Through the implementation of recovery strategies, sport scientists, practitioners and coaches have sought to reduce the effect of fatigue and allow athletes to recover faster. Although some studies demonstrate that recovery strategies are extensively used by rugby athletes, the research remains equivocal concerning the efficacy of recovery strategies in rugby. Moreover, given the role o

During one 18-week season, in which players from 26 high schools played 3,350 rugby matches, 495 injuries prevented players from participating in rugby for at least 1 week; 71% occurred during matches and 29% during practices. Injury was more common during the first 4 weeks of the season and again in the same time period after the mid-season vacation. At all ages, A-team players suffered the greatest number of injuries. The safest playing positions were tight-forward and scrum-half; the most dangerous loose-forward and in the back-line excluding the scrum-half. Overall, eightmen were the most

To address the gender imbalance in rugby union research by exploring barriers and facilitators to injury surveillance participation among female community players, thereby providing insight into how psychological needs shape engagement. This study examines how knowledge of injury surveillance and practical barriers influence engagement with injury surveillance systems in women's community rugby. Cross-sectional. An online survey was completed by 242 women's community rugby union players (age: 29 ± 9 years; experience: 7.1 ± 5.2 years) from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The questionnair

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic data in professional sport is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in identifying frequently occurring injuries and developing strategies to reduce their occurrence. Currently, there is a paucity of literature on the epidemiology of knee injuries in professional male rugby league players.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records from a single male professional rugby league team (Newcastle Knights), competing in Australia, and evaluated knee injuries and time to return to play.
RESULTS: In total, 89 knee injuries occurred, with an injury incidence of 61
